2017 WIAA Basketball Tournament

FVBrewerFan

We start, as always, with the girls. And every year, reminded how ridiculous it is Wisc still does not seed teams- even in the Semi-final round.

So tonight in Div 1, we have the two powerhouses. Appleton North vs Milwaukee King- both undefeated. Should be a good one!

Shemera Williams put on quite a show for MAS. Four of her baskets were from NBA range.

Interesting to see Loyal win a title (and quite the comeback). I worked near there for a couple of years. Not much in the area.

Couple of great Sectional Finals for the boys, these games could have just as easily been state championship games:

Arrowhead over Kimberly in D1, Cedarburg over Kaukauna in D2. Saw them both, just great basketball.

Back to the girls, never a fan of girls basketball due to skill level. But Appleton North was fun to watch. Every player can handle the ball, make the right passes, and shoot. No size at all, but so athletic and high on basketball IQ.

I’ll bump this thread for the 2018 tournament.

I went to the Boys sectional final game last night between Pewaukee and Milwaukee Washington. Good game. It was at West Allis Central, which I’m told is one of the biggest high school gyms, capacity wise, in the state. Despite that, it was elbow to elbow in the stands. There were hundreds of people standing and there were people sitting in the rows of stairs in the bleachers, making it next to impossible to get out of the stands if you wanted to. I really wish the WIAA would consider move these games to bigger arenas, even the Panther Arena downtown if need be. I’ve been to a few playoff games at WAC and the demand for a bigger venue is definitely warranted. I’m sorry but having people sitting on the stairs is just not safe.

That must have been quite a game to see.

Back in the day (yeah, yeah) I remember my dad taking us to the Madison Sectional held at the UW-Fieldhouse. Double header on Friday night and Consolation game/Title game Saturday night. This was before the girls had a state tournament. The energy crisis ended the double headers and consolation games. With the girls tournament now in Green Bay, I wonder about the feasibility of returning to the Fieldhouse for sectional games. And yes, I can see a D1 sectional at the Arena in Milwaukee and various D1 and D2 sectionals at the satellite campuses.

I know Illinois at one time had all the super-sectionals at various D1 gyms. Don't know if they still do, stop following Illinois long time ago.

Yeah I was going to come on here and suggest they play the games at the AL or at the Klotsche Center at UWM like they used but those capacities are actually smaller than the capacities of West Allis Central. Granted they are both better set up to handle big crowds and would be much more comfortable, not to mention safer, than WAC. I think they should set up a triple header at the Panther arena downtown for the D1, D2, and D3 sectional finals. It would allow for more than enough fans and people could see multiple games if they want. It’s time the WIAA recognizes the demand for these games.

I find this unbelievable. Not only the school should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this, but the WIAA as well. Boy, things sure have changed in our society...

Probably afraid of being sued.

Sad, but correct. Need something on paper to back up a suspension. WIAA doesn't have anything in writing to do anything about it, and school athletic code violation only 2 games which were served in cross country. Neither entity could suspend him but the coach isn't forced to justify playing time or put him out on the court.

Led to opposing student section chants every time he touched the ball.

This loophole in WIAA policy will be fixed most likely at the WIAA annual meeting in April.
