[Mass Haas]

RHP Wilber Perez, the former Brewers farmhand who started the DSL All-Star Game two Sundays ago and was traded to the White Sox in the Joakim Soria deal, has already made two appearances for the DSL White Sox.

 

On Saturday, Perez tossed two scoreless relief innings (box).

 

Then, on just two days rest after that outing, Perez started for the club today and threw six no-hit innings, walking three and striking out three, lowering his ERA to 1.68 (box).

 

Hey, just seven levels from the big leagues, but still fun to follow, right?

Happened to catch a Schaumburg Boomers (Frontier League) game the other night and saw 2015 15th rounder Zach Taylor catching for the Boomers. In just his second game of the year he went 3 for 4 with a couple RBI and a walk. That may have been his best game ever as a pro. His time in Brewer organization lasted all of 40 games. The indy leagues like the Frontier League serve a great purpose giving guys who wash out of affiliated ball quickly second chances. A guy hit 2 HR for Schaumburg that night so I looked up his resume. So happens he had been drafted by the White Sox just last year and got released this spring after hitting a combined .298 combined in 2 rookie leagues last year. He had played a grand total of 37 games in the White Sox system. Imagine yourself drafted by a major league organization and getting essentially a quarter of a minor league season of action to prove yourself worthy of staying. It's a tough tough business.

2013 22nd round pick Johnny Davis has made it to the show in a Quintin Berry role for the Rays. Interesting story on his journey found here, I'm happy for the guy.

I wonder if it might not be a bad idea to look through the Indy leagues and sign a few folks to start them in full-season A ball next year. Especially when they are released after initially impressive short stints.
