Among the recent releases --

 

C Zach Taylor (15th round - 2015)

 

The junior college signee spent his age 19 and age 20 seasons in Maryvale, and was behind the plate in 20 of his 40 pro games, the rest at designated hitter or pinch-hitter. Tough numbers in limited opportunities, imagine there are some educational arrangements made for players who are enticed to leave community college to join the pro ranks, not just high schoolers.

 

Great news for the 21-year-old, the Rockies quickly scooped up Zach Taylor after his release, so he'll continue on immediately with a new affiliated organization (hat tip to Matt Eddy and Baseball America).

 

UPDATE 3/21/17: Unfortunately, the Rockies released Taylor this week.

We can't possibly provide updates on all the alumni indy leaguers out there, many of them now indy veterans, but when a recently released player joins the indy ranks for the first time, we'll let you know:

 

Former speedster minor league OF Omar Garcia, 23, released last December, signed with the Kansas City T-Bones of independent American Association.

From Eric Fryer's Wikipedia page --

 

Fryer was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers as a catcher and left fielder in the tenth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft out of Ohio State. Fryer started his professional career with the Helena Brewers in 2007. Fryer spent the 2008 season with the West Virginia Power where he won the South Atlantic League batting title and was voted into the leagues All-Star game. He batted .335 with 10 home runs and 70 RBI on the year. On February 4, 2009, Fryer was traded to the New York Yankees in exchange for Chase Wright.

Fryer (Baseball Reference) has carved out a nice little sojourny MLB career, and will be Yadi Molina's backup to begin 2017.

From earlier this offseason --

 

The White Sox signed former Brewer Caleb Gindl to a minor league deal. Gindl was coming off posting a .784 OPS for the Lancaster Barnstormers of the indy Atlantic League. Still waiting to see if his Lancaster and one time Brewer teammate Sean Halton who posted a .904 OPS for the Barnstormers finds his way back to affiliated ball.

Unfortunately, both Caleb Gindl and Sean Halton were released this week, as per Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Hate to see that after working so hard to get back to affiliated ball via the independent league route.

 

Other Brewers alumni released this week were former Rule 5 pick Colin Walsh by the Braves and LHP Trevor Seidenberger by the Padres. Seidenberger, if you recall, was traded to San Diego by the Brewers for OF Rymer Liriano. As of this post, Liriano is hanging on for a big league roster spot with the White Sox as camp winds down. Chicago claimed him off waivers from the Brewers last October.

From late in spring training, and in this case specific to Alex Farina --

 

We'll let Miller Park Prospects do the heavy lifting on the summary of departures.

 

Farina, 23, signed with the Brewers as an undrafted free agent in June of 2015 and appeared in 47 games during his two-year career in Milwaukee’s system. In 33 games last season at Wisconsin, he went 5-2 with a 2.83 ERA.

 

RHP Alex Farina with a classy goodbye...

 

Good luck to Alex, who has signed with the Rockland (Pomona, NY) Boulders of the independent Can-Am Association.

As noted elsewhere, former #1 pick Jed Bradley has retired.

 

Bradley did make the majors, logging 32 days of service last season.

 

I'm a little surprised he didn't try to stick around a bit longer. If he had logged 11 more days of service, he would have qualified for a pension of $34,000 a year, starting at age 62.

 

He does get health care for life - which is a nice benefit.

 

His retirement is odd - I mean, he's only 26, and as a lefty, he still had time to develop into a serviceable player. Perhaps there was an injury or something that prompted the decision.

Was he the guy whose mechanics they completely changed after they drafted him? I think it was and he seems to, maybe not intentionally but sort of, take a shot at the Brewers in the article when he says he was throwing mid-90's in college and then low 90's when he got to pro ball and he never got a chance to show what he could do. I've never seen him pitch at any level so maybe his mechanics were a disaster in college but to take a guy who's had success in college and completely change him after drafting him seems stupid. Especially if he loses a few MPH like Bradley alludes to in the article.

Congratulations to 30-year-old RHP Arcenio Leon, who was briefly on the Brewers' 40-man roster after they claimed him from the Astros in November 2012. Leon spent 2013 at AA Huntsville, and split AAA/AA time at Nashville and Huntsville for the Crew in 2014.

 

A professional since 2005 and now in his 13th professional season, Leon just had his minor league contract purchased by the Tigers and should debut for them shortly. Leon will be the second-oldest Venezuelan-born pitcher to make his debut in the big leagues, according to Baseball Reference. Ubaldo Heredia made his debut when he was 31 years old, while Leon is 30 years and 237 days old. (Junior Guerra was 30 years, 147 days when he debuted with the White Sox in June of 2015.)
