Exciting Draft Potential

Anyone else getting really excited about this year's draft? It looks like we'll be able to snatch up a pretty darn good player with the number five pick. The star potential among the top 5-6 position players available this year is pretty astounding.

My personal top five goes like this:

Upton, Juston

Gordon, Alex

Maybin, Cameron

Clement, Jeff

Zimmerman, Ryan

It'd be hard to be disappointed with any of those guys and we're ensured to have a chance at one of them. Throw Stephen Drew, Luke Hochevar, and Jered Weaver into the mix and it looks like we'll have quite a player to follow through our minor league system the next few years.

Who's everyone else hoping for? I can't wait for the draft!

I've been excited for this draft ever since last year's finished http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Here's my top 5 for the Brewers, which is the same as my rankings on the draft page minus the Boras clients:

1. Justin Upton

2. Alex Gordon

3. Cameron Maybin

4. Ryan Zimmerman

5. Jeff Clement

Ricky Romero, Troy Tulowitzki and Andrew McCutchen would probably fall in right after those 5, and I would be happy with any one of these guys.

I would rate them...

Alex Gordon (great combination of experience and production)

Justin Upton (his name, I think, gets his value inflated and there's no guarantee he will be a SS, which hurts his stock)

Cameron Maybin (I think he will be better than Upton, but probably won't move as fast as the phenom)

Jeff Clement (Ultimate power, premium position upgrade, what's not to like?)

Ryan Zimmerman (Premium defense, unquestioned contact skills, and showing improving power. But I do wonder if he has premium power for a premium power position)

And, as Colby opined, you have Tulo, Hochevar, and Pelfrey. Stephen Drew, though, could be an outside possibility. I like that he joined the Independent Leagues to keep in playing shape and not let the time off affect his maturation. He looks to be the most likely of the 3 re-entrants (well Townsend is barred from signing with Baltimore, so he doesn't technically count) to sign with his team prior to this draft. And as was mentioned in Baseball America today, Scott Boras is probably waiting until the last moment to extract every last dollar. But it also looks as if Stephen Drew has the most to gain by re-entering the draft (ie, he could basically name his price and wait for NY or TEX to match it).
