2017 Starting Pitching Rotation

CheezWizHed
the rotation is insane right now. there's still time to decide where to place chase anderson (and possibly junior guerra if the club doesn't want to burn his final option), but at this point, who deserves to be bumped from the starting rotation?

If Stearns makes any move in August, which he did say there would be a lot of options available, I think you include Guerra in the trade. We don't need him, he isn't that good, but some team will see his stats from last year and take a chance on an August trade.

Far as right now, maybe Garza in the pen? But they way they have been handling this season I would not be surprised to see Woodruff out of the rotation.

So I'm not a stat geek...just discovered pitching DRA today. Brewers rank 12th in baseball. So my question is this.....if the Brewers ERA is 4.06 but the DRA is 4.57 does that mean the pitchers have been a bit lucky or is the Brewers defense helping them or both? Difference between FIP and DRA?

Brewers have already used Guerra option....they can move him up or down as many times as they want the rest of the year without changing anything......

I think there's a stipulation of sorts that if he doesn't spend X number of days in the minors, an option isn't burned. Not sure on the specifics, I assume that's what he's referring to. So if we call him up quickly the option isn't burned.

I highly suspect Suter finds his way to long relief when Anderson returns. Possible that Woodruff goes to AAA, highly unlikely they would move Garza to the pen even though that move would make some sense.

if a player spends less than 20 days optioned, his option isn't burned. with september roster expansion looming, this affects not only junior guerra, but also michael blazek, keon broxton, wei-chung wang, tyler webb and brandon woodruff, as all have spent less than 20 days optioned thus far. blazek and guerra could both burn their final option this year, as could keon broxton.

Suter and Garza both made strong cases for removal from rotation when Anderson returns. Will likely come down to one more start for each. Suter has some value out of the pen. I imagine if Garza doesn't bounce back, they'll bring back Guerra or look at Jungmann or some other guys in September.

LOL. Garza a strong case for removal after one awful inning? Your boy Perez was 0-4 last night....made a pretty strong case for being removed from the 25 and replaced with Rivera (this is an appropriate analogy because of the level of absurdity along with the replacement being a worse option).

Nelson, Davies, Garza aren't going anywhere. Chase gets added to that mix then the final spot is between Woodruff (should be) or Suter at this point. Guerra was sent down to work on throwing strikes. He's pitched 1 AAA game since and walked 4 in 5 innings.

Garza had a 2.00 ERA over his last 6 starts, then had one bad inning last night. He's not getting dumped out of the rotation after one bad (really bad!) start. Like others in the game thread said last night, a lot of people are just really (really) pre-disposed to just for some reason hate Garza. His peripherals aren't great, he doesn't strike out a ton of batters, and he was really awful last year. I get all that. But for the last several starts, he was pretty good. His leash isn't going to end at one bad outing.

the two off days this week have worked quite well in the club's favor, given brent suter's injury.

today: matt garza

monday: off

tuesday: brandon woodruff on five days' rest

wednesday: zach davies on five days' rest

thursday: off

friday: jimmy nelson on six days' rest

saturday: matt garza on five days' rest

sunday: brandon woodruff on four days' rest

chase anderson could return to start by wednesday of next week on four days' rest (he's starting today for colorado springs).

I wonder if they'll try to move up Anderson a day, so he could start next Tuesday. Otherwise, they have to find a starter.

Good point. That or they could send up someone on short rest for one start(I doubt they do this). Also possible we try and use Hader and Jeffress to eat 5-6 innings in a bullpen game on Tuesday considering we will have an off day coming up. I can't see them rushing Anderson who is coming off injury. Most likely we bring up someone for a spot start. It will be an interesting decision for sure.

I wonder how prepared Woodruff will be to face major league hitters in Colorado after pitching there most of the year.

updated per this tweet . . .

monday: off

tuesday: zach davies on four days' rest

wednesday: jimmy nelson on four days' rest

thursday: off

by this point, friday's starter could be matt garza or brandon woodruff, and either would have at least four days' rest.

chase anderson named sunday's starting pitcher.

assume that friday and saturday will be covered by matt garza and brandon woodruff, with woodruff optioned to make room for anderson.

If Woodruff is optioned after Saturday's game they can just go with a four man rotation of Davies, Nelson, Garza, Anderson until September call up due to all of the off days.

good point, but woodruff is scheduled for friday. junior guerra was optioned 30 july. i'm not sure if one counts that day or not when calculating 20 days optioned, so guerra could be in line to be recalled after the game on 18 august, and possibly still have his final option preserved.

Going to be interesting especially with Jungmann throwing well

It sure is nice having an abundance of quality rotation options in August. That should keep the Espinos of the world from ever having to make starts for this team. I have to admit, though, that it would be nice to see Jungmann up and making starts with the big club, just to see what, if anything, they have in him for the future. Even if he only tops out as a serviceable #4, there is still value there, especially when you consider the injuries that a typical starting rotation faces in a given season.

I think that's exactly what they'll do. Tough spot for Anderson to return, but hopefully he's up to it. They'll have choices in September. Guerra, Suter, Woodruff and perhaps Jungmann will all be around.

If Garza doesn't want to help the team by going to the pen then they should release him. He isn't any good as it is and he probably wouldn't be any good in the pen with a bad attitude either. Be better off to just get rid of him.

Maybe the pen would be a great fit for Garza. Let him throw hard for an inning and heat that sucker up a bit.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
