Captain Kirk to DET?

From MLB Trade Rumors, Detroit is looking for a cheap CF stopgap. The article lists Bourjos, Bourn, Crisp, Austin Jackson, and Desmond Jennings as potential options. None of those options seem particularly appealing to a team trying to compete. They're either old, injury prone, or can't hit a lick. Kirk is certainly no world beater but he seems serviceable in all areas, is cheap, and has multiple years of control. Do the Tigers have anything worth trying to acquire?

K-Rod!!!! (kidding)

I'd try to get Justin Wilson and his 10 K/9 left arm to see if he can be turned into a closer http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wilsoju10.shtml

or Bruce Rondon and his 11.1 K/9 http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rondobr01.shtml

thinking that Kirk alone wouldn't suffice for those guys though....

I can't imagine Detroit would give anything of value for him. There are countless versions of KN in the FA version of Target's 75-90% off clearance section, which is right where he'd be if he were a free agent himself.

I think he could get a MLB contract elsewhere, but his trade value lies somewhere in between 'bag of balls' and 'steak dinner.'

If he had any legitimate value I'd imagine we would have taken a low level lottery ticket for him back in August.

Kirk for a couple hundred thousand versus any free agent for a couple million? Jackson is the only one on that list that I would consider but Kirk's making below clearance section. He's like last day of a moving sale territory compared to a free agent.

Well, Stearns controls the roster and CC, the playing time. Given those and general comments, they both seem to like him as a player. He is LH which seems to carry weight with DS.

If he hit like he did at Miller last season, he'd have some value. Off the top of my head 3 possibilities for the weird splits

A) an extreme outlier of randomness

b) he sees the ball really well there

C) loves the night life

I'd like to see other guys get a shot to build value, forget the handedness.

Brewers value in Nieuwenhuis as a guy who can platoon from time to time in CF and RF. With both Broxton and Santana with much weaker splits vs. RHP, they can definitely use a guy capable in that role. Only question I have is whether there's a better option for that role. I don't see one internally, but Nieuwenhuis' modest .732 OPS vs. RHP in 2016 would have me looking for one. Colby Rasmus is still out there though how much of an upgrade if any he would be is debatable but at least he's had some decent years as recently as 2015. Why not bring Rasmus in and let them compete or experiment this spring with Scooter in the OF?

If Detroit wanted Nieuwenhuis type, they'd just go and get Rasmus, who shouldn't cost all that much.

I think your forgetting that Detroit is still looking to shed payroll. Considering Rasmus signed for $5 MM and can get another $2 MM in incentives, its clear Detroit did not want spend much (if any money) on this type of move...
