Boycott Steve's on Bluemound (SOBs)

AdvantageSchneider
Went to SOBs tonight with some friends. We go there often during the baseball season using their shuttle to get to the game. Had a pleasant time as always, until the end of the night. They played the "Go cubs go" song. We started booing and yelling to turn that music off. They turned the song up. We walked out and will never go back. I always thought they were a Brewer bar. Apparently not.

Maybe they lost a bet?

i agree seems like a terrible business decision, all of those bars on blue mound are all competing for the same dollar. its not like its water street with a guaranteed customer base (close to 2 major universities). You ultimately want to try to appear to the most amount of people, and playing that song is not going to do that.

Don't kid yourself, this is a symptom of a potential real threat for Brewer ownership. As long as the Brewers are intent on not even competing and there's a team 90 miles away that's not only competing but winning championships with a profile that dwarfs the product the Brewers have, there's going to be fans, particularly young ones that will gravitate toward the Cubs. The White Sox are petrified that they are going to lose an entire generation of fans in Chicago to the Cubs. Don't think that can't happen in Milwaukee? Think again. All you have to do is look at the following the Bulls have had since the Jordan era. Bradley Center has filled with Bulls fans ever since when they've played each other and not all those fans drove up from Chicago. Only now is there some light at the end of the tunnel for the Bucks. The Brewers need to compete sooner rather than later with their young talent or they'll never get some of those fans back.

In what context was this played?

Was it played on the Jukebox thing where someone in the bar played it? How do we know that the bar itself was responsible for it? The volume was probably them, but again, what was the context?

Was it a full bar or just a few people? If it was a few people and it was the bartender doing it...well, that's probably just to get more in tips. Can't blame them for doing so.

It's also hard to blame the entire bar itself, yeah it happened there, but the actions of one bartender doesn't make the entire bar anti-Brewers.

I won't disagree with any of that. However, I'm thrilled that Stearns could care less about any of that. His job is to rebuild this team the right way, and that could take 2 more years or 5. If some Brewer fans become Cubs fans, they're bandwagon fans who will be back when the Brewers are winning again. Will some become Cubs fans permanently? I guess, but good riddance. Not to mention some Cubs "fans" will become Brewers fans when the tables turn. It does work both ways.

This is a team (the Milwaukee Brewers) that had a CHICAGO BEAR (Peanut Tillman) throw out the first pitch at Miller Park during a Brewers Cubs series.

Can you imagine the Cubs having AJ Hawk or Clay Matthews throw out the first pitch at Wrigley?

I don't know if it was played through the jukebox. I assume so. If you can turn the volumn up I assume you can skip a song or mute it if you want.

The bar was not full, rather empty, SOBs is a pretty big place. It was the Friday night before New Years. Slims was closed when we left at 1AM. I don't see how you get more tips by playing tha song. We weren't the only ones booing.

I would hope our playoff appearances would innoculate our fanbase from the cubs disease. I mean I could see some weak fans being picked off by the cubs social disease, but I would think most people have fond memories of the recent success we've had along with some pretty good personalities, Prince, Braun, CC, Cargo, Lucroy. It's not like we have been wandering in the desert for 30 years without a break. We've had a couple of stops at an oasis. That should get the majority of the fans through to when we will be competitive again.

I really don't see THAT big of an issue with it. If someone paid money to play the song and the bar was more or less empty...then who cares? It Yeah, they could have skipped it I suppose (and yes, they can do that), but is it really that big of a deal? It's just a song. The jukebox is there for people to play whatever they want - if a customer paid money to play it, they kind of have a right to hear it. If it was going to cause a riot or fight or be a big issue, then sure skip it. But as you said...the bar wasn't full.

As far as tips go, if the Cubs fans were sitting at the bar and maybe had a large tab (or even if they didn't), if the bartender skips the song they just paid money to play...you don't see how that could negatively effect their tip?? Having bartended in the past, I can tell you first hand that you go out of your way to keep customers happy with hopes that they'll reward you with a tip - especially on a slow night.

It wouldn't be if it was played at Applebees or something. But this is supposed to be a Brewers bar. Imagine what would happen if Stadium View in GB played the 85 Bears theme song "Super Bowl Shuffle." Yea, that wouldn't end well.

The TGI Friday's at Miller Park had (and may still have) Yogi Berra quotes all over, and at one point had a Cubs sign hanging up on their wall. Yogi Berra is looked at as a baseball icon, but c'mon, and the Cubs sign?! How any of that was approved is beyond me.

The real problem is the fact that the song was even available to play...

If it was a jukebox, why would the song even be on it?

If it is a digital jukebox I doubt they have the choice of what is on it.

Yogi Berra, no problem. But a Cubs sign?? Yea, that needs to come down if it hasn't already. I've been in there enough and never noticed it, so hopefully that has been destroyed...errrrr corrected.

I'm a reasonable guy. I can see the bartender letting the cubs fan play the song because he wants a tip. My friends and I should then be allowed to boo and yell so loud that we don't have to hear that tripe. When the bartender turns up the song, he has in effect taken sides with the cubs fans, and at that point let me know that my Brewer dollars are going to take a back seat to cubs dollars. No thank you sir, I'll go someplace else to drink.

Good point. Jukeboxes have been streaming since the availability of broadband Internet.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

And then there are the Packer/Cubs fans that cheer on a Duke/Ohio State/Alabama....

In a way, I really don't careabout my neighbors' allegiances, however middle school it gets- pure front runners, in this case. Cheer for whomever, right? Local Bandwagon hoppers I can even respect, those that are swept up by an area team's play and follow more games, buy the jersey, etc.

However, in a totally different way, I very much care when a friend/family member starts bragging about how well their front runner team is doing PLUS how bad my team IS. That is when the fit hits the shan.

It could have been an employee rather than a reflection of management. I live in Bay View and just on my block we've had people move in who are from Illinois. In general it seems as if younger people are less friendly, saying hi or chatting about their dog, the weather, what not, but the people from Illinois are quite unfriendly.

Heck, the bartender could have been my neighbor. I know he's worked a a bartender and he wears Bears and Black Hawks stuff. His wife is nice as can be, but he doesn't speak to me.

p.s. gypcasino, impressive resourcefulness

Frankly, "go cubs go" is not worth banning a bar over. Call me weird, but I go to bars for good drinks, food, and service. Others go for cheap drinks and food. I havent been in over a decade, but I hear the food has improved a bunch in the past year, drinks cheap, bathroom pristine, free pool on sunday, and a good shuttle to the game. Frankly, the pros of the updates outweigh any past negatives.
