Jason Rogers DFA

Recommended Posts

He could still be good target as a MiLB/NRI signing for AAA depth. Don't we lack a solid 1B for Colorado Springs? Ideally he's not a guy we'd hope to see in MIL, but kinda like K-Rod and Jeffress, I think there could well be a comfort factor about Milwaukee & the Brewers' organization that could be beneficial.

At minimum, Rogers strikes me as a RH & better (i.e., more productive at the plate, not nearly as many holes in his bat) version of Kirk Nieuwenhuis -- not that we need another RH bat or backup OF type, but he does have something of a track record at the MLB level that might make him a decent fall-back option & bench guy vs. having prospects sit on the bench.

Yes boy it looks like a lot of people overvalued Jason. Great trade for the Crew and Stearns

I don't know if you could really say overvalued at the time. Pittsburgh traded for him before they acquired John Jaso. Broxton is/was a below .800 OPS OF stuck behind the stars of McCutchen, Marte, and Polanco, with Austin Meadows on the rising ranks. Josh Bell was on the cusp, appearing to become a long-term 1b that I'd assume they didn't want to bring up for either loss of team control year, nor the Super 2 cutoff. Allowing them to use Rogers at 1b for near half season, while Bell's status became what they wanted. But then they added Jaso. I dunno maybe they believed he wasn't going to sign with them prior to the trade. But his veteran signing resulted in Rogers losing his playing time. I don't Rogers was ever believed to become a 1st team type 1b starter. Just a solid 2nd teamer who gets you by. You go to 2nd team's and Min. has Mauer. Cincy has Votto. Tampa has a use for him. SD has Wil Myers. Atl-Freddie Freeman. Oak Yonder Alonso better being lefty. Arz-Goldschmidt Philly-finally moved on from Howard. Seen success with a Tommy Joseph. Angels-CJ Cron. Finally the Rockies, who could use him. That's only 2 teams plus only some invites with insurance behind current 1b.

It was not like Keon Broxton was a shining star in the minors and most certainly not with his start for 2016.

We got lucky to this point. Now you hope Broxton continues his breakout.

I could see Milw reacquiring Rogers because we are one of few 2nd teams who could use a 1b fillin.

Yah, at the time the Broxton for Rogers part made a lot of sense for both teams. Broxton was a blocked wild card and Pittsburgh needed a first baseman who could get them by until the longterm answer was ready (How it ended up, with the Pirates trying to acquire every semi-decent first baseman they could get their hands on, is another matter). The contending team took a higher floor guy who put together good at-bats and had some big league success, and the rebuilding team got a blocked high-ceiling, low-floor prospect. Broxton looks like he will work out, but this was the type of trade that made sense for both teams.

Getting a pitching prospect as intriguing as Supak along with Broxton, however, was a nice piece of work.

As for bringing Rogers back, it might make some sense if they are going to be going with five bench bats, as he'd probably be a better pinch-hitting option than Sogard or Rivera, but I've got a feeling they will be keeping 13 pitchers this season.

I agree with Brewcrewdue80. I'd have no problem with seeing Rogers back in the fold with the hopes he can put together a better season at AAA and for 1b insurance and/or ph duties. He had a tough 2016 but I really liked the bat skills he showed in 2015. Hopefully he hooks on with a good opportunity somewhere, he's one of those guys I just have to root for.

I would rather we give Cooper full playing time at AAA and Rogers doesn't belong in the majors. Pass.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Rogers cleared waivers, and was outrighted by Pittsburgh to AAA.

I may be mistaken, but because Rogers has seven pro years, he should have the right to refuse the outright and become a free agent. That should take a week or so to be worked out.
