To be honest, I didn't hear too much that I found exciting in 2016. I'l throw out a top 5. I'll be in the minority here, that will be obvious, as most seem to listen to a lot of stuff (almost all of it) that I have never even heard of...

1. Cheap Trick - Bang, Zoom, Crazy.....Hello

2. Operation Mindcrime - Resurrection

3. Metallica - Hardwired for Destruction

4. Sixx A.M. - Prayers for the Damned

5. Pretty Reckless - Who You Selling For

Honorable Mention: Sixx A.M. - Prayers for the Blessed

I listened to one of the songs on the new Metallica album and I wanted to wash my ears out with some kind of acid. Just absolutely horrible that album isn't even hard rock it is like nursery school rock.

Wow, that is harsh... lol

I liked it from the get go, but was not a fan of Death Magnetic...

It was to soft for me. Not thrash metal not a single song on that album would be considered thrash metal. It is like they are playing lullabies and they look like they belong in a retirement home.

If you think their new one is full of lullabies, I think you need to listen again. I like hard stuff, but I'm not the typical fan of thrash. I'm a metalhead, but hate the newer stuff that sounds like the Cookie Monster is on lead vocals (if you can call it vocals, it's more like guttural mumbles at loud volume...just horrible) I was a HUGE fan of St. Anger, that album is just so good, start to finish, and very different from most hard metal...

Oh, and I don't think that Metallica consider themselves "thrash" metal these days... I wouldn't consider anything they have done since Master of Puppets as thrash metal, those days ended a LONG time ago,

rwa12, I've only heard part of the new Tribe album. I didn't wanna download it because it's coming out on vinyl next week (I think), and I'm sure that will come with a DL code. From every review I've heard from all my friends, it's the album of the year. Can't wait to hear it.

Other than that, the only 2016 released records I got this year were:

Descendents: Hypercaffium Spazziate

Big Eyes: Stake My Claim

I bought a ton of records from Dope Folks earlier in the fall, but they are all reissues of rare 90's underground hip hop.

I didn't buy much from this year because there is so much great music from the past in general that I search out, it's hard to keep up with everything coming out today. I just don't have the time to do it like I used to. Youtube/Soundcloud also makes it easier to just listen to part of an album and dismiss it. When you used to have to buy physical copies of records, there was more of an obligation to give a record at least 3 or 4 listens since you spent the money on it.

Also the price of vinyl has shot up so much lately, that I don't spend as much on records. My friends and I used to all buy vinyl when no one else did because it was cheaper than CDs. People would ask "they still make the vinyls?" (yes, vinyl with an "s") Now you can buy LPs almost anywhere and they are 20-30 bucks. Thanks Record Store Day! *Thumbs Down*

Bikeage, I really liked it. They had it on Amazon Music, so I've been able to enjoy it there. Kinda reminds me of old school Tribe, mixed with maybe the newish Kendrick Lamar? Either way, enjoy! Check out the Childish Gambino if you have a chance, it's not rap. It's kind of like 70's soul/funk. I really don't know how to explain it. He's trying a bit hard, but the overall feel of the album is pretty neat.

Not all of the new metal is screaming yes some of it is but from 2015 these are two of my favorite FFDP songs:

Metallica "Hard Wired...To Self-Destruct" easily my favorite of 2016. To me, best work they have done since Black Album and Load (yes I liked Load).

I am a huge fan of St. Anger myself, I can't for the life of me understand why everyone but me hates that album...lol

  • 2 weeks later...

I acquired quite a bit of music last year, but most of it was released previous to 2016. Some 2016 releases, in no particular order:

The Claypool Lennon Delirium - [cite]Monolith of Phobos[/cite]

Sunblind Lion - [cite]Live Lion Volume II[/cite]

Violent Femmes - [cite]We Can Do Anything[/cite]

The Abler Boys - [cite]See in Sound[/cite]

The Cactus Blossoms - [cite]You're Dreaming[/cite]

By the way, if you ever get a chance to see Sunblind Lion, do it. Guys in their sixties performing original 70s-style rock with albums released in 1976, 1978, 1980, 2014, and 2016.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I bought less in 2016 year than I ever have, but I'm thinking only a killer Bob Dylan bootleg series release pushed 2015 over this one.

Bon Iver - 22, A Million was an obsession of mine for at least a month.

Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool is beautiful.

Sam Beam/Jesca Hoop - Love Letter For Fire surprised me.

The Avalanches - Wildflower - at about 16 years of waiting, couldn't possibly live up to expectations.

Going off topic, here are some other artists who went a long time between albums:

Violent Femmes (2016): 16 years between studio albums; 10 years after a live album; 1 year after a vinyl EP (which hardly counts)

The Suburbs (2013): 27 years between studio albums; 20 years after a CD of previously released material

Sunblind Lion (2014): 36 years between studio albums; 34 years after a live album

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

[cite]Love and Warhol[/cite] by Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl is a 2016 single that hasn't been released commercially and isn't currently on an album. But since it's 2016 music, this thread seems to be the best place to mention it. The song was written for an Andy Warhol exhibit and is available on SoundCloud.

I think the new Metallica album is actually in the "really good" (not great) category. While it's not what I'd call *thrash* category, it's got a lot of elements that are musically and thematically similar to earlier Metallica, and just reminiscent of what made them an actual good band.

Death Magnetic was crap, and I think the main reason a lot of people didn't like St. Anger was that there was a lot of experimentation going on with the sound quality that was completely unnecessary (and no guitar solos? Come on!)

Some people won't be happy unless they get a MoP 2.0, which......that's never going to happen. It's just not. But I think this new album was probably the best album at least since the Black album, and it's worth listening to. After Re-load, St. Anger, and then Death Magnetic, I just expected to be disappointed yet again, but this was mildly surprising
