Fox Valley - Potential Move

RobDeer 45
Hortonville is fairly large but it is in a small town setting. It gets a lot of students from rural areas. I have had many dealings with them through the years and they are quite friendly. The area west of Neenah is rural very quickly but growing. An area you might want to check out is the Sherwood area just east of Menasha. I don't know where the borderline is but Sherwood itself is part for the Hilbert or Brillion school district which are both small schools. So if you are looking for that sort of thing the areas east of the river are probably going to be more to your liking.

This website can give you more details on different neighborhoods/cities and their walkability:

Appleton as a whole doesn't grade very well but a few neighborhoods aren't bad.

I looked at that link and it was spot on with Appleton being a car dependant city. Not only dependant but until recently not really interested in catering to bikes at all. It is changing slowly but still not where it needs to be. Very few bike lanes and places to park bikes are pretty much nonexistent. I love Appleton but that does bug me.

With apologies for going a bit off topic for a post...I just entered the hawing address into Walkscore and got a 78. Woot.

Carry on.

We got a 97...granted this does not take crime into account. So while I can walk everywhere I need to dodge police tape every so often :)

My father in law lived in winneconne forever. Nice, tight knit, little town with very friendly people. The Finn and Feather is pretty popular with decent food/atmosphere. They also have a riverboat that goes out regularly for additional fun. It has great fishing and the lake is really nice in that area. Like all small lakes it gets green later on in summer. I honestly don't know much about the school other than most people I know who went there liked it and it is fairly small. It has a very nice swimming hole that I think was man made. It combines the elements of a pool and beach pretty well. If you have young kids it is nice and safe. Very scenic overall but the police tend to be pretty strict when it comes to speeding and such. Another place close to Winneconne and very similar in most respects is Omro. If you are looking for small town, Mayberry style living both are pretty much up your ally.

We are actually in the process of building a house in Dale (5 minutes south of Hortonville) but it will be the Hortonville school district. We wanted to have a big yard and we've heard great things about the school district so we were drawn to the area.

BrewCrew02 - sorry for the late response. Been crazy. Ya, we are leaning that way too. Big yard, country feel, but still close to town. I'm glad you've heard good things about the school district. I've tried to do as much research as I can. I wish school was in so I could get a feel for the schools while they are in action. Oh well!

Someone here asked to let them know when an episode of Around the Corner about Appleton was on. I forgot all about it but it was on PBS last night. But here is the link to see the episode online. http://www.milwaukeepbs.org/local-programs/programs/around-corner-john-mcgivern

Nice, I'll have to check it out. He didn't really interview any of us or even come inside the shop so I thought it was unlikely to be included. We did talk to him outside when they stopped by. He said he wanted to get some footage because he had a job as a gorilla when he was younger. He seemed like a really nice dude. Glad we made the cut. Did the shoe shine boy make it in? I know the family a bit and he's a pretty decent kid.

I saw it last night. Getting as much play as Cleos is pretty big time. Not quite shoe shine boy big, but big nonetheless. :laughing

I had no idea how the city got its name but sucking up to the inlaws for some cash kind of makes me proud.

My band just played Greenville NYE, I was really surprised driving around hanging up posters how close it is to the mall area. Probably not close enough to walk but like a 5-10 minute drive.

That southeast side of Neenah mentioned above by the lake is really cool. I did that Runaway to the Bay relay race and ran though there. Really surprised by the cool houses, pool, the lake, and being close to stores/shops on that side of town (you could probably walk to Pick N Save)

Well those were our two favorite places when looking for a house, but ended up a bit further out in Hortonville. Greenville has basically become part of Appleton now. Lots of houses being built there! We wanted a little more of a yard so that's what pushed us a little further west.

My nickname for Greenville is the thriving metropolis. It really started to grow in the early 2000's. The new growth area looks to be around the Menasha Appleton border going out towards Sherwood and Kaukauna.

Currently I am living and teaching in Iowa near Iowa City. My wife and I want to target a move back to Wisconsin. We are looking at the Madison and Milwaukee areas but also the Appleton/Oshkosh region as well. I teach MS/HS social studies and have coached hockey, baseball and football over the years (more baseball in recent years). Anyone have any insight to what schools to target or areas to target to live? I’ve always been very intrigued about this area to live in. I’m originally from Superior, so waaaaaay up north lol.
