Bickford Suspended 50 Games

2nd positive test drug of abuse.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Just unbelievable to me that guys can't lay off this when they know without a doubt that it will be tested, and can cost them games, potentially huge amounts of money or even a career. I like beer, but if you told me to lay off it for 15 years in order to make millions playing sports, I wouldn't touch the stuff. There are only two possible explanations - true drug addiction or utter stupidity. Either way it is very sad.

If it's for weed, the MLB is more stupid than I already think they are. Try being progressive for once in your history.

Players on MLB 40-man rosters are not subject to suspension for marijuana, so they have probably the most progressive policy of the major US sports.

Minor league players, on the other hand, still do get suspended for pot.

Ahh this is why we had to dump Miguel Diaz and not add him to the 40man. We are going to need that spot so Bickford can actually get on the field and/or not get banned(can't remember if they still ban players and if for what drugs).

Not a good sign regarding the "makeup" that is deemed important for pitchers.

Are you saying pitchers who smoke don't have the makeup to be good pitchers?

This kind of makes me hate baseball (not really, I love it)... but seriously...this is like government level stupid logic

The Brewers wouldn't need to consider adding Bickford to the 40-man early until after his third failed drug of abuse test. He has another 23 months before he needs to be added to the 40-man for Rule 5 protection.

Well if you had valid reason he won't stop it might make sense to add him earlier and avoid a 100 game suspension(nearly a year).

What happens if he gets caught again? 100 games? Full season?

100 games for third positive test of a drug of abuse.

Actually, McCalvy with an update:

Third offense for drug of abuse is a one-year suspension. After that, Commissioner's discretion, up to permanent suspension from MLB/MiLB.

There are only two possible explanations - true drug addiction or utter stupidity.

Jeffress smoked in an effort to treat seizures resulting from an undiagnosed case of juvenile epilepsy, so there are more than two possible explanations, though I agree the two you listed are the most likely.

Couldn't he have gotten some kind of exception for that?

Never understood why players still do this stuff. Regardless of how you feel about weed every minor leaguer knows it's against the rules and they will be suspended if they use it. Bickford is a legitimate prospect who could make millions of dollars throughout his career. To risk that so you can smoke weed is just so stupid to me. Not as stupid as what Larry Sanders did but stupid none the less.
