Tyler Thornburg traded to Boston for 3B Travis Shaw, SS Mauricio Dubon, RHP Josh Pennington, SS Yeison Coca

patrickgpe

David Stearns has done what he said he would do - he has acquired young, controllable talent.

I'm sure people are wishing the Brewers had gotten a prospect with a recognized name, instead of getting this sort of return for Thornburg, but Milwaukee got plenty of talent back in this trade.

In future trades, and in the next draft, it looks like, "pitchers and catchers" for me .... the Brewers need most, what they've traded away. They need to keep working on the next catcher, and as all teams always will, they need as many arms as they can find.

I know he has less than ideal size, but does anyone know if Gennett has ever even attempted to play anywhere else? Like RF or 3B? Did he ever try any other positions in the minors or anything? From what I recall (which is hazy at best) he was pretty much always at 2b but I wasn't sure if that's just because we needed him there or if he just physically can't play anywhere else?

Scooter doesn't have the arm strength for SS or 3B. Or the range to play CF. Could he play LF? Probably. But that's a pretty weak bat for LF.

People hated Khris Davis in LF...Gennett? Haha oh I would love it just to see the reaction. Horrible defense and a horrible bat.

Plus it begs the question, why would you try to force an average bat somewhere in the line-up?

Maybe this Rule 5 Eligible player for PTBNL

Justin Haley, rhp, Red Sox: Haley is the owner of possibly the coolest pre-pitch setups in the minors. He sets up on the third-base side of the rubber, with his other foot straddling the rubber. With the ball in his glove raised in front of his face, he looks in for the sign with his pitching hand cocked at his waist, fingers dancing back and forth like Wyatt Earp ready to draw. He gets the sign for the pitch and then locks, loads and fires. As a starter, Haley’s velo ticked up as the season warmed up. Late in the season he was sitting 90-92, but his fastball plays up because he locates it well. He also has an above-average slider as well as a useable curveball and changeup. He was dominant in Double-A this year and solid in Triple-A as a starter. Because he has Triple-A experience and feel, and he’s been impressive in the Dominican Republic this fall with Escogido (2-0, 0.38, 24 IP, 12 H, 4 BB, 14 SO), Haley has made a pretty strong case to be picked.

Stearns said Dubon will start either at @skysox or @BiloxiShuckers. Pennington either @TimberRattlers or @CarolinaMudcats.

Josh Pennington quotes in this article:

“I woke up, and I saw I had six missed calls from a buddy on the Red Sox,” Pennington, 21, said by telephone Tuesday afternoon. “I scrolled down (on my phone) more and saw messages from my agent saying I was traded to Milwaukee. At that point I jumped out of bed. It was one hell of a wake up call.”

Dubron slots in at #9 for MLB.com's top 30 Brewers prospects, between Diaz and Lara. Pretty impressive. Pennington does not make the cut.

OT, but my goodness, what a list. The stockpile of talent appears to be near or at an all-time high.

I just can't get on board with this move. The reliever market was insane last year at the deadline. For Will Smith alone we got a top 100 starting pitcher prospect (and our #5). Not to mention what we got from Texas by throwing Jeffress in the Lucroy trade. Thornburg was probably better than both of those guys and if he put up numbers even close to last years he probably could have gotten us another very quality starting pitching prospect, which this system still desperately needs. Others said it but this is quantity over quality. We need quality.

I'm not in love with this deal either based on Shaws second half and the reliever market.

But, if you think Thornburgs insane season was a fluke, this is a decent deal and selling at his peak. If you rate it compared to where a 28 year old in his prime performed, then it's a quarter for three nickels.

It just depends on how you project Thornburg the next three seasons, and I'm sure it's all over the place.

Bad deal? No.

Compared to what other relievers have been traded for? Disappointing.

I understand he only had one great season but he's also cheaper, and under more team control than most other relievers. I expected at least one highly ranked prospect for Thornburg but Stearns has a love for the under the radar types. That's all well and good and sometimes it will work out but there's a reason guys are "under the radar" and not talked about.

Star players come out of all tiers of prospect rankings and all rounds of the draft. Don't get hung up on lists. The only prospect list that matters is the internal Brewers rankings and Stearns got his guy. That's good enough for me.

Now just let the cream rise to the top.

I pretty much agree with this. There's risk in holding on to Thornburg and him getting hurt/not being productive but I'd take that risk.

Feeling a little melancholy.

The Red Sox get Thornburg and Sale today.

The Brewers get guys that they can control cheaply for a long time.

Why there isn't a bigger uproar over a level playing field in the MLB, I don't know. Every other sport has it. Certainly not my intention of derailing this thread with revenue talk, but it's hard to get excited when we have to operate on a level 10 tiers below the rich. I commend Stearns for doing what he has to do and how he has to do it, but some days the task just seems impossible. Playing the "hope the stars align in 5 years" vs "sign who you need and keep who you want" is discouraging to watch.
