What's bugging you? (2016)

LouisEly
Called Snap on, because a part from a pressure washer I received from Christmas didn't work. Today was the first day I broke it out of the box. Called, waited on line for 5 minutes or so, disconnected, called, waited on line for 15 minutes, talked to a woman which I gave serial numbers and model numbers to. She put me on hold to supposedly look up info, and that hold took so long it sent me to a voice mail. I call back again and now get the message were closed, and please call back tomorrow.

I pretty much never watch ESPN, especially not SportsCenter. I needed some background noise this morning so I turned it on figuring to see baseball highlights. I saw about 30 seconds of baseball in the 45 minutes I watched. I got a half hour of college football scrimmage coverage and 10 minutes of NBA playoffs and EPL soccer highlights. The only baseball I saw was during the top 10 plays.

Only try a few at a time or set your computer to update automatically and leave it on overnight.

Seems to work for now, installed 18 updates... was set for midnight but didn't install them until 6:15am. I'll monitor, but hopefully the issue is just with checking for but not downloading updates.

Speaking of software, anyone who knows software development and accounting/finance could make a very good living for themselves developing and marketing an alternative to Quicken. Given how awful their releases have been the last 3 years, and subsequently how frustrated and upset their loyal users are (see Amazon reviews, one written by me), any alternative would be jumped at by a lot of people.

It won't be a unicorn, but you could easily get hundreds of thousands of people to fork over $19.95 for the software and $9.95/year to subscribe to download account transactions.

I never watch Sports Center anymore. I actually don't watch ESPN anymore unless it's a game or pre game stuff for College or NFL. This is coming from a person that would watch it non stop back when I was a kind through just out of college. I loved sports center when it was a highlight show.....but I understand why it's changed. Anyone can see highlights immediately now online, so a TV highlight show doesn't bring much to the table. Except for of course all us old timers who miss the way it used to be (age 30 and up maybe :) )

There is nothing worse than working on a project for 2-3 days only to see it thrown to the dogs before it even sees the light of day. Frickin frustrating.

2-3 days? Man. I'm in software development. Regularly work on projects for 2-3 months that don't see the light of day....

Having to pay over $500 to get coaching authorization in Iowa for high school athletics after I have coached in Wisconsin and New Mexico. On top of that expense, it is two weekends long and full days. Friday 5:30pm-10pm, Saturday & Sunday from 8am-8pm. What a joke.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

It's because motorcycles overheat much easier than cars. They are for the most part designed to be cooled by air flow and not coolant, thus if they are stuck in traffic without moving they will overheat. They are smaller and much more efficient than cars, so they don't want to discourage people from riding them. The alternative makes traffic worse.

The point about times changing and phone distractions are valid, and riders need to keep that in mind.

Does the law contain language regarding how fast they are allowed to go when driving between cars? Overheat or no overheat, there is no need for them to drive as fast and as carelessly as they do when they speed between cars. I understand the reward for being fuel efficient argument, but at what cost? In my opinion, these riders are taking great risks with the manner in which they pass between cars and I think I would have more sympathy for the driver that accidentally strays a foot off course and causes serious injury or worse to a speeding motorcyclist that I would for the rider of the motorcycle.

The practice is known as "lane splitting" and the CA law technically only allows it at speeds below 5, 10, or 15 mph (I can't remember which one exactly, but I'm leaning towards 15). Unfortunately, many CA riders seem to think the law gives them carte blanche. I'm very much opposed to it ever being allowed here. I've heard all the arguments from those that want it to become legal here and/or in all 50 states but I just can't get behind it.

I've been riding since I was 9 years old and I spent a lot of years in various types of racing. I only wear a helmet when and where required. If traffic is at a standstill I'll take the shoulder. I've been known at times to violate a traffic law or two. The point is, I'm about as far from a "Safety Nazi" as a human could possibly be; but when it comes to lane splitting, count me out.

From what I'm reading, the 5/10/15 (or whatever) requirement is a guideline rather than a law. Also, it appears that California doesn't have a law regarding lane splitting. It's allowed because unlike the other 49 states, there's no law that prohibits it.

The main safety advantage of lane splitting is that motorcycles are much less likely to be struck from behind. In traffic jam conditions, when cars or trucks are struck from behind, injuries are unlikely. And chances are very good that the vehicles involved won't even be damaged. However, with a motorcycle, the chances injury or damage are high, and fatalities occur.

I think a law should exist, although I envision enforcement being difficult. Enforcement would have to be done on by officers on motorcycles that are also lane splitting at high speeds. Or it'd have to be done from the air.

These are the basic California Highway Patrol lane splitting guidelines:

[list-sp]

  1. Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.
  2. It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster --- danger increases as overall speed increases.
  3. Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes.
  4. Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.
  5. Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.

[/list-sp]

The document goes into significantly more detail than what I listed above.

Running out of water. This is a real thing where I live; we get water delivery on a semi-weekly basis, so sometime today a city truck will refill our 1000 gallon tank, after a completely different truck empties the other tank we have. Today is water day and we ran out last night. I've got dirty socks and dirty dishes and a shower would be nice.

Not as bad as running out of water, but the circuit breaker to my classroom keeps tripping. It's to the point that half the day I have no power. They "say" they're coming tomorrow to replace the breaker but, for crying out loud, this has been happening for almost 2 weeks and they're FINALLY going to get to it? You'd think that classrooms with power might be a slightly higher priority.

I lived in North Pole for 3 years. There are times I miss Alaska, but not the amenities. Happy that I had a water source while I was there, friends who lived in Salcha were not so lucky.

Sorry for my ignorance but how do you not have water in Alaska?

I wanted to read up on this myself, and after looking at google maps to see where Bethel is (wow!) I stumbled across this article:

Does anyone a) use Firefox as their browser, b) bank with Citi, and c) have Firefox lock up/not respond when you try to access your Citi account using Firefox? After logging in it freezes up for a few seconds and then wants to open some javascript file. When I get past this and try to get a virtual account number that window crashes and says Adobe Flash Player has crashed.

I use firefox extensively, but don't bank with Citi.

I will say, in my experience, quite a few banks fail miserably at writing cross-browser code and invariably run best when using IE.

I used to use FF quite a bit 3-4 years ago. It ran well for a while, but they didn't seem to keep up with upgrades. I was constantly getting "please update your browser" messages, but there were no upgrades available. So I went back to IE for any finance/banking items.
