Kind of surprising, but maybe they figure they can find a cheaper option who will provide more balance offensively and defensively?

They didn't sign Carter until January last year, so Stearns must have confidence that there will be another guy available before spring.

Carter is a fun player to watch, but he's still just a 1 win player. For $8+ million, at age 29, on a team that is still rebuilding, I can see why they would pass.

He's not going to be on this roster when they are ready to compete, so I guess it's fine to let him go.

Then trade him, don't give him away.

Very bad decision by Stearns.

Why would a guy that 29 other teams deemed not worthy of a 1 year/$3M dollar offer a year ago with no trade compensation, and who was pretty much exactly the guy who everyone expected, be worth anything in trade compensation now, with an $8M dollar price tag attached?

How do you know someone would even trade for him? $8mil likely no one...don't forget they probably went around the league to gauge interest before non tendering him.

This was a no brainer to me. They can easily just resign him for less if they want.

Cant be upset. It was discussed here if this would happen. The money for a 1WAR 1b just wasnt worth it it appears. Remember Carter had to have this offense just to be 1WAR. MLBTR suggests 8.1mil but if it was higher? In a way, you can applaud the decision that Stearns will pass on overextending someone's pricetag in relation to performance. Look forward to the future in Stearns GM moves.

I'm okay with the move.

I like Carter, but I also see he's very limited, and let's face it, he's not a longterm part of this club. I'd rather take gambles - like we did with Villar and Broxton - and see if we can strike some gold. 2017 is the time for such experiments.

Carter is pretty much a known quantity. He will find a home - no problem - and on a team that fits his talents.

I wish the man success.

Reason they didn't do it sooner? Protect another rule 5 eligible player? That's my only question. Stearns doesn't want these Joey Meyer, Rob Deer, Mark aBrouhard type guys. Carter served the purpose cheaply for a year, obviously couldn't trade him at the deadline last season, move on.

With young OFs starting to come up during this year, it makes sense to move the defensively inept Santana to 1B.

Play Perez or someone in RF for a few weeks until Brinson can be brought up to play CF and move Broxton to RF

I have no issues with this move. Carter isn't worth 8M and nobody will trade for him at that price. We got good enough production from 2.5M and you move on now. I'm a fan of Cooper but don't think he's ready to start the year. Winter Meetings should be a blast for us.

Trade Braun and Thornburg to Dodgers and bring back Bellinger + bunch of other talent
