nick franklin designated for assignment to make room for the return on jonathan villar from the 10-day disabled list. the brewers have 7 days to trade, release or try to outright franklin to the minor leagues. franklin has never been outrighted before, so if he goes unclaimed, he cannot refuse the minor league assignment.

the roster is at 39.

after spending seven days optioned to the minor leagues in 2017, the brewers outrighted michael blazek. today, the club selected his contract and added him to the 25-man roster. blazek can still be optioned this year, and if he spends less than 13 days optioned for the remainder of the 2017 season, he will enter 2018 with one minor league option remaining.

the 40-man roster is full.

of interest: since the 2016-2017 offseason, the brewers have outrighted three players to the minor leagues, only to bring them back for at least one stint on the 25-man roster.

david goforth was outrighted in december 2016, brought up in april, and then outrighted again.

rob scahill was outrighted in february, brought up in may, outrighted again in june, and brought up at the end of june.

michael blazek was outrighted in april and brought up in july.

i'm trying to remember the last season when so many outrighted players were given a second (or third) chance. any stabs at it?

rob scahill designated for assignment to make room for the return on wily peralta from the 10-day disabled list.

this is the third time in 2017 that rob scahill has been designated for assignment by the brewers. he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment if the brewers try to outright him for the third time this year to the minor leagues.

the roster stands at 39.

in a swap for players on 40-man rosters, the brewers trade ryan cordell for anthony swarzak. swarzak is out of minor league options and will be eligible for free agency after this season. a corresponding move will need to be made on the 25-man roster to accommodate swarzak (likely before tomorrow's game, as that is when swarzak is expected to join the team in washington).

the roster remains at 39.

kirk nieuwenhuis has his contract selected. he is out of minor league options and would have to be outrighted again to be sent to the minor leagues (an assignment that he could refuse).

the roster remains at 39.

wei-chung wang has his contract selected. junior guerra optioned to colorado springs.

guerra has one minor league option remaining, but if he spends less than 20 days optioned, it won't be burned.

wang has two minor league options remaining, but likewise, if he spends less than 20 days optioned from this day forward, it won't be burned.

with september roster expansion looming, the brewers could very well find a way to not burn either player's option.

the 40-man roster is full.

jeremy jeffress acquired via a trade for a minor league player. kirk nieuwenhuis designated for assignment.

jeffress is out of minor league options, and is under team control through 2019.

the brewers have seven days to trade, release or outright nieuwenhuis to the minor leagues.

keon broxton is eligible for recall from colorado springs if the brewers aren't able to activate jeffress by tomorrow night's game. jeffress is in texas today, so it will be more convenient for him to pack up his belongings.

the 40-man roster remains full.

Josh said JJ will be in uniform tomorrow. Pretty safe bet that when they need a starter on Thursday they send out Espino and activate Garza or call up Woodruff, then when they need the other starter on the 5th WCW goes back down.

Interesting to note that ESPN.com has Woodruff listed as the starter for Thursday and Garza for Saturday. We'll see how accurate that is.

I noticed the comments above on Feliz and I have to say there was a real reason to think something might have changed. When he was good he threw 96 and then his velocity dipped down into the 93 range. In 2016 he was back up at 96 and posted decent numbers including a huge spike in strike outs. In spring training he again was throwing 96 with the Brewers. This wasn't some awful risk taken with nothing backing it up, it was a smart risk that just didn't work out.

It is interesting to note that Woodruff probably has no innings limit the rest of this season. He can go something like 90 innings more and he shouldn't need more than that to finish the season. If he does get the call it could be for good if he performs.

Not sure if there's anything to it but I just came from the Sky Sox / 51s game and never saw Woodruff or Broxton. I was there well before the game and neither was out on the field at any point before or during the game while I was there. And I sat front row right by the Brewers on field bullpen and dugout. Also of note Brett Phillips made a point to come out of the dugout and give my 6 year old a ball completely unsolicited. Pretty cool gesture. Phillips impressed with both the bat and the glove. Jungman didn't impress in his start.

with the trade for neil walker, room needed to be made on the 40-man roster. michael blazek was designated for assignment to open up a spot for walker on the 40-man. brent suter was placed on the 10-day disabled list to make room on the 25-man roster.

blazek was about to burn his final minor league option, as he was approaching 20 days optioned. the brewers have seven days to try to trade, release or outright blazek to the minors. if blazek goes unclaimed, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent.

the 40-man roster remains full.

A guy they'll need to create a spot for in September is Nick Ramirez. Kind of surprised he hasn't gotten a shot by now as the need for LH relievers is pretty obvious. To get one who could bat for himself makes even more sense as a bullpen savor in blowouts.

While he is doing very well in AA, he's almost 3 years older than the competition and it's his first year pitching pro ball. I could see him next season if he's still on this path but in two weeks might be jumping the gun a bit.

That being said, Espino and Houser have no business on the 40 so if they wanted to move on from them and add a lefty, I'd be okay with it.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Lets see how he performs in low leverage situations. He can go multiple innings by hitting for himself too. He could also be tried for against one lefty bat in key situations. He's a minor league FA after this year if not added to roster. Why not give him a look? It's pretty impressive to start your pro career as a pitcher at AA and perform as well as he has.

aaron brooks waiver claim is official. he has been optioned to colorado springs and will enter 2018 spring training with no minor league options remaining.

to make room on the 40-man roster, paolo espino was designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade, release or try to outright him to the minor leagues. if espino is claimed by another club, he can be optioned by the claiming club and would enter 2018 spring training with two minor league options.

the 40-man remains full.
