lets say we activate topa and dfa some other player. is that other player automatically a free agent? do the brewers retain control? is it different if the player has a certain amount of service time or a certain type of contract?

It works basically the same for the rest of the year as it does right now, but if a player is DFA'd, teams can no longer work out a trade, they would just have to claim the player. If the player is claimed before end of August, they are eligible for the team's playoff roster. If the player isn't claimed, they can be outrighted to the minors, or if the player has been outrighted before, they could opt for free agency instead and I assume they could sign with another team at that point and be eligible for the postseason as long as they sign by end of August.

 

I think players on minor league deals could still be traded in August, so you could potentially see some veterans that are currently in the minor leagues get traded in August and then added to the 40-man/active roster, but I assume that would be pretty rare and inconsequential.
