Can those three remain on the COVID-19 list indefinitely? Or is there a limit to how long someone is on the list? I'm thinking of the situation where someone opts out of playing for the year. Is that a legit COVID-19 list usage?

yes, indefinitely--until the player has two consecutive negative tests, but then also, presumably, has had time to undergo the equivalent of a minor league rehab assignment before being activated.

that removes the player from the 60-man pool. once you're removed from the 60-man pool of your own club, you can't return to it.

ok, thanks for clarifying that. COVID-19 is for the illness, not the opt out.

I was curious if one of these three might have actually opted out without announcing it. Lauer is back pitching and was never sick, so that is good news. But that concerns me about the others that they might actually be sick.

technically, these three players have been recalled from the minor leagues for the 30-man roster: j.p. feyereisen, bobby wahl and eric yardley.

unless we hear otherwise, it's my understanding that the clocks on optional assignments for these players starts tomorrow, and presumably, each will burn an option if spending more than 20 days on the 40-man roster while at alternate camp in grand chute:

david freitas (could burn final option in 2020)

ryon healy (could burn first option in 2020)

mark mathias (could burn first option in 2020)

jacob nottingham (could burn final option in 2020)

corey ray (could burn first option in 2020)

ronny rodriguez (could burn second option in 2020)

trey supak (could burn second option in 2020)

tyrone taylor (could burn second option in 2020)

angel perdomo was optioned in march, but because he's on a major league injured list to start the season, he is currently accruing major league service time, and from my understanding, not serving out his optional assignment like the others listed above. presumably, at some point, the club will have to place him on a minor league rehab assignment once he's cleared from the covid-19 injured list and then decide to recall him, option him, or designate him for assignment.

i was incorrect. even though perdomo is on a major league injured list, he was placed on it during an optional assignment.

thus, he is earning the minor league portion of his split contract, he is not earning major league service time, and the clock is ticking in burning his first option.

now we know why clubs made a rush to option a bunch a players before the transactions freeze in march, in case they were rendered inactive because of covid-19. (the brewers trimmed their active roster to 29 players in march.)

mike morin added to the 40-man roster and 30-man roster.

the roster is at 40, with three players on the special covid-19 injured list.

mike morin has been designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade, release or try to outright morin to the alternate training site in grand chute.

eric lauer has been activated from the special covid-19 injured list.

the roster is at 40, with two players on the special covid-19 injured list.

luis urias is activated from the special covid-19 injured list, adding him back to the 40-man roster.

logan morrison is designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade him, release him or try to outright him to the minors (he has enough service time to refuse the outright assignment to the alternate training site in grand chute if no other team claims him).

the roster is at 39, with one player on the special covid-19 injured list.

drew rasmussen has his contract selected and is added to the 40-man roster. he has three minor league options remaining.

angel perdomo is activated from the special covid-19 injured list, added back to the player pool and the 40-man roster. he may be on the cusp of having just burned his first option.

eric lauer optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute. he entered 2020 with three options.

ray black is transferred to the 45-day injured list, removing him from the 40-man.

brock holt has been designated for assigment. holt has never been outrighted before, and has one minor league option remaining, but has enough service time to refuse any minor league assignment.

the brewers have seven days to trade or try to outright holt to the alternate training site in grand chute, or release him.

jace peterson had his contract selected from the alternate training site. he has no minor league options remaining, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

the roster is at 40, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.

justin grimm has been designated for assignment in order to return to a 28-man roster after yesterday's doubleheader.

the brewers have seven days to try to trade or have grimm accept an outright assignment to the alternate training site if he clears outright waivers, or release him. grimm has the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent.

the roster is at 39, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.

trey supak recalled; he had already burned his second option.

phil bickford has contract selected from the alternate training site in grand chute; he will make his 40-man roster debut with three options.

the roster is at 40, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.

also of note: trey supak was sent on optional assignment today to the alternate training site. i'm hard pressed to remember the last time a brewer was optioned in september.

daniel vogelbach claimed off waivers from toronto. he is out of options, but has never been outrighted to the minor leagues.

justin smoak designated for assignment. the club has seven days to trade or release smoak, or attempt to outright him to the alternate training site. he has enough service time to refuse the outright assignment to grand chute and become a free agent.

brandon woodruff reinstated from the paternity list, and phil bickford is optioned to the alternate training site. if bickford spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his first option.

the brewers have now sent two players on optional assignment in september. the last time the club optioned a player in september was in 2015, but it was a waiver claim (daniel fields), whom they optioned to a club whose season had already finished. prior to that, it was another waiver claim in september 2013 (jose de la torra), but he was optioned to rookie helena. i haven't researched any earlier than 2013.

the roster remains at 40, with no players on the special covid-19 injured list.

justin topa was optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute when jedd gyorko was activated from the bereavement list. he becomes the third player sent on optional assignment in september. if topa spends at least 20 days optioned, he will burn his first option.

brewers media guides started listing transactions of the previous season/offseason in 2000 (when they started being much thicker with much more content). no players were sent on optional assignment in the month of september from 1999 - 2012. this isn't surprising, considering that active rosters could expand to 40 in september.

billy mckinney claimed off waivers from the blue jays and optioned to the alternate training site in grand chute.

ray black has been activated from the 45-day injured list. to make room for him on the active roster, j.p. feyereisen was optioned to the ats in grand chute.

to make room on the 40-man roster for black and mckinney, the brewers designated ronny rodriguez and trey supak for assignment.

mckinney will enter 2021 spring training with no minor league options remaining. he has already burned his third option this year.

unless recalled to replace an injured player, feyereisen will burn his first option on wednesday.

the club has seven days to try to pass rodriguez and supak through outright waivers, trade, or release them. if either player clears outright waivers, each will be forced to accept the minor league assignment.

black is out of options.

the 40-man roster is at capacity.

it's the day after the conclusion of the world series. brett anderson is a free agent. the brewers have an exclusive five-day window to negotiate a new deal with anderson.

the roster is at 39 players, with lorenzo cain still on the restricted list.

presumably, cain would have to be reinstated from the restricted list at the same time as players who were placed on the 60-day injured list (45-day injured list in 2020) are added back to the roster. i believe that is also within five days of the world series concluding.

jedd gyorko and eric sogard had their club options declined, and are now free agents.

ryon healy cleared outright waivers and has been removed from the 40-man roster. healy reserves the right to become a free agent, or he can accept an assignment in the brewers' minor league system.

the roster is at 35, with lorenzo cain on the restricted list.
