...and another spot on the 40 will need to be cleared if Grisham is indeed coming to the majors. I would have to think Wilkerson unless they shutdown a pitcher for the year or bump one of the outfielders (Taylor or Stokes). Maybe they are just waiting to announce until Wilkerson gets his start done tonight?

trent grisham has his contract selected from class aaa san antonio. he has three minor league options.

jacob barnes, who was on an optional assignment with class aaa san antonio, has been designated for assignment.

the brewers have seven days to try release or outright barnes to the minors. if barnes clears outright waivers, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment. if barnes is claimed, he is placed on the claiming team's 40-man roster and is either recalled or optioned by the claiming team.

barnes will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining, but can be optioned in 2019 if another club claims him.

the 40-man roster is at capacity.

jay jackson spent only two days optioned to the minor leagues before being designated for assignment (which immediately removed him from the 40-man roster). if he spends another 18 days in the minor leagues while on the 40-man roster, he will burn his first option.

bringing this forward as jay jackson was optioned today. barring replacing an injured player, jackson will be required to be optioned for at least 10 days, so a prompt recall may keep him from burning his first option.

the brewers attempted to outright jacob barnes and donnie hart to the minor leagues. neither player cleared waivers. barnes has claimed by kansas city and optioned. donnie hart was claimed by the new york mets and optioned.

And both players are out of options after this year, meaning nothing was lost. If either guy would have made the 25 man roster out of Spring Training next year Stearns would have had the worst offseason in the history of GMs.

to make room on the 40-man roster, jimmy nelson was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

burch smith has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to outright or release smith from the organization.

if another team claims smith, he can be optioned, but will be out of options in 2020. if another team does not claim him, smith reserves the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent--voiding his contract.

hernan perez has his contract selected for the second time by the brewers. perez is out of minor league options.

the 40-man roster is full.

cory spangenberg has his contract selected from class aaa san antonio and is added to the active roster. ben gamel has been optioned to san antonio. if gamel spends less than 20 days optioned, he will not burn his 2019 option. gamel must spend at least 10 days optioned, unless replacing an injured player.

spangenberg will enter 2020 spring training with no minor league options remaining.

to make room on the 40-man roster, joulys chacin was designated for assignment. the club has seven days to release chacin or try to outright him to the minor leagues. chacin has enough service time to refuse the minor league assignment if he goes unclaimed and can become a free agent.

the 40-man roster remains at capacity.

six player moves yesterday to remove three players and replace them with three players.

tyler austin has his contract selected. he is out of minor league options and has accepted an outright assignment to the minor leagues more than once. he reserves the right to become a free agent if his club tries to send him to the minors after going unclaimed.

jimmy nelson and brent suter both activated from the 60-day injured list.

jeremy jeffress, troy stokes, jr. and aaron wilkerson all designated for assignment. the club has seven days to try to outright stokes or wilkerson to the minors or release them, and seven days to put jeffress on outright waivers or release him. if jeffress goes unclaimed, he can become a free agent.

the 40-man roster remains at capacity.

I think Albers is definitely gone so that's one open spot. They can remove Freitas-Saladino-Austin and that's 4 spots. Plus Faria and Black are out of options but on the 40-man roster. Besides Knebel and Wahl they also have rule 5 guys: Ray-Brown-Erceg-Fryereisan-Webb to make decisions on early next year.

I would think Ray and Feyereisen are the two locks to be protected. Ray since he was their first round pick from a few years back and Feyereisen since they traded for him in September knowing he wouldn’t make an impact in 2019. I don’t think the other three are at risk of being taken in the rule 5 draft.

I was really hoping Spangenberg would be back to be the backup for SS and 2B since his arby number wasn’t too pricey. It’ll be interesting to see what they do there since I don’t think they really have another viable option for SS or 2B outside of a Perez return. But I don’t really think he will be back either...
