2016-2017 Green Bay Packers Thread

Just draft a CB in the 5th round and insert him as a starter, right?

I don't care where they come from as long as they are good, smart players.

Shields started as a WR at Miami, Herb Waters was a WR at Miami but they are trying to convert him to CB. There are a lot of 5'11"-6'1" WRs out there, especially with so many teams running some version of the spread/read-option offense, might as well sign a couple of them as UDFAs and try to convert them to CB.

In the last three years the Packers have lost Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, and Davon House. Find a team with four CBs who are that good.

drafttek.com has a ranking of the draft prospects. There are 4 CBs 27-36 in the rankings.

27: Adoroee Jackson USC

30: Gareon Conley Oh St.

34: Sidney Jones Wash

36: Teez Tabor Florida

All 4 listed at 6' 0" I looked at Conley since he played for Ohio State and other pages listed him 6' 1" or even 6' 2"

One writeup said he does press coverage well and has longer arms and runs with his feet over using hands and grabbing. Comp was Aqib Talib.

If his speed is fast enough I like that aspect. Intercepted Watson in CFB playoff game. Had more Ints and Pass Defenses this year than last.

NFL.com rating 5.93

Then I took a quick look on Sidney Jones who reads as 1st team Pac-10 starter since day 1. Little more physical in press, but doesn't sound like coverage is as tight as Conley's.

Comp is Marcus Peters who seems to maybe have been a teammate.

NFL.com rank 6.5

I hadn't looked at the other 2. ok I read both profiles on NFL.com. Teez Tabor has some personal issues and certainly dropping as a result of that. Jackson reads as athletic future Return Man, who isn't as quality at the CB position sorta underdeveloped/sized I think would describe it better.

Seems to me the safer choice is Conley but the potential choice is Jones.

FWIW NFL's Mock has Jones gone before the Packers pick. Tabor and Conley gone each in 1 mock.

Oddly 2 of the mocks list Jabrill Peppers before the Packers' pick 1 of course to New England as last pick. Which I'd be all for if he fell to the Packers... Hybrid Safety? Yes Please!

I wouldn't mind a DL if he's a better talent than DB. Peppers has been non-commital about coming back go GB. Likely he'll be looking for more playing time somewhere else instead of the part-time work he'd get here. We really have a need for pass-rushers, too.

I don't believe he will take another DL with Clark showing up in games late in the season and post season. Clark and Daniels for the next 3years looks to be a nice front should he continue to improve, and he is younger for the 16 draft class.

i do have that feeling a Pac-12 player comes in that 1st rd pick. Making Jones or Jackson more likely than Conley of my mentions previous post.

Is this a really stupid idea or a good one?

I was watching some college basketball game at a restaurant last night and two players got into a scuffle. Both were given technicals so each team got to shoot free throws and it got me thinking. It seems stupid to me that in football if players get into a fight after a play they're each given a personal foul which offsets negating any sort of penalty for the players actions and making the whole thing pointless. What if in a situation where personal fouls are given to both teams after a play is over each team gets to attempt a contested FG from the 35 yard line. That's a 52 yard field goal. Not a gimme but probably 75-80% success rate in good weather. Sounds stupid on the surface but it's the NFL and they're always for stupid ideas.

That is a completely random out of left field idea.

I certainly wouldn't want that happening, but there is a situation where I think Personal fouls could lead to a FG attempt. I've never liked how a player can essentially maul someone when a team is inside that 10yard line about to score a TD. You know the drill, Personal foul #90 Half the distance to the goal 1st down. So it's under 5yards in a penalty barring if it occurs on 3rd or 4th down it most likely doesn't effect the upcoming outcome.

So maybe at that point, you let a team kick a FG. If they are behind. If they are ahead, the defensive player should just receive an automatic kicked out of the game.

2 occurrences of this by the defensive player results in auto 1 game suspension and non payment of said game. If it happens in week 17 the player's week 17 check is taken away no suspension.

But of course anything like that involves making the game longer, wackier and changes history of the sport. So it's stupid to suggest.

To your idea maybe the 2players involved are removed for the remainder of the quarter is over 7:30 or for the entire next quarter if less. The 4th quarter would be just rest of said game. And that is really why the ideas don't work, because of the 4th quarter.

Looking at WalkerFootball top 100 FAs.

#2 is Eric Berry at Safety Yes to this pay the man because safety isn't as strong as it's talked about.

#7 is TJ Lang so there is agreement on him.

#8 is Melvin Ingram who it says combines Sacks with run stuffing ability...the opposite of what Clay Matthews brings. If not him....

#12 is Trumaine Johnson a cover cornerback. 2015 had 17PDs and 7Ints.

I'd let Tretter enjoy a FA signing elsewhere.

Lacy I'd move on from as well, because weight issues tend to re-emerge.

Cook is a no-brainer.

Hyde could be moved on from if you signed Eric Berry.

Perry and Jones I can agree on but it's not a long term idea.

There's so much money I think it's possible to find a big FA acquisition. 2 with removing Matthews.

Well Chiefs resigned Berry.

Melvin Ingram was Franchised

Trumaine Johnson was Franchised.

That leaves Logan Ryan as the last Secondary piece I'd hope at. Or maybe a Safety still.

But now I'm certainly going to look for a Defensive secondary 1st rd pick if there's one there.

Packers resigned Nick perry for 5 years.

let me put this on the record, i am not a fan of this signing. I know the packers need pass rushers, but i hate giving big money to guys who don't do anything until the last year of their rookie scale contract, more times than not, teams regret this. Call it the Larry Sanders affect.

Classic Packers. Nick Perry is a good football player, but not a difference maker. Next up, secondary problems will be solved 100% by bringing House back.

Wonder how mad Rodgers will be if/when Cook is a Lion instead of a Packer.

if the packers do sign Lang, their cap room will be about gone, which means that the packers will have gone through the offseason without addressing CB / TE / RB. I know the packers need a pass rush and i'll reserve judgement until i see the contract details, but i don't like it.

Status quo in Green Bay...business as usual. Nothing innovative, no attempts to get better, no coaches held accountable, no GM questioned on his drafting....so 10-6 and a 1st round exit is in store next year assuming Rodgers stays healthy.

Depends how Perry and Lang (if they sign him) are structured. Usually they back load the contracts. But next move is probably signing Peppers to a 10 year contract.

Not too mad he is about to get paid big time himself again.

I honestly think the only reason he is even bringing up restructure is because most of the free agent money never gets used anyways so he might as well get paid as a or the top QB in the league. If TT came to him and said here is our plan to sign A, B, and or C. I think Rodgers would be a lot more willing to have a team friendly deal in place to try to win the whole thing each and every year. TT is stuck in his own way on this one. Good thing for that extreme hot streak a few years ago or this would really be a sad way to use one of the best QB's the league has ever seen.
