College Basketball 2016-2017

patrickgpe

Marquette Madness is tonight, so i figured we should get this thread started.

Marquette is debuting new uniforms tonight and it appears that they will have the numbers above Marquette and blue and white striped shorts, honoring past uniforms on the 100th anniversary of the program.

Excited for another year of what should be a solid in state basketball season. More buzz about UW obviously but I'll be interested to see if Marquette improves without Ellenson. The recruiting has been pretty good, lets see if Wojo can turn that into a good season here quick. I think he needs to start producing.

I am very interested to see Van Vliet for UW. 7 footer with outside range so he could be a huge addition to the rotation. Maybe Pritzl as well. Hopefully Hayes fixed his shot and the freshman class from last year took a step this offseason

Regarding Marquette, they are going to have trouble replacing Ellenson, with only two PF /C's on the roster (Heldt and Fischer). The Transfers that are coming in (Rowsey and Reinhardt) will be very interesting to watch and should give Marquette a more 3 point presence.

This is a big year for Wojo, I am not sure how many more seasons he can miss the post season and keep his job. He continues to get top 25 classes but that hasn't translated to much.

UW will be crazy deep. There are 9 guys returning that saw game action last year plus Pritzl and Van Vliet. I don't know how Gard is going to find minutes for everyone. I hope one or more of the sophs redshirts.

In college most teams play a 3-guard offense. You only need one C on the floor. Hauser is listed at 6-7, 225, so he can play the F spot along wit Reinhart (6'6") and Cohen (6'6").

Wojo is still playing with Buzzies recruits; Wojo's first recruiting class will only be sophomores. Buzz left the team with nothing for height; Cohen is the only one from Buzzies last class who stayed, and Buzz took Pierce and Hill with him to VT. Malek Harris also bailed when Buzz left, as did Shayok. Pierce (7') and Harris (6'7") would have provided more frontcourt depth.

PG: Carter/Rowsey

SG1: Wilson/Johnson/Rowsey

SG2: Cheatham/Johnson/Cohen/Anam

SF: Reinhart/Cohen/Hauser

C: Fischer/Heldt

They can go 11 deep, and I think can be really good this year.

Loosing an entire top 20 recruiting class minus cohen sucks and I think it pushed mu back. You are tight about the 3 guards but once Marquette gets into league play they will need someone to get rebounds. 3 years ago, they only had Gardner and otole as bigs and it hurt them

I think Marquette should make a nice run this year. Duane Wilson and JaJuan Johnson made huge progress last year, and I'm pegging both for Blue-like breakout seasons. Cheatham can't really break out since he was one of the best freshmen in the country last year. I really want to see how Rowsey does.

Remember, Nova is always really talented and they basically run a 4-wing offense (3 true guards and a super athletic small forward). Marquette should be fine this year in a very tough conference. I'd love to see Cohen grow as well.

Marquette is 7th in the big east coaches poll.

So the question is whether they will be ranked at all during the season... or even make it to March Madness (top 65).

i think their ceiling this season is a bubble team. Last season they played good enough to make it to the field of 65, but their SOS and RPIs were horrible which kept them out. This season, Wojo has atleast scheduled a tougher non conference schedule. I am concerned about their lack of size, but excited for the prospects of betting shooting from the outside.

I think the Big East could put 5 in the dance, so obviously marquette has to do better than 7th to get in.

While Marquette did lose Ellenson, they were something like the 8th youngest team in DI last season. You have another year of experience for Fischer, Cheatham, Wilson, Johnson, Cohen, Carter, Anam, Heldt, plus the transfers in of Rowsey/Reinhardt and the additions of Hauser/Howard. Teams won't be able to key on Ellenson anymore and you have seven guys plus Hauser who can put up double digit scoring on any night.

Out: Ellensons (19 ppg)

In: Rowsey (19 ppg at UNC-A), Reinhardt (11 ppg at USC), Hauser, Howard

The Ellensons accounted for ~25% of their scoring (19 ppg); 75% of their scoring is back plus those four additions (Rowsey and Reinhardt averaged a combined 30 ppg at their previous schools). I think it is a significant net gain, especially if Rowsey and Renhardt can shoot 38% from 3.

I am flipping excited for Badgers basketball this season! Should be a fun ride.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

At this point of the season Van Vliet and Pritzl are clearly 11 and 12 in the rotation. A little disappointing, but probably expected on both. Neither got in the game until the end, under 3 minutes left in the game. Hopefully they can work their way into the rotation as the season progresses. BK looked good. Arkansas started to play more zone in the second half and Koening made them pay from behind the arc. D'mtrick Trice looked pretty good as the # 2 point guard. A little undersized, but he had a good handle and shot it well. 2 dumb turn overs, but he is a true freshman. Gard didn't have Bo's quick hook either. Iverson's athleticism stood out again. Charles Thomas IV (I guess Charlie is so freshman year) needs to be stronger around the rim. All in all a good first game.

I dunno...to me that just shows how deep the team is. You have a top 100 SG and a 7 footer that can't see the floor? The other 10 guys must be pretty darn good. It's a nice problem to have.

Badgers have been good for a long while, but I don't recall them ever being this deep. They're not as ultra talented at the top as some of the blue chip schools, but as far as just plain quality depth, the Badgers have a lot of it. A Final Four run is definitely doable again.

Marquette with a pretty impressive win over Vandy. Shot 53% from the floor and 42% from 3, even with Reinhardt and Rowsey combining to go 1-9 from 3. Jajuan Johnson with 21 points, 6 steals, Hauser with 14 points and 4-7 from 3 - pretty good first college game.

Prediction: Marquette will be top-10 in the nation in steals.

The difference so far is Marquette has been on the attack. Perhaps it's the personnel or the increased experience, but this team has a different look so far. Instead of waiting for the play to develop, we have guys that can attack and create
