RHP Santos Saldivar was the "spreadsheet signing" last May, if you remember, and Baseball Prospectus followed up with a worthwhile audio podcast. A 1.73 WHIP in his 22 Helena innings and turning 24 in April didn't bode well for 2017, though.

OF Malik Collymore posted strong numbers across the board as a 20-year-old in Helena in 2015, then was jumped past Wisconsin to play in Brevard in 2016, where an unfortunate and somewhat unique overall talent gap in the system forced the Manatee team to be something of a sacrificial lamb in 2016. And as ugly as the .435 OPS (not a misprint) in 192 Brevard AB's was, Collymore's stint in Australia this past winter - boy, there goes all those keystrokes here -- netted him an All-Star nod, and the release of the 21-year-old (22 this April) still comes as a surprise.

IF Chris McFarland's departure is at least partly based on his absence from camp this fall. Diminished opportunities and weaker results in recent years had dimmed what was a more promising early path. McFarland had tweeted about sending out college applications recently.

The release of LHP Clint Terry is going to leave many of us scratching our heads. Listed at 6'3", 210 in the latest media guide, won't turn 25 until June, able to go multiple innings and pitch well against RH batters. And the numbers, those numbers, both raw and deeper peripherals, always strong. Yes, there was a serious elbow strain that sidelined Terry from July 2015 through the end of that season that also seemed to delay the start of his 2016 by a couple of weeks. We were looking forward to seeing him reach AA in his 5th pro season.

Best to you, Stephen Peterson. The non-drafted LHP was entering his 7th season in the system, a fine accomplishment in and of itself. At age 29, it was hoped he'd be a "cup of coffee" story in 2017, at least for me, with our Massachusetts connection and all. When veteran LHP Andy Oliver was signed this offseason, that put a AAA slot that might have otherwise gone to Peterson in jeopardy. Peterson was the rare (only) farmhand who survived being assigned and completing three successive seasons at the high-A level. The "Mayor of Melbourne", if you will, but the Brewers stuck with him until now, though not being part of the epic Biloxi road trip debut team in 2015 must have been such a disappointment at the time. Hoping Peterson and his agent work out something elsewhere going forward.

RHP David Lucroy was entering his age 24 season, his numbers hadn't been especially strong. The backstory there is pretty well known, good luck to Jonathan's brother (that linked picture on his player page shows the resemblance, too).

Pretty surprised to see Collymore get released. Still young and had put up good numbers previously. Even if the outfield is crowded...

Collymore's release was surprising. Even with Clark looking more and more like he's starting in Carolina, he seemed like he had the best case for the fourth outfield spot there along with Ray and Stokes. I was looking forward to hopefully some of the mid-level guys caught up in the prospect status massacre that was last year's Brevard County season (Collymore, Houle, Rijo, Allemand, Cuas, Derby, Hanhold) having bounce-back years this season. Not happening (at least in the Brewers' organization) for Collymore, and a couple of the infielders look to be decidedly on the roster bubble.

Terry's fate was probably sealed when he wasn't promoted at all last season while some of his teammates who put up worse statistics were. It's too bad. Before his injury he was putting up some legitimately intriguing stats.

Player releases: OF Nick Cain, 1B Cody Decker, LHP Mitch Lambson, LHP Cesar Jimenez, 1B Tyrone Perry, RHP Kaleb Earls, & RHP Alex Farina.

Tyrone Perry showing up weighing 300 lbs didn't help his cause.

Surprised about Lambson, he pitched well the last two years.

Once again, we'll let Miller Park Prospects do the heavy lifting on the summary of departures, I may chime in with more during the overnight.

RHP Alex Farina with a classy goodbye...

18-year-old Rafael Brito, a Dominican shortstop (right-handed bat) listed at 6'2", 180, has been signed by the Brewers, as per Brewers.com and MiLB.com player pages.

He's sure to begin with the Dominican Summer League Brewers, and I've come to learn that "Rafael Brito" is about as common a name as "Jim Johnson".

In other words, all we got is the name, vitals, and hometown, meaning we'll look fondly back on this specific post when Brito is inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Brewer in 2042, after a 15-year big league career and the five-year waiting period for election.
