Draft picks sign - Latest: 9th rounder Hereaud in the fold

During today's broadcast, they announced that the Brewers have officially announced the signing of Ryan Braun. If I heard correctly, it was for $2.45 million. Braun is set to work out with the team next Saturday at Miller Park before being assigned to Helena (yes, Helena).

I'm guessing Braun will only spend a month tops at Helena.

All of the early signings are very encouraging, especially since this team will likely have 20 or so DFEs again this year. Good call on Jemile, I bet both he and Hereaud are in the fold within the next week.

From todays game notes at milwaukeebrewers.com Signing: The Brewers announced they had come to terms with right-hander Omar Aguilar, their 30th-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. Aguilar was assigned to rookie Helena.

I don't think many of us expected him to sign, after he went unsigned after being drafted in the 8th round last year, turning down $50K from the Giants before the draft. He had a commitment to Oklahoma. This is a pleasant suprise, he's reportedly a hardthrower, but had a bout with elbow tendinitis in 2005.

Nice story on Braun from today's MJS:

I'd say the issues of him playing (or not playing) 3B has been blown out of proportion a little, probably similar to how Fielder was tabbed as a DH only when we drafted him.

Good news on Aguilar as well. If he turned down $50K, I wonder how much he signed for.

I think it's hilarious that folks think a kid that played SS in college will not be able to play 3B. It'll be a while before he shows whether he can play the hot corner or not (Weeks still is not a "proven" 2B two years later), but to say he cannot is ridiculous.

Great news on 9th round infielder Carlos Hereaud, signed and assigned to Arizona:

The Brewers got a good look at Hereaud in Area Code Games last summer ... According to Baseball America, Hereaud's parents moved their family from Venezuela to get their children a better education, so it may be difficult to sign him away from his University of Houston scholarship. ... "He played shortstop in high school and played some third base and some second base," Zduriencik said. "Carlos, again, is a guy who we think has a chance to be an offensive player, whether he plays third, second or left field. We like the bat. The kid is an athlete and has versatility."

Getting a great player in Carlos. His stats for his Sr year at Elkins were:

.414 AVG/ .814 SLG%/ .559 OBP/ 27 R/ 29 H/ 21 RBI/ 7 2B/ 7 HR/ 57 TB/ 12 K/ 18 BB/ 5 HBP/ 6x7 SB

He was the best player on a bad team (14-13 record) and still put up some good numbers. Since he only played 1 year of varsity, those are pretty much also his career HS stats as well. Regardless, he's a great player and will def. help the Brewers organization.

  • 3 weeks later...

Talked to another player in a different organization and was told the following:

"A player can be put on the restricted list if he refuses assignment to a level."

Basically what I got from my conversation was that say a player is drafted and signs and is told "go to the AZL" the player says "no I think I should be in the Pioneer League" and if they come to an impasse, the player is placed on the Restricted List for x-amount days (umpaid) while the situation is worked out.

Not to say this is what is happening with Hereaud, but just what I was told.
