Draft picks sign - Latest: 9th rounder Hereaud in the fold

From the Brewers MLB site...

Signing on: The Brewers signed 11 of their draft choices from the just-completed First-Year Player Draft, announced director of scouting Jack Zduriencik.

Topping the list of signees is third baseman Matt Gamel, a fourth-round selection from Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla. He'll be assigned to Helena, the Brewers' rookie league team in the Pioneer League.

Milwaukee also signed center fielder Michael Brantley, a seventh-round pick, who is the son of former Major Leaguer and current Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach Mickey Brantley. He'll be assigned to the Brewers' rookie league team in the Arizona League.

A pretty good day for the crew...

3rd rounder Inman is likely the other. He agreed to a deal before the draft. All that was left after the draft was for him to sign the deal.

edit: The article said "topping the list" when referring to Gamel so maybe Inman wasn't the other top 10 signed.

From JSonline... confirming the previous article...

Another in the fold: The Brewers have signed third-round draft pick Will Inman, a right-hander from Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, Va. The selection of Inman was an example of persistence in scouting.

When the velocity on Inman's fastball dipped into the mid 80s (mph) in the summer of 2004 at Virginia's Commonwealth Games, many teams pulled their scouts back. But Inman's fastball was back up in the low 90s this spring as a senior and the Brewers were not going to let him go by in the third round.

"That's the difference between thorough scouting and surface scouting," said Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash. "Our guys kept going back to see him."

The Brewers are expected to move quickly this week to sign top draft pick Ryan Braun, a third baseman for the University of Miami. The Hurricanes were eliminated from the NCAA playoffs Saturday, leaving Braun open for negotiations.

Interesting that they're giving Inman 2nd round money...as a lot of folks speculated, the lack of a 2nd round pick does seem to mean they could be a bit aggressive with some other choices...Garrison in the 10th also got done quickly, which is nice to see. The two guys that might be tough that I'd love to see them sign are Hereaud and Babineau. Little Weeks has a good college offer as well, though I don't think they see him as a tough sign.

From CNNsi...

Milwaukee Brewers - Signed pitchers William Inman and Christopher Jean, outfielder Brendan Katin and third baseman Michael Bell.

Didn't take long for the Miami outfielder to sign...

Do the Brewers have any picks that would be considered a tough sign left?

I know Weeks has a commitment to Miami, but his family's opinion with the Crew is got to be at an all time high at this point. Also, with the Nats signing their pick immediately, I don't think Braun will much of an issue either.

I would also like to thank the many posters (too many to list) that bring the information on the picks (potential and actual). This has definitely helped me gain level of knowledge of our system that I would not have had by just reading Drew and Tom.

Edit: Now that I reread some earlier posts, I see that SoCal is pointing to a pair HS players in the 9th and 13th.

Braun closer to signing

Agent says major issues apparently hammered out

St. Petersburg, Fla - St. Petersburg, Fla. - The Milwaukee Brewers were on the verge of finalizing a deal with first-round draft pick Ryan Braun as negotiations continued Wednesday evening between the sides.

Braun, a third baseman for the University of Miami, was taken by the Brewers with the fifth overall pick of the 2005 draft.

After two days of talks between club scouting director Jack Zduriencik and Braun's agent, Nez Balelo, all of the major issues appeared to be hammered out.

"We're just about there," said Balelo. "The negotiations have been very good. Ryan wants to get out and play."

Though it appeared the sides had an agreement in principle, the cautious Zduriencik did not say the deal was done.

"We've been pretty close," said Zduriencik. "(Balelo) understands where we're at and we understand where he's at. It has been very cordial and professional."

Barring a setback, Braun probably will sign with the club before the week is out. The Brewers will bring him to Milwaukee on their home stand next week to work out with the major league club and be formally introduced to the media.

The Washington Nationals did the Brewers no favors by signing the fourth overall pick, University of Virginia first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, to a $2.975 million deal - more than was anticipated in that slot. The seventh player selected, Long Beach State shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, signed with Colorado for $2.3 million.

Obviously, Braun's deal will fall somewhere between those figures. The Brewers had the fifth pick last year and signed high school right-hander Mark Rogers for $2.2 million.

"The positive thing is the kid wants to play right away," said Zduriencik. "Everything has gone very well."

----------------

I brought this up last week, but Zimmerman signing so quickly for nearly $3 million dollars really hurt the Brewers, similar to how Scott Moore hurt the Brewers in 2002 when he signed quickly for over slot value with the Tigers. In both cases, it will end up costing the Brewers several hundreds of thousands of dollars, money that could have been used to sign a later pick.

Anyway, we all kind of figured Braun would sign quickly, but it's good to hear nonetheless, no matter what you think about the guy.

Anyway, we all kind of figured Braun would sign quickly, but it's good to hear nonetheless, no matter what you think about the guy.

As a "Maybin" guy, I thought I should clarify my position a bit.

I like Braun. If Maybin went 4th and Miwaukee landed Braun, you probably won't have heard a peep from me. I think he's got a good chance to be a good player someday. And because he's a college guy, he'll have a chance sooner than later.

I like him even more after seeing him at 3B. After hearing some of the negative things said about him, I'm very pleased to see he should be able to stick at third and not move to the OF. Not only does Milwaukee get a good player, but they did seem to fill a need.

My only reason for being disapointed by the pick is my "thing" for Maybin. Anytime someone says "Junior Griffey", fairly or unfairly, I see a high average, high OBP, high SLG guy with the potential to be REALLY special. Of course he's just as likely to peak a AAA...

I guess that's a long way of saying that while I like Braun and am happy he's in the organization, I just like Maybin a bit more.

Any chance Maybin goes to college and Milwaukee picks him in three years? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

IIRC, Braun's move to third was not because of shortcoming at shortstop, it was because Miami found that Braun at third and another SS was a better mix for the team than Braun at short and another 3B.

It would be interesting to see him get some work at SS when the Power need to give Escobar a day off.

From MLB.com:

Right-hander Mark James, the team's 14th round pick from Ontario, signed a contract on Thursday night and threw a bullpen session with Brewers pitching coach Mike Maddux on Friday. "I was nervous," said the 17-year-old, who will report on Sunday to Maryvale Baseball Park in Arizona. "Everything was kind of all over the place." He watched Friday's Brewers-Jays game with his father, Carlton.

Nice to see a work visa won't be an issue for the young Canadian.

Also, look for some sort of formal announcement soon on 28th round juco SS Scotty McKnight, who has also reportedly signed.

I noticed tonight on www.rickieweeksjr.com that they've updated it to include that we should keep an eye out for www.jemileweeks.com, which is coming soon.

Maybe I'm reading into this way too much, but I'd like to think that means that he'll be in the fold soon, too. Of course, I guess it wouldn't be odd for a college player to have a website, but Rickie's seems to be a shrine to his endorsements and the same company is going to do Jemile's.

Good to hear that it sounds like Braun is in the fold.

I guess since I ripped the Brewers last year for signing to few draft picks I better give them props for getting so many signed so quick this year. They've already signed more players than last year, and they have a couple of months to add some more. Walkoffhomer has given us good evidence that a Weeks signing could be eminent. That would be a huge bonus. He's small now, but Rickie was the same size coming out of high school. If he matures late like his brother did, the Brewers will have the steal of the draft. He wasn't an 8th rounder on talent, it was signabilty I believe.
