I was big on Zimmerman, but I think I'd rather have Maybin at this point. Either one would be fine with me though.

Is it just me, or does Maybin remind others a lot of Lastings Milledge of the Mets. Both scream 5-tool talent, and the only difference I really see is ther makeup. Milledge fell in the draft due to questions surrounding his character, where as Maybin, as Patrick noted, is highly regarded in that aspect.

Well if I was picking my preference list would be

Upton

Gordon

Maybin

Bruce

Tulo

Zimmerman

I just watched the Bruce video at MLB.com and came away impressed. If we ended up with either of the stud prep outfielders I'd be more than happy. I'm liking how this draft is shaping up as we are going to get a very good player at 5 that fits our system nicely. Can't wait.

Patrick,

I know the draft can be a crapshoot, but based on what you have been hearing, what are the odds that the Brewers will be in a position to take one of the following players:

Upton

Gordon

Zimmerman

Maybin

Everything that I have been hearing indicates that the M's will take Tulo, which would allow the Brewers (most likely) to take either Zimmerman or Maybin. Personally, I would be happy with any of these 4.

Even though Arizona signed Drew I think the D-Backs take Upton. The Royals go cheap and do not select Gordon. Tulo goes third and Zimmerman goes 4th. The Brewers will select...Alex Gordon and if the Royals end up taking Gordon then I would be ecstatic with Maybin.

I would obviously love Gordon, but I think it will be Maybin. I'm normally not that big on "toolsy" types, but if Maybin can be Milledge with more plate discipline, or Griffey as he has been compared to tools-wise, I sure wouldn't complain. His rawness scares me, though.

Jim Powell was kind enough to answer my email this evening during the 7th inning about the draft, and after going through the teams that draft 1-4 and who they are likely to take (along with another nice plug for Brewerfan.net), he made an early prediction that the Brewers would take Ryan Braun. Powell wisely noted that toolsy prep outfielders have a high rate of not panning out, which is an astute point, but such percentages have not affected how Jack Zduriencik drafts before (look no further than Rogers & Jones, or high school players in general).

I think I like everyone that is projected to go at our pick, which is odd for me to say. We don't have to worry too much about the teams ahead of us. If the draft goes as expected, the Brewers should still end up with a pretty good player. If not, we may have the opportunity to take a great player that has fallen.

Braun seems a little too much like Antone Williamson for my tastes. I hope we don't take him. Gordon falling into our laps would be sweet, but it looks like one of Gordon, Maybin or Zimmerman will be available for our pick, and I'd take any one of them over Braun.

Braun seems a little too much like Antone Williamson for my tastes.

I don't see any similarities at all. Williamson was an average athlete, Braun has outstanding athleticism, he was even able to play SS his 1st 2 years of college. Williamson had no speed, Braun has very good speed. Williamson had a line drive stoke with little home run power, Braun has 16 homers to go with a slugging % over 720. Williamson had shoulder problems in college, Braun is healthy. Williamson was allergic to weight rooms, Braun is excellently conditioned and has added good weight since enrolling at Miami.

I agree 100%, X. Patrick can confirm that I jumped on the Braun bandwagon a long time ago... he's an exceptional hitter and I just don't see the hitch in his swing that the scouts talk about.

While I'd prefer Maybin, 1 exciting thing about Braun is he is ready to jump right into A ball, just like Weeks and Gwynn did. Since he has played against better competition, he's possibly better prepared than Weeks was. Braun could also be in AA for 2nd season in 2006, just like the other 2 did.

I see an good-hitting metal bat guy who struggled with wood. Looking at his swing, I think I see the hitch that could be problematic. It was most noticable when he didn't swing at a pitch in the batting cage - he has quite a bit of a elbow flicker out and the back in before he swings, which makes him late getting the bat through the zone. He has quick hands, as he shows on defense, but he has way too much movement at the plate to get away with it effectively at the next level without some pretty big adjustments. He also doesn't loft the ball much from what I've seen of him, and that'll get worse with the wood bat. I wouldn't touch him with the 5th pick after seeing the video.

Can someone tell me why Braun is projected to move from thirdbase to the outfield? If the guy was a good enough infielder to play SS for two years in college, how is his defense not good enough to stay at third?
