Brewers to announce largest-ever capital project at Miller Park (Latest: multimillion dollar concessions project, post 74)

1992casey

The problem with hosting winter events is the fact there is about to be a state of the art downtown arena very soon. Miller Park doesn't make a ton of sense. All the major events one can think of would be better off going to the new Bucks arena.

Plus, the new arena can't host football or soccer.

Neither of these are going to come around often enough to garner a 10+mil investment in my opinion.

At the end of the day, we are just spit-balling ideas.

Football at Miller Park would be pretty cool - I'd assume they've at least explored the option if that is really their goal. No sense moving walls around and upping the heat unless they think they'd be able to secure a bowl game of some kind.

I think it would be cool, I'd probably go check it out just to see it, regardless of who is playing.

It would seem highly unlikely it's for basketball - they'd never be able to compete with the Bucks new arena for those things.

The new Bucks arena will never get a Final Four. I can almost guarantee this is not the announcement. Just heard him mention it once upon a time.

Yup not big enough. They usually hold those in domes so they can pack more sardines in to watch the game.

Outside the box options:

- A giant brewery and tap room attached to the park. We truly would be 'the Brewers'.

- An entirely new park right next to Miller Park that would serve as our AAA field going forward.

- Casino and hotel attached to the stadium.

I was going to mention the AAA stadium in jest. It'll never happen, but that would be awesome and may be the only way we ever get out of the worst AAA situation in the majors.

As to the final idea "casino/hotel attached to the stadium," a casino isn't possible unless he wants to give the stadium to a native American tribe, but finding a way to put a hotel up would be great for out-of-the-area fans. I live about 1-1.5 hours away, so it's tough to make it to weekday night games and still make it to work the next day.

Just move the fence back a bit on Helfaer Park and we're good to go.

The hotel is a great idea, but instead of a casino, it should have an indoor water park to encourage family baseball weekends / mini vacations.

Yah I wish they would do something around the ballpark. A hotel just makes too much sense and put some other action around it(bar etc.). I'd imagine it would get flooded during the season it would be just fine being closed down during the off season. Of course the hotel could probably get year round business.

the casino / hotel won't happen, potowatami is a sponsor of the brewers and is very close to Miller Park anyway.

I like the idea of a brewery, but I doubt the brewers would want to promote excess drinking even more than they do now

I really don't know what the brewers could do, what would be really cool though is something similar to the packers title town district, but i have no idea where you would put it. I am sure the brewers would love to further make Miller Park a year round destination and that would do it. Like other said, i can't see this investment not being a cash cow for them, especially as they try to make money over these few lean years.

I should have put these in blue.

A big drinking place would probably be a bad idea. The AAA park in the parking lot is just silly. And no way the league lets a casino be that closely associated with the club.

I wouldn't be surprised if they restructured a bit of the outfield wall (within the confines they currently have) and maybe even move the bullpens somehow; end goal being to allow more field-level seats like those in right field.

I will take my turn at spit-balling. Having just visited it this past Spring, I am going to guess something along the lines of a scaled down version of Busch Stadium's Ballpark Village which was built just outside the ballpark and opened in 2014. In St. Louis the project was done in conjunction with Fox Sports.

Admittedly the space immediately outside the stadium as well as the stadium's geography in relation to downtown may make this type of a retail complex a bad investment.

EDIT: Another example of a retail development tied into the stadium's property is Gillete Stadium's Patriot Place.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I heard that they are going to redo all the concession stands to make them automated similar to the stand down the RF line on the lower level.

I haven't noticed that stand. How is it different?

They have a touch screen for you to place your order and pay. Then the staff people bring your food. Saves them from having to pay a couple of workers to take your order. Basically it what every fast food joint will look like in 5 years if not sooner.

I used that concession stand in early August, the first day it was used. The employee told me that the brewers were testing it out and would add more depending on well it goes. He did mention that so far it wasn't going too well.

there was basically some touch screens, you pay with a credit card, and slide down and pick up your food and drink.

Personally I didn't see how it served people quicker or how it reduced cost. This was a Tuesday or wednesday evening with a very small attendance and I was the only one in line, so maybe its much more efficient with larger crowds

A lot of the stands are staffed by volunteers working to raise money for their organization so I doubt the savings from concession stand payroll would be slightly more than zero. Also, aren't those workers paid by the company that runs the stands not the Brewers?

The Brewers ultimately pay Delaware North Sportservice to run the stands, and both entities share in the profits. There'd be costs and profits on everyone's part.

Given the volunteer situation, I'd guess that this system is supposed to speed things up. If they're going to expand this, those in charge have likely determined that the setup at the right field stand has accomplished whatever it set out to do.

I'd say that this is highly unlikely to be the "capital" project that Rick S. was talking about, though. My guess is that he's referring to significant remodeling or a major addition to the building or grounds.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Agreed with previous poster that I hope this is something similar to what they have in St. Louis. That area is really excellent and after talking with fans there a couple years ago it seems like they really enjoy having it there.

I see no reason to build parking ramps, since I've never ever had trouble getting parking at Miller Park. I would guess that this is some sort of pre-game experience thing to generate revenue.

I am hoping it is something like the baseball village in St. Louis. It would be great to build up that area around Miller Park and create more of an attraction to the city of Milwaukee than just going to Brewers games.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
