Danny Almonte

He's eligible for the 2006 draft... I haven't heard anything about him in a long time... should he be considered a draft prospect?... will he even be drafted? Anybody know or heard anything about him?

I heard he has an 88-91 mph fastball, good curve, and a good change. He locates them all well. I have also heard that he has been a character issue missing a ton of practices and a few games for no apparent reason. There is one point where a coach is complaining that he follows his own rules, followed by him adamately denying missin g a single game or practice, followed by the coach again saying how many games and practices he has missed. He is currently predicted to be a late pick. Tough kid to draft. He has all the talent in the world, but appears destined to throw it all away.

Almonte is the subject of some bad advice and guidance, and as noted there are reports that he has some character issues. There is one highly respected member over on Perfect Game's message board that has responded in great length to the feature that was on ESPN last night, particularly tearing the coaches of the Florida Bombers a new one for not keeping their players better informed on practice & game times. It sounds as though (I didn't see the interview) the coach of the Bombers (the same team that Jemile Weeks played for this summer) posts updated practice and game times on the team's website, and apparently Almonte doesn't have a computer, or doesn't use one very much. That doesn't mean he's not to blame, but again, given what already happened to the young man, anything he does is going to be under the microscope.

No doubt, he has a live left arm, with a very good fastball/slider combo. I'm sure he's going to be everyone's favorite player to draft in the 10th round or so to take a flyer on from now until next June. Given what is surrounding the young man, I wouldn't touch him unless he can put the issues that are suffocating him right now behind him. He's going to have to step up and put his destiny is his own hand. I'm sure Gammons is hearing that he's a late-round pick because of similar concerns. On talent alone, there is now way a lefty with good heat and a wicked breaking ball slides past the 5th round or so.

My guess is that around the draft it will be kind of like the Clarret situation in the NFL. Except hopefully no one will waste a 3rd round pick on him.

Before you say it's totally different. yeah.. i know it is.. but it's similar in a way.
