Jemile Weeks to sign with Brewers

Some fun info on Weeks, who is playing with the Florida Bombers, most recently at the Perfect Game/WWBA Summer Championship:

www.baseballamerica.com/t...tcobb.html

Bombers middle infielder Jemile Weeks continues to show improvement, and the Brewers have undoubtedly taken notice. Milwaukee drafted the younger brother of their current second baseman, Rickie Weeks, in the eighth round this year. While he remains a work in progress?much like his older brother at the same age before he starred at Southern?Jemile has been impressive this week. He homered, singled and stole a base in two at-bats Thursday and has made all the routine plays up the middle, in part because of a completely different perspective he's taken into the summer.

"It's definitely different," Weeks said. "Coming in here as a junior, all you wanted was to be seen and make a good impression, but now that everything is out of the way, you're so much more relaxed. There is not as much pressure."

Weeks entered the tournament as the only one of the Brewers' first nine picks yet to sign. His performance might be giving the Brewers a little something more to think about before they watch Weeks walk off to Miami.

"They've talked to me on a number of occasions, so nothing is settled," Weeks said of the negotiations. "I've talked to them, I've talked to my college coaches, who are all here watching me play this week . . . so whatever happens, happens."

All indications are that Weeks has decided to play college ball. good luck whereever you go, Jemile

How do you figure? There is still plenty of time to sign, and unless you're referring to something that hasn't been posted here, I can't see how you have jumped to that conclusion by what HAS been posted here.

It was on tv, the statement was something like this, "Rickie's brother, Jemile Weeks , who was recently drafted by the Brewers, has apparently decided to attend college due to the number of scholarships he has been offered. It seems as though he will start out in college like his big brother." It was one of those statements that included a lot of "apparently's," and a few "it seems," so this could have been a statement that came directly from his agent in an attempt to drive up his signing bonus. It was on a Madison news channel, and because no one else seems to have picked up on it, and I haven't heard it from anywhere else, I am starting to doubt its authenticity. I wouldn't get too worried about it yet.

I could have sworn that they were talking about Kyle Eveland there, and that it was right after their Kyle Eveland interview (making it relevant to that).

[ I'm sorry if this is dense...but did Jemile sign or was this sarcastic? ]

We initially had received word a month or two ago that Jemile had decided to sign with the Brewers (not that he HAD signed, but that he had _decided_ to go pro and sign with the club).

I'm not sure if he just hasn't gotten the offer he was expecting or what, but he's not signed with the club at this time.

Brian,

Is it safe to assume that the club is still in negotiations with the younger Weeks and that we just hadn't heard anything either way?

I think it would be very, very wise to bridge whatever gap is remaining and treat him like a higher round pick.

I would assume that's the case... seeing as how he would have to show up for classes at Miami in the not-to-distant future and become ineligible to sign with the Brewers, it's probably at the top of their to-do list.

Since Jemile is still in negotiation, he loses out on valuable instruction time and just playing ball. Does anyone know is he or can he participate in any summer leagues? Watching the game the other night I saw Jemile sitting with his family, I never looked that young at 18! Best of luck to Jemile in whatever decision he makes, hopefully as a Brewer.

  • 2 weeks later...
One week and counting for Jemile to sign or attend Miami. I still say he'll sign. If not, the Brewers may turn their attention to Ryan Babineau, as UCLA's classes don't begin until September 29th (the Pac 10 always starts really late).

This should be fun to watch. I want both guys to sign but if I had to choose between the two I think I may go with Babineau. I liked his scouting report but also really liked him in the High School All-Star game.

There was a blurb in BA about Weeks a while back, making it sound quite uncertain whether he'd sign.

Incidentally,

as UCLA's classes don't begin until September 29th (the Pac 10 always starts really late).

It's not a Pac-10 thing, it's just that UCLA is on quarters. Washington is also on quarters, and starts late, and I think Stanford and Berkely might be as well. However, USC and Arizona State are on semesters and started today.

Babineau would be a nice consolation prize for Weeks. Is it just me, or do the Brewers often pick a few guys committed to late-starting 4-year schools, perhaps as a way to have a plan B in case guys don't sign? Moss and Page were UCLA guys, and I think they had another prep catcher going to Cal (but maybe it was Duke).

yeah, Stanford is on quarters. Santa Clara (my former school) is quarters. Really, much of the west, including Cal schools, is quarters. At the same time, it's almost unheard of in the midwest. Sept 29th is awefully late. We started around Sept 17-19 .

The negotiations still sound split. When and if Weeks signs, it will probably be at the last minute.

And a couple of hundred thousand bucks for an 8th round pick is a big gap.

Thanks for clearing up the school-thing SoCal. I remember looking up another Pac-10 school or so within recent years and remembering the same thing. As DHonks noted, that's unheard of here in the Midwest.

The catcher you're thinking of is Garrett Bussiere now with Cal (and draft eligible in '06). The Duke catcher was Brian Hernandez.
