Official Draft Discussion Thread (Rounds 20-29)

I've seen him pitch twice (maybe three times) and he's a solid reliever... I wouldn't be surprised if he was in Double-A to start the season, unless they plan on converting him into a starter.

The Texas Collegiate League has named Weatherford College baseball player Jake Arrieta the D-Bat Pitcher of the Week for June 7-12.

Arrieta, who is playing for the McKinney Marshals in the wooden bat summer league, pitched 11 scoreless innings in two starts. He issued just six hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts in the two victories. He turned in five scoreless frames with seven Ks on June 8 against Highland Park and fanned eight in six innings on June 12 against Coppell.

Arrieta is an incoming sophomore for the Coyotes and a Plano East graduate. He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 26th round of last week?s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

?We?re excited about his direction,? said Jeff Lightfoot, WC head coach. ?We?re expecting big things from him next year, and I?m looking for him to lead us to a big year in 2006.?

In the 2005 WC season, Arrieta ranked sixth in strikeouts in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference with 63. He went 5-2 allowing just 61 hits over 63 2/3 innings.

Arrieta is the second player with a connection to WC to win a TCL award so far this summer. Former Coyote Chris Walsh of the Weatherford Wranglers won the D-Bat Player of the Week Award for the first week of the season. Walsh played in WC?s inaugural season in 2003, and now plays for Abilene Christian University.

As noted in the Minor League Forum:

Brewer Press Release:

The Brewers agreed to terms with their 21st round selection for the 2005 Free Agent Draft, RHP Justin Stires . . . Stires recently completed his first season at Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, Calif . . . Justin is 6-2 and 190 lbs . . . the signing marks the 22nd of the 49 Brewers draftees from the 2005 Free Agent Draft.

We know virtually nothing about Stires except that he was a teammate of 28th round draft pick infielder Scott McKnight, now at Helena. Unclear as to whether Stires can be expected to pitch this season, or perhaps in fall instructionals at Maryvale.
