Pensacola, the Southern League's first-half winner, lost Wednesday, which hurts the Shuckers, as Pensacola needs to win the second half.

As Biloxi heads to Mississippi for the final five-game series, the Shuckers trail the M-Braves by 1/2 game in the overall standings. So for Biloxi to finish ahead of Mississippi, they need to win the series, that's easy math. But here's why the Shuckers better plan on winning four or even five of these games --

Pensacola (Reds) visits Birmingham (White Sox) for their final series. Birmingham is a miserable 49-86 this summer, including 25-40 in the second half. Pensacola trails Mississippi by 1.5 games (two in the loss column) in the second half.

If Biloxi wins its series 3 games to 2, then Pensacola needs to win its series 4 games to 1.

If Biloxi wins its series 4 games to 1, then Pensacola needs to win its series 3 games to 2.

If Biloxi wins its series 5 games to 0, then Pensacola needs to win two games in their series.

There's actually a similar dynamic going on in the Southern League's North Division, between Montgomery (Rays), Chattanooga (Twins), and first half champs Jackson (Mariners). Wild stuff...

From Chris Mehring's notes:

THE CHASE: There are five games remaining in season for the Rattlers. Peoria and Clinton qualified for a playoff spot in the first half. Cedar Rapids has clinched the top playoff spot in the second half. Beloit, Kane County, and Quad Cities have been eliminated from playoff contention.

TEAM W-L DIV WC

Cedar Rapids 40-25

WISCONSIN 34-31 6.0

Burlington 33-32 7.0 1.0

The Rattlers own the tie-breaker over both Burlington by virtue of winning the season series over both teams. The remaining schedule for each team:

WIS: 2 vs. CR; 3 @BEL

BUR: 2 @CLN; 3 vs. QC

Final: Daytona 10, Brevard County 0

Daytona's two-out scoring seals victory

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

Brevard County Box Score

Their isn't a 10-run rule in professional baseball, but the game was delayed and called (due to rain) in the bottom of the 7th after Daytona had already put 4 runs on the board in the inning (10 for the game) and were still pounding away. Not to belabor the point, but this snippet from the game story make it sink in how bad things have been lately: "It was the 20th loss in 21 games for the Manatees and they fell to 6-40 in the FSL North Division in the second half."

Despite only 6 hits, the Manatees had a pair of multi-hit efforts. Corey Ray was 2-for-3 and Trey York was 2-for-3 with a double. Wendell Rijo also contributed a double and moved his average since joining Brevard County north of the Mendoza line. Cody Ponce threw strikes on 59 of 80 pitches over 5.0 innings, but gave up 9 hits and 6 runs including a home run. On the bright side he did strike out 8 while allowing just 1 walk.

Shuckers drop series opener to Braves, 5-1

Brett Phillips extended his hitting streak to five games with a triple

Tristan Archer struck out five over three innings of relief on Thursday.

Biloxi Boxscore

Luis Ortiz got smacked around and only lasted 2 innings which took him 57 pitches to accomplish. 4 pitchers from the bullpen combined to allow 1 run and strike out 7 over the final 6 innings.

This was a pretty lame effort all the way around, with the Shuckers collecting 2 hits and 5 total base runners in the game, definitely not the kind showing anyone would want in a playoff chase.

Come back and get em tomorrow boys.

Sky Sox End Home Slate With 4-0 Win

Sky Sox finish sweep of New Orleans in final home game.

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Drew Gagnon (5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1BB, 1K) gave up only one hit as the Sky Sox shut out the Zephyrs on Thursday evening in the final game of the year in Colorado Springs. The win allowed the club to climb back to .500 on the year (67-67). All told, Sky Sox pitchers, which included Sam Freeman, Michael Kirkman and Tim Dillard as well as Gagnon, allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out six.

The Sky Sox offense was limited to just five hits, but three of those were back-to-back-to-back in the 2nd, plating two runs. An two-run HR from Garrett Cooper (2-4) in the 8th accounted for the other scoring.

Former Brewer Chris Narveson took the lose for New Orleans.

Cooper’s HR was his fifth on 112 ABs in Colorado. With his AA numbers, it gives him nine on the year, which is a career high for the 25-year old 1B/OF.

Andy Wilkins doubles (20) on a fly ball to left fielder David Lough. Josmil Pinto scores.

Michael Reed grounds out, shortstop J. T. Riddle to first baseman Cole Gillespie.

Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging.

Drew Gagnon called out on strikes.

Wisconsin Wins 4-1 to Lower Magic Number to Two

Yamamoto strikes out 11 in six innings to take over league lead

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Jordan Yamamoto struck out eleven over six scoreless innings and picked up the win for the Rattlers on Thursday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Wisconsin Boxscore

Today's Jordan Yamamoto performance was certainly battleship worthy, he came out on the better end of a very entertaining pitchers dual collecting 11 strike outs against just 3 hits and no walks. Complete. Domination. If not for Scott Grist's throwing error the Rattler pitchers wouldn't have allowed any runs while striking out 15, that's putting the hammer down. I found it interesting that Miguel Sanchez was brought on to record the last out, they must really like him to be put in that spot in this situation.

The T-Rats were actually no hit through 5 which would have been worrisome if not for the pitching performance but got the most out the hits, errors, and hit by pitches to score as many runs as the team had hits.

Thanks to Pensacola's come-from-behind win, this is updated:

Pensacola, the Southern League's first-half winner, lost Wednesday, which hurts the Shuckers, as Pensacola needs to win the second half.

Pensacola (Reds) visits Birmingham (White Sox) for their final series. Birmingham is a miserable 49-86 this summer, including 25-40 in the second half. Pensacola trails Mississippi by 1.5 games (two in the loss column) in the second half.

If Biloxi wins 3 of the next four, then Pensacola needs to win 3 of its next four.

If Biloxi wins the next four games, then Pensacola needs to win 2 of its next four.

Getting tougher, folks...
