Scoreboard watching --

Southern League -- root for Mississippi to lose this afternoon, Pensacola (and of course) Biloxi to win tonight

Midwest League -- If Wisconsin wins out, they're in (they don't have to win out with six to go, but they do control their future over Burlington for now), but go Clinton!

From Sunday's Link Report...

Details later on the Manatees Sunday loss, but the Sea Cows still need to win one of their final seven to avoid an unthinkable 38-100 season.

Well the Sea Cows haven't won a game since this was posted, but tonight's game was CANCELLED and will not be made up! And with that the Manatees avoid losing 100 games in their final season in Brevard County.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Reminds me of the excitement at my school last year. The high school football team hit an all-time low by going 0-11 (I think). Then 2 weeks after the season, it was announced the last opponent used an illegal player, meaning that we finished 1-10. Students were definitely not above winning on a technicality.

If Mother Nature hadn't obliged, the Manatees may have had to employ the techniques of Crash Davis in order to manufacture a rainout before Sunday.

Speaking of Bull Durham, Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh's words are apropos on a night like this:

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Shuckers deal Generals one-hit shutout and take series

Brett Phillips provided the Wednesday's lone runs with a two-run homer in first inning

Brett Phillips blasted his 16th home run and third over his last nine games in the first inning on Wednesday. (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

Angel Ventura with an awesome outing as the season winds down... 6IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 6SO. I could do without the walks but I'll take some improvement. Angel has gone scoreless in 3 of his last 4 outings, but the one game that wasn't a zero was the 8 inning explosion where he was left in to be the sacrificial lamb and gave up 3 HRs. It would be difficult to be more feast or famine than that. The bullpen was stupendous including rehabbing Jacob Barnes, the only blemish was a Preston Gainey walk.

Biloxi collect a total of 5 hits but Tyrone Taylor (2-3,BB) is hitting .345 over his last 10,

Rattlers Gain Ground with 3-2 win over Kernels

Erceg homers for Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Lucas Erceg is greeted by Isan Diaz at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers dugout in the first inning on Wednesday night. Erceg had just hit a two-run homer to put the Rattlers up 3-2. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Wisconsin Boxscore

These games where the Rattlers score all of their runs early and then waste limited opportunities through out the rest of the game are way too stressful, which is a definite sign I'm too invested.

Conor Harber wasn't exceedingly sharp but was effective. Christian Trent gave up the other run, he's yet to go scoreless in WI.

Like Biloxi the Rattlers managed just 5 hits, here Jake Gatewood (2-4,2B) had the only multi hit game, Lucas Erceg's HR will be covered by the game story. 4 of the 5 hits came in the 1st inning, I'd much rather they kept their foot on the gas for the entire game! Trent Clark had another tough day on the bases as well as the field but continues to take walks, his BB rate is fantastic.

Popsicle headache --

Pensacola, the Southern League's first-half winner, lost Wednesday, which hurts the Shuckers, as Pensacola needs to win the second half.

As Biloxi heads to Mississippi for the final five-game series, the Shuckers trail the M-Braves by 1/2 game in the overall standings. So for Biloxi to finish ahead of Mississippi, they need to win the series, that's easy math. But here's why the Shuckers better plan on winning four or even five of these games --

Pensacola (Reds) visits Birmingham (White Sox) for their final series. Birmingham is a miserable 49-86 this summer, including 25-40 in the second half. Pensacola trails Mississippi by 1.5 games (two in the loss column) in the second half.

If Biloxi wins its series 3 games to 2, then Pensacola needs to win its series 4 games to 1.

If Biloxi wins its series 4 games to 1, then Pensacola needs to win its series 3 games to 2.

If Biloxi wins its series 5 games to 0, then Pensacola needs to win two games in their series.

There's actually a similar dynamic going on in the Southern League's North Division, between Montgomery (Rays), Chattanooga (Twins), and first half champs Jackson (Mariners). Wild stuff...
