Tuesday's Southern League Scoreboard -- Go Chattanooga, Pensacola, and (of course) Biloxi

***

All the Midwest League is idle, a night off from scoreboard watching there. Timber Rattlers control their own destiny, but it's tight.

(Biloxi also controls its destiny, but again, super-tight.)

Bad timing for you locals --

So now with a big home series looming this week, the two TV outlets decide they're done with the Wisconsin regular season broadcast schedule...

That's because HS sports are back, but it does suck.

Biloxi Boxscore

Jorge Lopez is just struggling to find last year's rhythm, too many hits, too many walks, too many runs allowed. The best thing you can say is that tonight he gave up singles. I've always like Jorge, for quite a few reasons, but I'm always skeptical of pop up players that greatly out perform the rest of their career in that season. I was fooled before, Hunter Morris and Tyrone Taylor were the last, I want 2 good years before I'm getting exciting about a guy.

Biloxi's lone run came in the 9th, but the Shuckers had 8 hits and plenty of base runners early, they just weren't able to push anything across.

Sky Sox Rout Zephyrs 13-5

Reed drives in five to back strong Wilkerson start.

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Michael Reed (1-3, BB, HR, 5 RBI) hit a grand slam, his HR of the season, to lead the Sky Sox to a win. Josmil Pinto (3-4, 2B, BB), Kyle Wren (3-5, BB), Nate Orf (2-4, 2B), Garin Cecchini (2-5, 3 RBI) and Aaron Wilkerson (2-3, 2 RBI) - yes, the pitcher - all had a multi-hit game.

The Sky Sox pounded out 17 hits and drew seven walks.

Brevard County Completion of Suspended Game Box Score

Brevard County Completion of Suspended Game Log

We covered starter Phil Bickford's 2.0 inning outing in Monday's Link Report, Marcos Diplan pitched all 7.0 innings once the suspended game resumed Tuesday afternoon. Diplan gave up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and struck out 9 batters.

Brevard County only managed 4 hits, but 1 of them was a Corey Ray solo home run, his 5th HR of the season. According to the game story he also made some nice running catches in the field.

Brevard County Regularly Scheduled Game Box Score

Brevard County Regularly Scheduled Game Log

The long rain delay between the makeup game and the regularly scheduled game meant that the Manatees were still playing baseball past midnight.

For the second straight game the Manatees were held to 4 hits. Both Malik Collymore and Jose Cuas had doubles. For Collymore it was only his second extra base hit since June 25th. On the mound Bubba Derby and Jon Olczak combined to cover the 7 inning contest.

Included in the game story are some good action photos including what appears to be an incredible diving catch by Elvis Rubio.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: Missoula 11, Helena 9

PHOTOS: Gilbert Lara and Cooper Hummel at the game summary link.

Unfortunately, the photogenic ones here combined for three of five Helena errors.

Helena Box Score

Despite the game-long sloppiness, all eight runs RHP http://Scott Serigstad surrendered (say that fast) in his three-inning start were earned; Serigstad has a 2.11 WHIP over 38.1 innings -- that's way short of ideal.

Clemson 17th rounder Wes Wilson has been better than solid (.937 OPS), but we really can't judge any three-year college picks until they graduate the Pioneer League, we've been burned so, so often.

19-year-old 2B Franly Mallen's OPS by month -- .837, .690, .570.

Ejections: Helena Brewers Pitching Coach Mark Dewey ejected by HP umpire Steven Hodgins (8th)

Personally, I almost gave up on him prior to last year. But knowing that the was a raw prospect that was going to take some time developing, I think many of us (me at least) expected him to finally put it together and make potential turn into production. So we expected it, saw and said, "Boom there it is!"

But maybe not... I'm still hoping that last year's success got Lopez resting on his laurels too much. And this year functions as a wake-up year for him.

I absolutely agree with you, I used to be in that same boat, wanting so bad for a prospect to succeed that when there is finally success it's so incredibly easy to say, "See!". I think that's just human nature.
