2016-08-30 Cardinals (Wainwright) at Brewers (Peralta), 7:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 2-1, 10 innings]

Heading to the 10th vs. the Cardinals. Anyone here who is not reasonably confident that we end up losing this game?

The Cardinals have blown through their best two relievers. They're down to Bowman, Kiekhefer, Jerome Williams, Socolovich, and...

... Zach Duke and Jonathan Broxton.

Doesn't matter if all they had left was the garbage man. Any Cardinal pitcher > any Brewer hitter.

Chris Carter hitting .167 with RISP. Words can't quite describe how bad that is.

This why RBI is not an irrelevant stat no matter how much the advance stat guys say otherwise. Being clutch is a thing.

He would probably have 200 RBI if he was even the slightest clutch.

2 outs, RISP - .123 AVG

Late & Close - .159 AVG

Career line - .218/.314/.459

Career RISP - .220/.338/.460

He's the same hitter with runners in scoring position as he is every other time. He is no more or less "clutch" or whatever buzz word you want to use.

Considering he's facing better pitchers in Late & Close situation's I think those numbers are right in line with his overall numbers.

I don't really care about his career line because I was looking at this year. I just care how brutally bad he has been this year with the Brewers.

I don't care how good of an idea that Bill and Brian said it was. Sac bunting to get a runner to 3rd with 1 out has not worked out at all for us this year. Like, ever. We always, always follow it with a K or pop out.

When you are on pace to set the all time team strikeout record, it's probably not a good idea to sac bunt to get runners over.

Sac bunting is pretty much the most awful thing in baseball. You've got a rally going, the other pitcher can't throw strikes, you have all 3 of your outs yet, you've got 2 on, and you willingly squash this momentum and spot the other team an out when the tie run is already in scoring position.

And the worst part is you know that they're going to do it and you know what's going to happen after.

I will SAC bunt in that situtation all day long when someone at the bottom of the order is coming up. Maldonado? Yup I am bunting.

Give me one example of when that has worked for us this year late in a game. Just one.

And you don't have to go with Maldonado if you don't want to bunt. Could have called a PH.

The Brewers suck. They don't do much right. They are likely to fail no matter what they do. I don't have time to find the data, but 1 out guy on third is better than no outs and a guy on second. It is valid to say they strike out a lot, but I don't think that means we should let a guy who struggles to hit above the Mendoza line swing away.

Coming into the game the Brewers were hitting .288/.344/.478 with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out. I probably wouldn't have bunted but understand why they did. If a ground ball pitcher like Bowman gets Maldonado to hit a ground ball, it's probably going to be a double play. Of course, he just walked two batters so maybe you make him throw you a strike first and see if he can continue to get pitches in the zone because he hadn't really been close to the zone at that point.
