I feel okay about Braun because Romero, Tulo, and Maybin were all there. Jack Z had a good choice, and he's not famous for making bad ones. I was suspicious of Tulo, and apparently a lot of people were suspicious of Maybin, although I still like his chances. One thing I noticed is that Braun is the oldest of the players selected near the top, so he'll need to move through the system fast. I don't think I'd start him at A+, but I wouldn't be dogmatic about keeping him at one level in each of his first two full seasons.

(The following comment is made with no hard research to back it up.)

I have a couple contacts in the Cape League that I'm trying to get a hold of, but I'm guessing Braun wouldn't be the first kid that didn't hit in that league, but developed into a nice pro.

If he would be, then there's a first time for everything. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Nice to see our 15 min break has streached to 21 already.

The GM's must have gotten exhausted after those 15 seconds of talking during that long 30 minutes of work.

I just hate that we decided to go away from picking the best player available to drafting a need. It appears to me that we went with the guy who would not only fill the need, but fill it as soon as possible. He won't be playing this year in Milwaukee and probably not next, so who knows who else we could have acquired via free agency or trade in the next 2 years to fill that whole instead?

I go back to the NFL draft and the year that Wolf picked for need (Believe it was Edwards, Vinson and Mckenzie) and he said that was the biggest mistake he's made. Ted Thompson preached that philosophy during the draft and so has Mr. Z. TO me, old Doug Melvin got a little too involved in the decision and it may end up costly. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't see this as a classic choice of drafting for need over best player available. Braun was objectively in the range of the Brewers' pick. There are arguments for other guys they could have had, but the only one that really moves me is Maybin. Other guys presented major question marks. I think the folly of drafting for need depends on how far you're reaching. This wasn't much of a reach, if it was a reach at all.
