On the recently-signed Embry-Riddle duo:

Brewers pick 2 Eagles

By SEAN KERNAN

Daytona Beach News-Journal Staff Writer

Last week, pitcher Patrick Ryan and shortstop Kenny Holmberg did their utmost to help Embry-Riddle reach the NAIA World Series championship game.

On Wednesday, the two former Eagles learned they're likely to remain teammates as they begin professional baseball careers with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

Milwaukee selected Ryan and Holmberg in the 19th and 22nd rounds, respectively, of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft. Both players met with Brewers scout Charles Aliano and were signed Wednesday night. They'll travel to Phoenix on Sunday and begin workouts Monday.

"Hopefully we'll get to stick together and play together for the rest of the summer," Holmberg said in a telephone interview from Palm Harbor. "That would be a nice topping after what we did at Embry-Riddle."

The added exposure of playing in back-to-back NAIA World Series in front of additional pro scouts certainly didn't hurt Ryan and Holmberg.

Now Ryan, the highest ERAU draft choice since Doug Bridges was picked by the Angels in the 17th round of the 1998 draft, and Holmberg get to carry the ERAU banner to Arizona and beyond. After a five-day minicamp, Ryan and Holmberg will likely be assigned to the Helena Brewers, a short-season rookie team in the Pioneer League.

Holmberg, 22, had been drafted before. The Toronto Blue Jays -- the organization for which his father, Dennis Holmberg, has been a minor league manager or coach for some 26 years -- drafted him in the 49th round in 2001 after he graduated from Dunedin High School.

But still the thrill of getting selected by a major league organization got to Holmberg on Wednesday.

"What's next? I'm ready for this," said Holmberg, who was drafted as a second baseman. "I'm ready for it all. It's gonna be a fun ride."

Ryan, 22, is certainly glad to be going along for that ride after getting drafted for the first time.

"I've been wanting this for a long, long time," said Ryan, a 6-foot, 200-pound right-hander who went 13-3 with a 1.60 ERA this season. "I went down to (the scout's house) and signed today. It's awesome."

Neither player expected, nor received, much in the way of a signing bonus. That's the reality of professional baseball for college seniors who have no bargaining leverage.

"The biggest bonus is getting a chance to play professional baseball," said Holmberg, who hit .342 with eight homers and 60 RBIs. "You make your money in the big leagues if you're good enough to get there."

The Eagle who had hopes of being the highest draft choice in school history didn't have his name called. Junior pitcher David Timm had let it be known that he wasn't likely to sign unless picked in the first 10 rounds. Teams passed him by in the later rounds because his signing price would have been too high.

"I thought Timm would go the first day (Tuesday)," ERAU head coach Greg Guilliams said. "David had told everyone, the scouts included, if he didn't go in the top 10 rounds, he wasn't going to sign. That's pretty much what Patrick (Ryan) did last year and it worked out good for him."

Neither Stetson, which won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and advanced to an NCAA regional, nor Bethune-Cookman had a player selected in the draft.

  • 4 weeks later...

More info posted today (07/12) on mystery 11th round RHP Brent Allar from Weatherford College in Texas. He has a scholarship to Texas Christian so it looks like he might be a tough sign... the Crew will have to lure him away from the Horned Frogs. He's pitching in the Texas Collegiate League this summer and isn't doing so hot.

EDIT: More information is also available about 26th-rounder Jake Arrieta, Allar's teammate. He, too, has a commitment to TCU but unlike Allar he has been outstanding in the Texas Collegiate League (he started their All-Star Game). It would be great to add him to the system but it looks like he'll be a very tough sign.

Cool New Feature: you can now click on the names of the draftees at the top of this thread to view only the post with their information. If any of the links are broken, please let me know... I think the only bug is with Braun's link, which also includes the first post in the thread. EzBoard made this awfully difficult to accomplish, but I think it should work now... hopefully this is helpful!
