Newest Shuckers give team a late lift

Patrick Magee, Biloxi Sun Herald

Two photos at the link

The Biloxi Shuckers stumbled through some stagnant play early in the second half of the season, but the addition of a handful of players have brought new life to the roster.

Right-handed started starting pitcher Luis Ortiz has been outstanding in his first four starts with the team and outfielder Clint Coulter continues to make an impact each game at the plate. Also, Dustin DeMuth has given the team a lift at first base through 22 games in Biloxi.

Ortiz has made four starts for the Shuckers and has yet to give up an earned run in 17.1 innings with a record of 2-0. He has yet to issue a walk while striking out 11 batters.

Ortiz was acquired this season by the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade that sent catcher Jonathan Lucroy to the Texas Rangers. Ortiz was rated as the top pitching prospect in the Rangers' organization prior to his trade. The Sanger, Calif., native was a first-round selection in the MLB Draft by the Rangers in 2014.

Ortiz split time this year between Single-A and Double-A in the Rangers' organization and his numbers have improved significantly since joining the Shuckers. At Double-A Frisco (Texas), Ortiz was 1-4 with a 4.08 ERA in seven appearances.

The arrival of Coulter and DeMuth was badly needed for a Shuckers team that ranks last in the Southern League with a team batting average of .235.

Coulter continues to be the top bat for the Shuckers, reaching base in each of the last 13 games prior to Tuesday's home game against the Mississippi Braves. He has played in 16 games with the Shuckers and has a .392 batting average. He also has a pair of homers and seven RBIs with 12 runs scored.

Coulter entered the 2016 season as the eighth-best prospect in the Brewers' organization and is showing significant improvement at Double-A. He has was batting .220 in 87 games at Class A Brevard County (FL).

DeMuth is batting .298 at Biloxi since making the jump from Brevard County on July 26. He has yet to homer in Biloxi but has three doubles and a pair of triples.

Demuth, a former Indiana standout, has knocked in five runs and knocked in 11. He was batting .287 with six homers and 43 RBIs for Brevard County prior to his promotion.

Closing strong

Shuckers right-handed reliever Stephen Kohlscheen picked up his 20th save of the season in his 22nd opportunity Monday night in a 2-1 win over the Mississippi Braves.

Shuckers pitchers have combined for a whopping 46 saves this season, including 16 by Jaye Chapman, who is now with the Southern League rival Montgomery Biscuits in the Tampa Bay organization.

Kohlscheen needs just one more save to set the Biloxi record for saves in a season. Damien Magnifico, who made his Major League debut with the Brewers last week, saved 20 games last year.

Kohlscheen, 27, is 2-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 45 appearances this season.

Improvement at the plate

The Shuckers scored 28 runs over the five-game series at Mobile with an average of 5.6 runs a game. The team averaged just 2.4 runs a game over the previous seven games and is averaging 3.4 runs overall.

On the upswing

Shortstop Angel Ortega has at least one hit in five of the last six games and is batting .375 over that stretch with a pair of doubles, a homer and seven RBIs. Ortega is batting .288 in August, raising his batting average from .191 to .223.

Congrats!

Brewers’ pitching prospect Conor Harber of the Timber Rattlers has been named the pitcher of the week in the Midwest League. The 22-year-old went 2-0 last week. He threw seven scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and two walks, and striking out eight. Harber was Milwaukee’s 16th round draft choice last year.

Peoria Rallies to Top Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin can't hold an early 4-1 lead

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well this one stunk, unfortunately this has been a trend of late for this team. In the middle part of the season they would poor it on, here at the end if they score a bunch early then go on a cruise control a bit and the game tends to slip away.

Corbin Burnes was outstanding, just the unearned run, on 1 hit, no walks, and 4 strike outs in his 3 innings.

Only 6 hits for the T-Rats and no one posted a multi hit game.

Jungmann stymies Braves in shutout victory

Taylor Jungmann tossed eight shutout innings in Biloxi's second straight win

Biloxi Boxscore

Well Taylor Jungmann was the most dominant he's been all year, what an excellent performance. Stephen Kohlscheen made the 9th interesting but pulled through to preserve the shutout.

Just nine total hits between the 2 team but Biloxi got the better end with 5. Tyrone Taylor batted 3rd and collected 2 hits, it's been while since he's hit in a run producing spot in the order. Biloxi has won the last 2 games with 8 total hits, that's pretty impressive.

Sky Sox Fall 3-2 In Finale With Express

Brinson hits leadoff homer, but Express score late to win.

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Opportunity knocked, but Colorado Springs couldn’t answer the door. The Sky Sox went 0-8 with runners in scoring position, squandering a solid outing from Aaron Wilkerson on the mound.

Lewis Brinson led off the game with an HR (welcome back, Lewis), but other than a leadoff triple from Eric Young Jr. in the 3rd (Young would score on a grounder), the offense couldn’t capitalize.

Wilkerson threw six innings and gave up two runs (on three hits) while striking out seven and walking none. His one mistake was surrendering a two-run homer to Brett Nichols in the 4th.

Damien Magnifico took the lose, giving up a triple and double in the 8th - along with a run.

Michael Reed and Eric Young Jr. each had two hits.

The Manatees, losers of 16 of 17, and down again tonight (3-0 in the 8th), need to win two games within the final 13 (12 after tonight) in order to avoid 100 losses. They were 37-88 entering tonight.

While the pitching has had their share of struggles this year, the offensive ineptitude has been the most disheartening. With tonight's 3-0 loss the Manatees have now been shutout 21 times this season, almost a quarter of their total loses. While it has been well documented that the offensive environment isn't ideal, this season has seemed especially tough on hitters. Hopefully next year's move can help jumpstart some offensive success.

I wonder what the record is for losses in a season, both by a Brewers affiliate and for any affiliated team.

Final: Clearwater 3, Brevard County 0

Manatees struggles continue against Threashers

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

Brevard County Box Score

The Manatees 13th loss in a row did have at least a couple of redeeming attributes. It has been a tough developmental year for Kodi Medeiros, but tonight he pitched the first 2.0 innings and held Clearwater both hitless and scoreless.

Outside of some trouble in the 4th inning including giving up a 2-run homer, Devin Williams had a solid 6.0 inning outing (4 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 4 K's).

Not much to discuss among the 4 Brevard County singles and the 0-for-8 performance with runners in scoring position. While he was hitless, Corey Ray did walk twice. Would be nice to see David Denson experience some success down the final stretch. So far in the 18 games since being promoted to high-A Denson is just 6-62 (.097).

Final: Great Falls 4, Helena 1

Brewers Offense Silenced Again

Helena Brewers

GREAT FALLS, MT - The Helena Brewers struggles at Centene Stadium continued on Tuesday night. The team managed just four hits and fell to the Great Falls Voyagers by a final score of 4-1.

The Voyagers have now won four of five to begin this series of eight straight games between the North Division rivals.

Great Falls scored a single run in each of the first four innings off Brewers starter Emerson Gibbs (0-2), and despite leaving seven men on base had all the offense they would need.

The Brewers got on the board in the top of the seventh when Ronnie Gideon connected for his 13th home run of the season. The home run put the Brewers first baseman into a tie for the league lead, and it broke an 0-for-15 slump that went back to last Wednesday night.

Aaron Myers pitched the final four innings for Helena, scattering three hits and striking out four. The duo of Gibbs and Myers did not walk a single batter.

Helena returns to Great Falls for one final game at Centene Stadium on Wednesday night. Nattino Diplan will get the start for the Brewers opposite Aron McRee for the Voyagers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.

Helena Box Score

Did not realize Gideon was in a slump. He had been so hot that his overall numbers are still great, except for somewhat worrisome walk and strikeout totals.

A rare night not getting on base for Wes Wilson. Aaron Myers has to be next in line for a bump to Wisconsin, right?
