What could Braun bring from the Dodgers?

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

I think a lot of the angst for clubs with Braun is the four years he is under contract. Teams just seem really reluctant to take on long term deals - especially with older players. There's just too much of a fear that something can go wrong - and Braun's not been the healthiest of guys.

I think this is especially true with National League clubs - as they can't slide a player over to DH like the AL clubs can do.

That's just my thoughts. In the end, it only takes one team to want a player enough to pay the asking price. Perhaps LA will be that team.

It's Dodgers or bust for me. Stearns should be looking at Bellinger plus in terms of prospects. If he doesn't get it, move on and we'll just have Braun as a part of our next winner.

After seeing what Eaton went for, I want Bellinger and De Leon.

Me too, but given age, defense, and contract, Eaton is probably worth more than Braun in trade. That seems crazy to say but after stepping back and looking at it it's probably true.

Because Braun is 28, has good defense, controllable for 5 years, and for an average salary under $10mil yearly right?

Heck regarding WAR Easton had a higher WAR even before factoring in defensive value. Braun's value is no where even near that of Easton's. Not even close.

I'll take Ryan Braun any day, all day on my team over Adam Eaton. And that's not to knock Eaton, he's just not in the same class of a ballplayer.

You can have your opinion. Baseball GMs would disagree though.

The Brewers can afford to wait on a Braun deal. They aren't contending and have a very small payroll even with Braun. No need to dump him until the right package comes along.

Except they kind of can't, because in a few months he'll have full 10/5 rights and will be able to veto any trade. It's not the best situation for the Brewers to be in. I'm of the viewpoint that they need to trade him this off-season (and will likely not get as much as we're hoping) because they don't want to be paying a likely oft-injured, declining Braun 20 mil in his ages 36 and 37 seasons.

I forgot about the 10/5. Good point.

I'd rather trade him too, especially seeing what Eaton returned.

I agree. In the next two years, Braun is more valuable to a team like the Nationals. Eaton won't even be playing RF, where much of his excessive WAR came from.

Let's face it, we all loved Gomez, but was he really a MVP caliber player in reality, despite what his WAR said? Defense seems to be inefficiently calculated in WAR.

IF Eaton was worth that, what is McCutcheon or Braun worth? Even if it is 80% that haul, trade him now.

Not really part of the argument(which had to do with WAR), but I have already said Braun (probably) has an edge offensively. Honestly though moving forward I don't know how much I would bet on the aging injury prone Braun over a player in his prime. However that edge is not all that large and is erased quite quickly once defense is accounted for. Adam Eaton is arguably already better than Braun. Add in everything else and you realize why Eaton just brought a haul and the Brewers would have to eat money just to move Braun.

Braun is a better offensive player than Eaton and I don't have any idea how this is a discussion.

Contract is a discussion. Age is a discussion. Defense is a discussion. Offense isn't. Not even close.

I actually wasn't using it to say Eaton was better offensively. I used it to show Braun's one plus side isn't a huge plus over Eaton. Then when you take all the other things into consideration(all of which Eaton is much more superior in) he is the obvious choice.

I did question who was better offensively in the future, but that is only because Braun is very unpredictable moving forward and could decline. Eaton on the other hand is 28 and has put up a consistent 4+ oWAR three years straight so I would expect that at minimum going forward.

Plush, don't you know that baseball players only play on offense? Defense, age, contract, etc is all irrelevant. Everybody knows this. Get with the program (I hope my sarcasm is pretty obvious)

I honestly feel this argument has nothing to do with numbers and more the fact it is Adam Eaton(an AL player no one here watches) vs. Ryan Braun (golden boy with name recognition).

Because honestly trying to argue Ryan Braun is a better player moving forward seems to be a really weak argument. Also to even hint Ryan Braun has a sliver of the value Eaton has is really pushing it.

seems you don't believe that Braun will be moved for a nice haul but everyone has their opinion

If there was a nice haul on the table, he'd be gone by now.

That said, there's still plenty of time and every team's situation is fluid.

Stearns is right to hold on and not rush into a bad deal, though. I'd say if McCutcheon or any other significant outfielder goes to LA first, Braun probably doesn't go anywhere until he has 10/5.

With the trade rights Braun has he is going nowhere. The Dodgers thought they could salary dump McCarthy and dump Puig on the Crew in July. Kind of a Ha Ha, piss on the little guys from L.A. brass.

Puig put on his Big Boy pants and now the Dodgers want to keep him. Indian Givers if you ask me.

Braun will be in LF next year. Braun wants to be in Milwaukee, L.A. or Miami. He truly likes Milwaukee, which is odd for a big city guy.

i agree no need to rush on moving braun

That's the problem. It is a rush. You don't move Braun before the regular season he is stuck with you now matter what. The Brewers lose all power because you no longer have competition competing for him. And what good is having a player bat .330 40 bombs and 100 RBI's (which I doubt will even happen but let's say it does). The Brewers are not going to the playoffs in 2017 or 18. It's like the millionaire going down on the Titanic. Sure he has a million dollars but it isn't going to keep the Titanic afloat.
