I've been very fortunate to have Nolan Arenado on my Fantasy teams each of the last 2 seasons. I decided to look when he was drafted. Round 2 pick #59 of 2009. Ouch. The Angels who got Trout that fateful comp, also grabbed Tyler Skaggs and Garret Richards. Missed on Tyler Kehrer with the 49th pick. Had they gotten Arenado? Or had we gotten Trout and Arenado. :embarrassed :indifferent

BRef is killing Arenado on his Runs above avg with the Bat. 17 total last year and just 13 this year. 74HRs 71 2bs 89/180 BB/Ks and roughly .285avg .560+ Slg Lead all of Baseball in TBs HRs and RBI yet his bat was just +17? Yikes. Kris Bryant was worth +27 runs with a .275avg .488slg 26HRs 31 2bs 77/199 BB/K ratio. Last season alone. Explain why? Every category is worse except BBs and OB. Something that Arenado is far better in this year, yet not eclipsing his +Runs of last season thus far. Bryant has earned 12WAR in the 2 season to Arenado's 10.4 and BRef has Arenado as the better Defender too! Each are young potentially on a way towards HoF. Where 67.5WAR is the avg of 13HoF 3b according to BRef. Arenado at 18.2 today but seems to me if he's every bit better than Bryant he should be around 21 then. Sure he gets to play in Colorado but he hit more HRs on the road last season. and a 23-20 2bs advantage home to road. Sure Singles were much less but 51-37. for last season. It's got quite the difference this year Home to Away but boy did he seem to get jobbed on WAR by BRef for last season. Bryant's Home Away splits last season were dreadful. This year it's better on the road. Just no way to me that Bryant should have had 5.9WAR to Arenado's 5.8 last season. looking at the numbers.

Explain why?

Coors Field, mostly. Also Bryant is at 379/525 OBP/SLG the last two years compared to 337/567 for Arenado. Those 40 extra points of OBP Bryant has are worth far more than the 40 extra points of SLG that Arenado has even before accounting for park factors. Throw the Coors effect in there and that gap widens even further.

Just for further reference:

2015: .960 OPS at home, .835 on the road

2016: 1.065 OPS at home, .771 on the road

Look, I understand Counsell is competitive and wants to win now, but this thing for Nieuwenhuis is ridiculous. Santana was a top 100 prospect last year, we gave up a great player to get him, and he's finally healthy again. We've got just over a month left this season to evaluate him and see how he fits into our future outfield plans. This is a year for EVALUATION. Not a year to do everything possible to scrape out an extra win on our record.

Santana needs to play. For crying out loud, we traded a decent player in the offseason in part to accommodate him.

I generally like Craig Counsell's managerial abilities. However, the Nieuwenhuis thing is making me want to puke. I just don't get it. At all.

Lots of assumptions being made here...

Domingo is 100% healthy.

CC has 100% autonomy filling out the lineup card.

Looks to me like they are platooning him with Kirk since he got back to the bigs. Maybe trying to build confidence against LHP before giving him more regular PT similar to what they did with Keon when he came back up most recently?

Look, the reason Kirk is playing every day lately is probably because we have about 7 days left before the waiver deadline is over and we're looking to trade him, it's the same reason Blaine Boyer and Carlos Torres are getting innings out of the pen. After the deadline, if Kirk is still here and still playing a lot, then I can understand the complaints.

This. People never seem to get this. Boggles my mind. Sanatana will get plenty of PT. He's not going anywhere.

What in the world are other teams going to learn about Nieuwenhuis with another 20 ABs that they don't already know? It's not like whether he goes 7 for his next 20 or 3 for his next 20 is going to affect his value whatsoever. He is who he is and everyone knows it. I'd give him a better chance of getting hurt with regular playing time than doing anything that is going to significantly increase his value.

Also, I would assume by August 23rd that Nieuwenhuis has either cleared waivers or been claimed. I don't see any reason they would have waited til the last week, so I don't see him going anywhere, though I'd like to be wrong.

If he cleared, a trade could still happen. An injury to an OF - think of what happened with Braun last week if it had been worse - and suddenly a team has a need whereas when KN was put on waivers that team had no need.

I can understand the 2016. But 17runs positive last year vs 27runs for Bryant? So you reward BBs more than detrimenting Ks? 89 more Ks than Arenado? Arenado puts the ball way more in play than Bryant did. 6more Sac Flys Productive outs on Arenados part. Just seems beyond wrong a 42HR-130RBI .287BA hitter is worth just 17runs more than avg.

So Scooter fouled the ball, which they missed. And he didn't swing, which they also missed.

Nah, not fouled. Replay on bat checking across half the plate pretty obvious he went.

The ball clearly changed direction before it hit the ground meaning it hit the bat. And the plate is not what determines a swing or not. In fact, there are no written rules for what determines a strike on a check swing.

From Mccalvy

Domingo Santana is healthy, CC said. "We're at a spot now where we have some depth and we have some options, which is great. I like that."

I don't mind CC...but the obsession with Kirk is old. Let Santana play. He might have a future. Kirk doesnt.

Just to clarify, was the great player we gave up Gomez, or Fiers?

Yup I agree...pretty sure he fouled that off. Schroeder was quick to write it off as not a foul like usual so we didn't get more replays. Its not that noticeable because Gennett was pulling the bat back and angled the barrel toward the catcher. To me it looked like the ball hit toward the end of the bat.
