Ortiz was outstanding again tonight. His command is really impressive.

Just to clarify because I'm curious what you mean.

Do you mean control? As in the ability to throw strikes (general ability to hit the strike zone).

Or command? As in the ability to hit specific spots with pitches.

DSL Brewers 7, DSL Rockies 6

The Brewers scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th for a come from behind win. Was there an injury issue with Moises Perez?

DSL Rockies Top of the 1st

Daniel Montano singles on a ground ball to second baseman Edwin Sano.

Defensive Substitution: Javier Castillo replaces first baseman Moises Perez, batting 4th, playing first base.

Maiker Pinto started and did not get out of the 2nd inning. Wilfred Salaman pitched 4 1/3 following him which was the key to this game. While Salaman gave up 2 runs he kept the team in the game with a 1 BB, 5 K outing. Nic Pierre was 1-4 with a 2B and threw out a runner at home. Javier Castillo was 2-4. Bryan Torres was 2-4 and Aaron Familia was 1-3 with a walk and a HR. The Brewers' 8th inning "rally" was a little tainted by poor play from the Rockies:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Jhosua Alcantara replaces Jorge Oviedo.

Javier Castillo grounds out, third baseman Jonatan Mezquita to first baseman Javier Guevara.

Marcos Pinero hit by pitch.

Jesus Lujano hit by pitch. Marcos Pinero to 2nd.

Bryan Torres singles on a line drive to left fielder Jose Grullart. Marcos Pinero scores. Jesus Lujano scores. Bryan Torres scores. Missed catch error by left fielder Jose Grullart. Throwing error by catcher Hidekel Gonzalez.

Aaron Familia walks.

Pitching Change: Esmerlin Perez replaces Jhosua Alcantara.

Bryan Connell called out on strikes.

Luis Manon strikes out swinging.

Sky Sox Shutout 14-0 In Round Rock

Sky Sox held to just three hits in road loss.

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Egad. When you’re on the losing end of a football game-like score - 14-0 - you know it’s ugly.

The Sky Sox managed only three hits - all singles - including two by Andy Wilkens.

After a nice start in AAA, Wei-Chung Wang was pounded by the Express, giving up six run (five earned) in 2.2 innings of work. Sky Sox pitching surrendered 17 hits and three walks in the lose.

Ortiz, Phillips help Shuckers past Braves, 2-1

Luis Ortiz has not allowed an earned run in his four Biloxi starts and 17.1 innings pitched. (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

I agree with the previous assessment in the thread that Luis Ortiz will need to start improving his peripherals, if not this year, next year for certain. He's given up an alarming number of XBHs, especially today, and though he got a pick off which was awesome, his only clean inning was the 4th. He's been living dangerously and while it's been working out this far he's giving up too many baserunners to sustain it.

Stephen Kohlscheen finished it off but made it interesting allowing that triple in the 9th, which ultimately led to a run.

Biloxi managed 2 runs on just 3 hits, Brett Phillips (1-2,2 BB) had a really nice day, his OPS is .706 with just a .228 AVE.

Ortiz Delivers Wisconsin Win In Tenth

Rattlers beat Peoria 8-7 to stay in playoff chase

Walk off wins are always fun! Quite the interesting couple of days for Rattler fans.

Rattler pitchers struck out 12 which was the only positive on that front this evening.

Trent Clark (3-5,2B) and Juan Oritz (3-5) had very good days at the plate notching 3 hits a piece. Jake Gatewood (2-5,2B) and Lucas Erceg (2-4,HR,3B,BB) contributed 2 hits per, but Erceg's day was particularly impressive as well.

Carlos Belonis was ejected by the home plate umpire for arguing his called strike 3 while I wasn't paying attention in the 6th.

Look for Chris' description of Clark's CS of home to end the 2nd in the game story, while this instance wasn't his fault he hasn't been great on the bases by any stretch, after today he has nearly double the CS as he does SB, and that's not including his occasional mental error out there.

Waited on the Rattler Radio postgame but it didn't drop. Will get it in the AM.

Watched a few innings of Luis Ortiz last night. He would pretty consistently blow a fastball right by someone, and then proceed to try and fail hitting the corner with a few pitches. It's possible the organization is having him throw extra sliders to have him work on something, but if they're not, he's throwing too many.

I'm not a big fan of comps, but one of the Shuckars' broadcasters thought Ortiz reminded him of Carlos Zambrano and off hand that seems pretty fair.

Final: Arizona Brewers 11, Arizona Royals 10

Maryvale Box Score

Brewers trailed 9-6 after seven innings, then pushed across five in the 8th, and held on for the win.

Top five in the order did very well, reaching base 15 times, wow. Catcher Payton Henry reached four times and drove in three.

Thanks, that's interesting. I guess if he's having issues hitting his spot with the slider, probably a good idea for him to throw a lot of them. He needs to master that pitch. If he's going to be a MLB starting pitcher, he can't just blow FBs by people all day.

Final: Great Falls 5, Helena 3

Voyagers Hold On for 5-3 Win

Helena Brewers

HELENA, MT - The Great Falls Voyagers built up a 4-0 lead in the first four innings and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Helena Brewers on Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field.

Wuilder Rodriguez (5-3) was uncharacteristically wild, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, two walks and four hit batsmen. The Venezuelan right-hander hit Great Falls first baseman Anthony Villa three separate times, and now leads the Pioneer League with ten hit batters this season.

Rodriguez was relieved by Santos Saldivar, who did not allow an earned run for his fifth straight outing. Juan Diaz pitched the final three frames for the Brewers, striking out three and allowing one single.

Demi Orimoloye got the Brewers on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth, his second home run in as many games. He then scored the second Brewers run, stealing second and coming around on two Voyagers errors.

Helena made it a two run game in the bottom of the eighth, but a perfect ninth inning from Matt Foster kept the Brewers from making it two in a row at home.

The series now shifts back to Great Fall for two games beginning Tuesday night at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

I haven't seen him pitch at all other than highlights, but if he turns out like Zambrano, sign me up. Minus the crazy of course.

Throwing a lot of sliders, at any level, is not ideal for arm health. Hopefully he can dial the amount thrown back and use better quality than quantity on his practice...

His ability to hit where the catcher is setting up. The strike zone was tight and he still found a way to get a ton of weak contact. Ortiz isnt much of a strikeout guy but he gets a ton of awkward swings with weak contact.

Watched it too and I think the Zambrano comp is a little off. I dont think he'll be a big K guy. I did like all the off defensive swings inducing the weak contact. He did seem to get squeezed quite a big. As well as his counterpart Weigel.

Having issued three walks in 5 innings, I'm not sure I would have picked tonight to make that assertion.

The zone was very tight for both parties.

Zambrano's first few years in MLB, he was a 7-8 K/9 guy. IMO that's feasible for Ortiz. Agreed that he might not push the 9 K/9 Zambrano hit a few times. In terms of stuff and body type, I do think they are pretty similar.

He was mostly missing the corners with his fastball, IIRC. Like wichmae said, he was getting squeezed. He might have missed with a changeup once or twice as well, though I do not specifically remember that.

Two points about his slider: First, it's not something he should be throwing for strikes too often. It's a good pitch that's only going to be a swing and miss pitch if he can spot his fastball and change up (much like Wily Peralta can't). The occasional backdoor slider on the corner is fine, but if he's leaving that pitch in the zone it'll be trouble. That's true for almost anyone who throws a slider. Second, as Hammer already mentioned, he should not be throwing that pitch more than necessary. Besides the injury risk, fastball command always has to come first. You can throw slider after slider until the cows come home, but if you're not putting your fastball (or change) where you want it, no one's going to swing at it. Except the bad ones.

I'd even argue he should be throwing more change-ups than sliders at this point. His slider is already pretty good. Mastering the change will push him that next step forward.
