Gatewood Takes One For the Team in Walkoff HBP

Rattlers beat Beloit 3-2 in 10 innings to keep pace in playoff chase

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Jake Gatewood is mobbed by his teammates after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to knock in the winning run. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Wisconsin Boxscore

A walk off HBP is probably the least sexy way for it to go down, but I'll take it. I hope people are taking the time to read Chris' incredibly detailed game stories each day?

Matt Smith has given up runs in both of his appearances so far, though his start today was an improvement over what he did out of the gate. Jordan Yamamoto was fantastic with the exception of a grooved triple in the 10th, I'm sure Chris will cover Jordan's day in detail once the game story drops.

Lucas Erceg (2-3,BB) had the only multi hit game for the Rattlers and he continues to float around the .300 mark (.298).

Hader Masterful In 6-0 Sky Sox Win

Young Jr. drives in four to give southpaw first Triple-A win.

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Boxscore

Josh Hader tossed shutout ball for six innings on Sunday, striking out 12 and walking only one while allowing just two hits. Sam Freeman and Ben Rowen finished out the game as the Sky Sox struck out 18 total batters.

In an interesting twist, Hader struck out Carlos Gomez leading off the 6th inning.

Offensively, Kyle Wren had three hits to bump up his average to .350, while Eric Young Jr. added two hits and drove in four runs. Michael McKerny added a hit and three walks, and Brandon Macias had an HR.

Colorado Springs Game Log

The Sky Sox broke open the game with a big 6th inning:

Col. Springs Top of the 6th

Andy Wilkins called out on strikes.

Michael McKenry walks.

Yadiel Rivera hit by pitch. Michael McKenry to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Jose Valdespina replaces Michael Roth.

Eric Young Jr. doubles (8) on a fly ball to left fielder Carlos Gomez. Michael McKenry scores. Yadiel Rivera scores.

Brandon Macias homers (2) on a fly ball to left field. Eric Young Jr. scores.

Kyle Wren singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Jared Hoying.

Was at T Rat game today. Interesting to say the least.... Clark doubles, Aviles walked, then Diaz got drilled good to load bases then Gatewood got hit to walk in winning run! It was all with 0 outs. Harrison hit ball hard and well today & outside of one awful 3 pitch strikeout where he left runners stranded looking, he looked good! Erceg's first hit was essentially a swinging bunt... Went maybe 12 feet down 3rd baseline but he beat it out on an awful throw which put him on 2nd. Diaz of course barrels the ball. Smoked double off wall & ab before flew out to warning track. Mejia looked terrible offensively. Good arm behind plate though. Nice to see Ortiz go deep with his struggles since call up.

Hader is an animal.... With 6 GS & 31 IPs exactly for both home & away, his numbers are very drastically different. His walks are a little high on the road but outside of that, pretty impressive.

Taylor's four RBI night not enough in loss to BayBears

Shuckers drop series finale at Mobile on Sunday, 11-6

Tyrone Taylor collected a season-high four RBIs in the 11-6 loss at Mobile. (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

Angel Ventura gave up 2 3R HRs, a solo shot, and the other run scored on a wild pitch and a double. Obviously extra base hits are killing Ventura, but he's another guy I thought was promoted too early. After watching him last season I felt he was a year at a level guy, his control needed to be improved and both off speed pitches needed refinement before he hit AA. Even his curve which is his best pitches needs to be plus all the time, not just occasionally flash plus. He was basically run out 100 pitches come hell or high water, I sincerely hope all this aggressive promoting works out in the end. Woodruff has been the pitcher with the most success, but even he's been up and down.

Tyler Spurlin had been pretty solid all year but gave up 3 runs himself in the 8th.

For the 2nd straight day the offense got off but unfortunately Angel Ortega and Jacob Nottingham didn't participate as they both went 0-fer. Nottingham also committed his 14th error, it just wasn't a good day for him.

Nick Ramirez has 13 homers batting just .201.

Final: Tampa 8, Brevard County 3

Early outburst leads Tampa over Manatees

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

***

Brevard County Box Score

Starter Cody Ponce had a forgettable outing lasting just 1.0 inning and allowing 5 runs (4 earned) including a 3-run homer. In that first inning Ponce had a throwing error and gave up 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batter. According to the game story Ponce came on to pitch the 2nd inning, but was pulled from the game after just one pitch to the first batter.

Relievers Clint Terry and Jon Olzcak faired better in combining to allow 3 runs over the final 8.0 innings.

Multi-hit performances from Wendell Rijo (3-for-4, 2B) and Corey Ray (2-for-4). It was Ray's 3rd multi-hit effort in his last 5 games and he also stole his 7th base of the season in 10 attempts.

Great to see Hader post a lights out start worthy of a top of the rotation prospect that he is. A few more close to that and it'll be time, whether it's a start or two in September or early next season. There's hope for this current young core as soon as 2017 if they can get the rotation in order and Hader is certainly one of the the keys.

Hader's only had 3 rough starts out of his 12 at AAA with 2 of those 3 being at home. His overall numbers and 4.79 ERA are bloated solely due to those 3 poor starts. Those other 9 starts his line is 51.1 IP, 34H, 15ER, 20bb, 70K - 2.63 ERA. It's also good to see that his last 6 starts (split equally between home and road) he's posted a line of 34.1 IP, 23H, 11ER, 11bb, 47K with a 2.88 ERA

Needless to say he's been quite impressive for a 22yr old at AAA

Even if Hader becomes the next Chris Sale; unfortunately, still seeing more ? than answers;

Davies-Has he hit a wall or just a bump

Guerra- has the splitter torched his elbow?

Nelson- has regressed in almost every way. His FIP is now over 5.

Peralta- looked like a change man for 2 starts, but back to the same in his last.

Garza- a corpse at this point

Anderson-Regressing to the point of no longer being useful

Suter- I'm not betting on an 85 mph fastball translating to the majors.

Jungmann/Lopez- I’m sure there are scenarios where they become key rotation pieces, but neither seems likely

Wilkerson- Maybe, but I doubt they even try to figure out what they have until mid-2017 when they can get a 40 man spot

Wang- He is showing nice signs, but the realistic upside seems back-of-rotation

Woodruff/Ortiz- Seem like a best case scenario to be in the bigs by mid-2017, but I’d bet on them being key cogs in the next competitive Brewers rotation over any of the others on this list (besides maybe Davies). But realistic development curves put that at 2019 timeframe before they realistically excel in the majors.

Which is why being competitive in 2018 is pretty much a pipe-dream at this point.

You can dig down even further and see Medeiros, D Williams, and Ponce all struggling. Plus Diplan and Peralta are struggling ever since they were brought up to A+. A far cry from this time last year when Hader, Lopez, and Wagner had outstanding AA seasons. We really need to catch a break soon with starting pitching.
