Official Draft Discussion Thread (Rounds 30-50)

Two Canucks with the most recent two picks, and that. The latest, Chris Copot, is a catcher who actually plays for a school in Canada.

EDIT: I knew I recognized that name. Copot was selected by the Brewers in the 2004 draft and was a D&F candidate.

The Brewers just nabbed Dana Eveland's younger brother in the 43rd round. His name is Kyle and he hails from Palmdale HS in California.

Sweet... congrats, Eveland family!

I believe that is the first time that a team has passed on a pick in the history of the draft.

Back when the number of draft rounds were unlimited this used to happen all the time.

Sorry Kat, I meant since the draft went to 50 rounds. My bad.

As DHonks noted, the Brewers stopped drafting after the 42nd round IIRC just a couple of years ago. There seems to be a team or two that stops drafting early each and every year.

I'm amazed by the number of college and junior college players. Without a doubt, it's going to be another heavy DFE year. There don't seem to be too many, if any, players that are perceived to be tough signs, especially on day two. The direction the Brewers have taken towards the draft the past two years, especially this year, is definitely interesting.

And congrats to the Evelands (and Rizzo's) for having another family member join the Brewers family.

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Jay Broughton (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central H.S.) and Alex Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic H.S.) have signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete on the baseball team, according to BSU head coach Greg Beals.

Broughton enters his senior season at Triton Central H.S. as one of the top pitchers in Mid-Hoosier Conference. A three-year letterwinner for Coach Rob Robertson, Broughton has an 18-5 career record and five saves. Over 140 innings of work, he has compiled a 1.45 ERA with 254 strikeouts while walking just 49 batters. At the plate, Broughton has a .364 career batting average with 12 home runs and 54 RBI.

Last season, Broughton compiled an 8-2 overall record with two saves and a 1.23 ERA. He struck out 112 batters while allowing just 23 walks over 57 innings. In addition to his high school playing experience, Broughton plays summer baseball for Roundtripper's Indiana Mustangs.

"We are excited about Jay becoming a Cardinal," said Beals. "He has the potential to become very special during his time here at Ball State. He possesses a fastball up to 90mph and a big time curveball. Jay will make an immediate impact on our pitching staff."

Still trying to find anyything baseball related on our 50th round pick.....he is a big time hockey star and recruit of Notre Dame....I have included a hockey related article on him because at least it shows his competitiveness.....

WATERLOO -- Nobody is more frustrated than Garrett Regan.

Thirty goals in 15 games doesn't cut it in the ultra-competitive United States Hockey League.

It doesn't cut it with any of the Waterloo Black Hawks.

And it certainly doesn't sit well with Regan, who is being counted on to lead a young group of forwards as the Black Hawks attempt to defend their 2003-04 Tier I Junior National Championship.

As much as Waterloo's scoring woes frustrate Regan, a third-year forward from Hastings, Minn., he says it can't become a major issue within the team.

No one person can answer or solve the problem, he adds.

"Of course it is frustrating when the puck is not going in," said Regan. "But we have to keep as positive of an attitude as we can.

"We've just got to move forward, build on the little things we do right and the big things will fall into place."

Regan had little trouble finding the net a year ago for the Black Hawks when he scored 20 goals and assisted on 26 others.

He saved his best hockey when it counted the most -- in the Clark Cup playoffs.

In 12 playoff games, Regan had six goals and five assists. Three of his goals were game-winners.

Regan's play in the playoffs was good enough to open the eyes of several Division I programs, but it hardly mattered when Notre Dame came calling. A life-long Irish supporter, Regan verbally committed prior to the start of the USHL season.

"I like everything about the school and their program," said Regan. "My sister is going there right now. My grandfather and one of my uncles also went to school there. So I've got a little family history there."

The Black Hawks were fortunate to get Regan.

He was drafted out of Hill-Murray High School by the Green Bay Gamblers in 2002. However, the Gamblers wanted Regan to play the entire 2002-03 season in the USHL. Regan wanted to play his senior season at Hill-Murray.

Waterloo head coach P.K. O'Handley, who was impressed by Regan at the USA Hockey Festival in St. Cloud, Minn., during the 2002 summer, was willing to give the 6-foot, 180-pound Regan veteran status.

That meant Regan became a before-and-after player for the Black Hawks, playing 21 games during the 2002-03 season -- some prior to the start of Hill-Murray's season and several after it was over.

"Green Bay tried to talk me into playing the whole year," said Regan. "I was determined to stay, and I'm glad I did.

"We made the championship game, which was an unbelievable, thrilling experience.

"I had always wanted to play for Hill-Murray when I was younger and I was blessed to have that opportunity."

O'Handley says Regan is a leader by example and is a good presence in the Black Hawks' locker room.

"Garrett is a tremendous character guy," said O'Handley. "I think a lot of it is his family. He has a tremendous family.

"We first saw Garrett at the USA Hockey Festival. He was a pretty darn good hockey player, and we felt we probably wouldn't get him unless we gave him veteran status. We're lucky to have him with us.

"He scores goals at big times. I think we are looking for him to be a little more consistent point-scorer throughout the season, which he knows. But he does have the knack to find the net at big times."

Through 14 games this season, Regan has two goals and two assists for the 5-7-2 Black Hawks.

While he would prefer to light the lamp a few more times, he feels it's just a matter of time before both he and his teammates break out.

"We are getting the chances we need," said Regan. "Right now, for some reason, the puck is not going in for us. We're going to work hard and make our own breaks. The harder we work, the luckier we will get.

"That has kind of been our focus nowadays."

Real good stuff on Ryan "True Blue Brew" Crew

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Same field, same result. Eleven years after winning the Southland Conference Tournament at Brown-Stroud Field here, the University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team completed the feat again on Saturday, scoring a 4-1 win over second-seeded Lamar to put the finishing touches on a 4-0 mark in the 2005 BellSouth Conference tournament. The Roadrunners now advance to an NCAA regional for the first time since 1994.

UTSA (27-32), which came all the way back from being 0-11 at one point this year, will find out on Monday where and when it will play in the NCAA regionals. Lamar fell to 38-22.

Senior pitcher Aaron Rodriguez came back after pitching on Wednesday to toss a four-hitter against one of the top hitting clubs in the league. Rodriguez, was named all-tournament, threw exactly 100 pitches and gave just one run in the sixth inning to improve to 8-6 on the season as the Roadrunners scored all four of their runs unearned.

"We've been working five years for this moment," said head coach Sherman Corbett. "I couldn't be prouder of this team. I told them that they would have to do it on the field and that's exactly what they did. We had a lot of people step up and contribute this week."

Meanwhile, at the plate, junior Ryan Crew continued his torrid pace at the plate by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Crew was named the tournament's MVP after hitting 9-for-18 (.500) in the four games. UTSA, which had six hits, also got safeties from Sean Danielson, Chris Lewis, Eric Moreno and Ryan Saltzgaber.

and some more good stuff on the recently signed Crew, as he dominated Stanford pitchers.....

PLANO, Texas - The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team saw its second-ever appearance in an NCAA regional come to an end Saturday against the third-seeded Stanford Cardinal. The Roadrunners dropped a 6-2 decision to the Cardinal, seeing their season end at 27-34.

Junior Ryan Crew led the Roadrunners at the plate for the second day in a row, hitting 2-for-4 on the day. Crew hit 5-for-7 in the regional. Senior Eric Moreno closed his career on a high note, going 2-for-4, while sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber went 2-for-2. Sophomore Michael McKennon ended the year on a good note as well, hitting his third home run.

Sophomore Steven Vasquez was charged with the loss, allowing just four earned runs over the first six innings. Vasquez fell to 4-2 to close the year. Noah Tritz, Caleb Barton and Jason Vecchio finished the game on the mound for UTSA. Matt Leva picked up the win for Stanford to move his record to 5-2. San Antonio native Matt Manship recorded his fourth save. John Mayberry, Jr., led Stanford with a 3-for-4 day, including a three-run homer.

  • 2 months later...

William Pennington is listed as Spencer Pennington on Alabama's site. I guess I spaced out when I saw University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. The University of Alabama is in Tuscaloosa, so it's not that hard digging up info on Pennington:

Alabama Player Profile

Only 36 ABs for Spencer last year, who red-shirted in 2004 after playing football his first two years for the Crimson Tide. If he was injured at all last year, he may have a medical red-shirt which would make him eligible as a DFE candidate.
