Official Draft Discussion Thread (Rounds 30-50)

Recommended Posts

The Brewers targetted Omar Aguilar, a right-hander from Merced College in California, with their 30th round pick.

The Royals, meanwhile, took UW-Oshkosh infielder Jeremy Jirschele.

Congrats to Jeremy!

The hard-throwing right-hander declined to sign with the San Francisco Giants, the team that took him in the eighth round in last year's draft.

Aguilar said the Giants offered him a $50,000 signing bonus, but he's hoping to raise his stock after an injury-plagued 2005 campaign and enter this year's draft with the hopes of being offered more.

Aguilar also signed with Oklahoma this past fall and is confident he will attend despite head coach Larry Cochell resigning midway through the season after using a racial slur in an off-camera interview with ESPN.

"I'm still pretty strong about it," Aguilar said. "If the pitching coach (Fred Corral) ends up leaving, maybe I'll change my mind."

For now, Aguilar is focused on rebuilding his reputation as a hot prospect after elbow tendonitis problems limited him to just 20 1/3 innings pitched this season.

"I've been throwing bullpens at 100 percent, and my fastball is back up to where it used to be," Aguilar said. "I stayed positive, and my arm came back with just a little bit of rest."

Aguilar said he will participate in as many pre-draft workouts as he can to show he is back at full strength, and Pedretti secured a spot for him in the Cape Cod wood bat league this summer.

Although going to Oklahoma and appealing for a chance at coming back to MC remain options, Aguilar is trained on the draft.

"I'm just waiting, seeing what teams call," he said. "So we'll see."

What's the link to that one, molitor fan?

EDIT: I'm gonna take a scheduled break along with the draft folks... I might not be back in time for the 31st pick, but I'll catch up... no worries.

Thanks,

~Bill

Filling in the recent picks:

In round 31, the Brewers took first-baseman Patrick Murray from Marina High School in California. He is the first prep player selected on day two by Milwaukee.

William Pennington was the 32nd round selection. He is a left-fielder for the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.

Finally, the Brewers opted for Puerto Rican Baseball Academy alum Jorge Core in round 33. He looks like a very intriguing pick.

Page's not a top safety prospect? Almost all of the draft sites and scouting services have him listed among the top 100 prospects for next year's draft. He is a good safety prospect. He will probably go on the first day of the NFL draft next year. www.profootballdraft.comhas him listed as the 58th best prospect for next year's draft. They rate him as the second best safety. Sporting News also had him in the top 100. Page won't sign with an MLB team as he has an NFL career ahead of him. I have seen Page ranked anywhere from the second to the fifth best safety available.

Riley Kjeldgaard is also known by the name Brock Kjeldgaard....he is a Canadian that is 6'5 and 192 according to some info from a London, Ontario newspaper....a Canadian high school message board mentioned that he was throwing 85-89 in high school.....he was apparently fairly highly regarded coming out of Canada as a senior...perhaps team Canada strikes again.

Amazingly, the Brewers took the same player in the 36th round this year that they did last year. Stephen Barnes, a right-hander from Lake City CC, must be feeling a little deja vu right about now.

I would think that they would have signed him as a D&F if they were planning on signing him... my guess is that he'll be DFE again this year at Lake City. The Brewers must really like him.

I can't believe how college-heavy this draft is, with basically no HS pitchers in the lower rounds. My instinct is to love this trend, in part because I have stathead tendencies but more because (1) this isn't Jack Z's "pattern," so it has to represent a very thought-out strategy, and (2) did I mention I hate HS pitchers?

This does leave me with one question, though. Does inserting a college-heavy draft in what had been a string of prep-heavy drafts create any danger of a talent bottleneck followed by a shortfall? I know guys develop at uneven rates, so maybe this comes out in the wash, but it is a fairly major clustering of players in age. Actually, I have another question: Does drafting an unusual number of guys who are the same age as a lot of guys whom we drafted the past two years mean the organization isn't thrilled with the results of our last couple of drafts?

Greg.

Good questions, Greg... I'll definitely chime in with my thoughts once the draft is over (too busy at the moment http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ).

Chris Jean's stats are very good... he looks like a steal. I would guess that his velocity is terrible or he throws sidearm or something... otherwise he looks like someone who would have gone closer to round 20 than round 40.

The Crew selected Ryan Crew, a shortstop for UT-San Antonio, in the 40th round.

EDIT: We're in the midst of a ten minute break. Derek Jeter would like to remind you that "if you believe in yourself, you can do it." What happened the last two nights, Captain? Didn't you believe? ;)
