brewers asking price for lu from mets

interesting tidpit out of New York, brewers insisted on Wheeler or Conforto for Lucroy. Personally the package from the Rangers and Indians are much more interesting to me. Conforto is an interesting player but at i do prefer a younger prospect like Brinson.

Really glad to hear that Stearns wasn't willing to settle on d'Arnaud, Nimmo, prospect for Lucroy. Much happier hearing this though I agree, I wouldn't have really been a fan of Wheeler as the centerpiece.

I think he used the Mets as leverage really well.

Wheeler AND Conforto (let alone only one of them) would not be as good as Ortiz and Brinson, based on age and years of control alone. Plus, our guys may have better upside but we will have to see. I realize we also had Jeffress in the Texas deal, but that could have been manipulated with the Mets.

It will be interesting to see how Chang, Meija, Allen, Conforto, and Wheeler will end up doing as compared with Ortiz, Brinson and our third piece. I suspect we will be happy with how it turns out. We still need a top flight catcher, though.

If we had traded Lucroy for Mejia, Chang and Allen, we do not know whether we could have then traded Jeffress for Ortiz (hypothetical). I liked the focus on getting top flight prospects rather than quantity of lessers.

Don't get their continued interest in wheeler at all... Is the guy ever going to pitch again? Comfort is like a pre 2016 power hitting version of Gennett... Can't hit lefties at this point. I wouldn't have made the deal for both let alone one or the other.

I like Conforto a lot but I'm sticking with what I was thinking 2 weeks ago, if the Mets wanted Lucroy they had to start with Amed Rosario AND Dominic Smith and after they added another minor league piece or two then the Brewers could have included a reliever to balance it out.

In strict terms of value I think Brinson + Ortiz + PTBNL would equal Rosario + Smith + Thomas Szapucki...so unless the Mets were willing to give up both their top prospects they were never going to be able to match what other teams were going to put on the table.

I really like Wheeler's upside, but I think I would have been disappointed if the centerpiece of a Lucroy deal was 2 years away from free agency.

And a good portion of his team control will be getting things back together after TJ. It can take a year or so from when most pitchers are okayed to pitch before they're back to their pre-TJ level of success. Therefore, by the time he'd be ready to help us, we'd be trading him away for prospects.

The Mets know they don't want to have him getting back to par in their MLB rotation, so they keep trying to dump him onto the Brewers. I'm glad Melvin was saved from himself when the Mets backed out of the deal, and I'm glad Stearns chose other teams' proposals over the Mets'.

You know the Brewers supposably wanted Wheeler right? So Stearns was saved by the Mets not wanting to add him to a deal. Stearns choose other options because he couldn't get Wheeler.

The linked story, while interesting to see, tells us very little. We don't know if Wheeler or Conforto was supposed to be the centerpiece of the package. This could be one of those situations where the reporter (or the source) highlights names that more fans would know. The story doesn't say whether the Mets considered those guys sticking points. The word "insisted" suggests that was the case, but nothing else tells us more. Stearns' ask, for all we know, could have been Wheeler or Conforto plus two of the Mets' top prospects. We also don't know how serious Stearns ever was about dealing with the Mets, as opposed to just keeping them in the mix to put pressure on the serious suitors.

Met fans are probably thinking Lucroy would look great in one of their uniforms today. Mets have dropped to 2 games under .500 and are 6-12 so far in August. Lately their losses have been lopsided, but 5 of the 6 losses from August 1 to August 10 were decided by 2 runs or less. Jay Bruce hasn't been a positive contributor for them so far, slashing a dismal .176/.253/.294/.547.

Also worth noting that the Met's first basemen are 14th in the NL in OPS (.709). Chris Carter may just be a +0.8 WAR player, but he would have been a pretty good upgrade for the Mets IMO and would have been a nice second piece in a deal.

I'm not crying about the no-deal between the Mets and Brewers because Stearns ended up getting as much out of Texas as what he should have been demanding from the Mets. But man, Mets fans have to be disappointed now. All that pitching and under .500 120+ games into the season. Heads will probably roll there barring a pretty big turnaround.
