Brewers Come From Behind, Win 7-4

Hummel's 8th Inning Blast Leads to Victory

By Craig Durham / Helena Brewers

OREM, UT - With two strikes, two outs and his team trailing by a run in the bottom of the 8th, Cooper Hummel guessed right. He smashed a 1-2 fastball over the wall in right for his first career home run, putting the Helena Brewers ahead 5-4 in a game they would ultimately win 7-4 over the Orem Owlz.

Hummel's homer completed a comeback that began in the 4th, when the Brewers scored the first two of seven unanswered runs.

Orem built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, taking advantage of Nash Walters' wildness, scoring four times on three hits and three walks. The Owlz chased the All-Star from the game after two innings, but the Brewers had an answer waiting in Wuilder Rodriguez (4-1).

The right-hander from Venezuela gave up a leadoff single to David Flair in the 3rd, but did not allow another baserunner in five dazzling innings. He threw just 45 pitches, and faced the minimum 15 batters as he wiped out Flair on a double play ball to end the 3rd.

Blake Fox followed Rodriguez, and tossed a scoreless inning in his pro debut. Colton Cross earned his fourth save of the season, slamming the door shut in the bottom of the 9th.

Hummel got the Brewers on the board with an RBI single in the 4th, and finished the game 3-for-4 with the home run and three RBIs. Ronnie Gideon extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-5 night that featured two doubles. Gilbert Lara and Joantgel Segovia each added a pair of hits for the Brewers who are now 3-3 in the second half of the season.

Saturday night marked the first time since June 21-22 that the Brewers have won back-to-back games on the road.

They will look to make it three in a row on Sunday with Rodrigo Benoit getting the start at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central).

Helena Box Score

H-Crew now 3-3 in the second half...

Officially welcome to pro ball, 23-year-old 10th LHP Blake Fox; only turned 19 last May, but 2015 3rd round RHP Nash Walters reminds us why his All-Star nod was rather puzzling...

19-year-old Venezuelan CF Joantgel Segovia not only has a .406 OBP after two singles here (all but five of his 44 base hits are singles, the rest doubles), but he has more walks, 20, than strikeouts, 13. Good night for Gilbert Lara at the plate, tough in the field...

A-Crew now 3-6 in the 2nd half...

Maryvale Box Score

There are 20 active pitchers on the Maryvale roster, here three RHP's fared well, preventing 11 baserunners from scoring - clean defense behind them helped...

CF Jose Gomez and 2B Trey York continued their strong seasons to lead an attack in which everyone but nine-hole hitter LF Ignacio Otano reached base...

Brevard County Game One Box Score

Earlier the question was asked why Kodi Medeiros only went 1.0 inning, the reason is that after his first inning of work there was a 2 hour and 45 minute rain delay. In his one inning of work Medeiros gave up 1 hit, 2 walks and 1 run which was enough to be tagged with the loss. Pitchers Javi Salas and Clint Terry each went 3.0 innings after the delay, and both had identical lines allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, and 3 strike outs.

The Manatees managed just two hits in the first game which included a triple for Corey Ray (1-for-3, 3B). Ray also had a couple of nice defensive plays including a diving catch as well as a leaping catch at the wall in the 6th inning (photos of both available in the game story).

The Manatees did make one final two-out rally attempt in the bottom of the 7th with a runner reaching third base on an error, but Dustin Houle struck out to end the game.

Brevard County Game Two Box Score

The Manatees bats were quiet throughout the night, just three hits in the late night affair. The big blast was a 3-run home run off the bat of Elvis Rubio (1-for-3, HR).

Brevard County Game Two Game Log

Cody Ponce struck out the first four batters he faced in the game. Over 5.0 innings Ponce gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and struck out 6 batters.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
