Ray's first homer lifts Manatees to victory

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

As usual for a home game there are some excellent photos available within the game story.

Brevard County Box Score

Have a day Corey Ray (2-for-3, 2B, HR, BB) who hit his first professional home run. The performance put Ray oh so close to eclipsing the .600 OPS mark (now at .599). Remember, he is just 125 at-bats into his pro career.

The other multi hit performances came from George Iskenderian (2-for-4). David Denson went 1-for-3 in his Manatees debut.

For the 4th straight outing Marcos Diplan went 5.0 innings. Over those 20 innings he has amassed 18 strike outs which isn't too shabby for 19 year old in High-A. Tonight Diplan gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and recorded struck out 5.

Brevard County Game Log

The Manatees manufactured 3 runs to take a 3-2 lead in the 7th.

David Denson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brian O'Grady. Blake Allemand scores.
Elvis Rubio grounds into a double play, third baseman Gavin LaValley to second baseman Shed Long to first baseman Avain Rachal. David Denson out at 2nd.
    Jose Cuas strikes out swinging.

The big news of the night came after the game when Clint Coulter was informed he was being promoted to the Biloxi Shuckers. That topic is currently being discussed in this thread.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Lewis Brinson continued his exceptional play, adding two hits, driving in a pair of runs and stealing a base.

It sure looked like Brinson had a third hit on an infield single to the SS that he beat out, but was called out. It looked like he was pretty clearly safe and both Brinson and the manager argued the call to no avail.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Ray is going to bust out shortly. He's got like three doubles in his last four games.

Boom

Nice call.

Thanks. Blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Final: Orem 6, Helena 3

Owlz Swoop In for 6-3 Win

Three Home Runs Power Orem

By Craig Durham / Helena Brewers

OREM, UT - The Orem Owlz scored four unanswered runs to wipe out a pair of early Helena Brewers leads, taking the opening game of a four game series 6-3 in front of 1,234 at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Wes Wilson put the Brewers on the board in the top of the 1st with an RBI triple, and Ronnie Gideon plated him one batter later to put the Brewers up 2-0 after one.

Orem came back to tie it at 2-2 in the 2nd, scoring on the first of two Nick Flair home runs and a two-out double from Sam McDonnell.

Helena reclaimed the lead in the top of the third on a Gideon sacrifice fly, but that would be the last lead the Brewers held all night. Flair led off the fourth with a 455-foot home run to left-center to tie the game 3-3, and the Owlz would collect a pair in the bottom of the 5th.

Michael Petersen (1-3) came out to start the 5th, aiming to work more than four innings for the first time all season, but he was greeted by a Juan Moreno leadoff home run that put Orem ahead for good at 4-3.

Cam Roegner came on in relief of Peterson and allowed an unearned run in the 5th and another run in the 8th. He did not strikeout a batter and walked three. Petersen struck out just one in his four innings of work.

Wilson was the only Brewer to finish the game with more than one hit, while Gideon picked up two RBIs and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Helena will look to stop a three game skid on Friday night with Scott Serigstad on the hill opposite Brandon Glazer. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 (8:05 Central).

Final: Arizona Reds 3, Arizona Brewers 2

Only 92 degrees! Sweater weather!

Maryvale Box Score

Brewer pitchers did not allow an earned run in this game, so the loss hurts in that regard.

FIELDING

E: York 2 (8, fielding, fielding); Thomas (3, fielding).

Maryvale Game Log

Offensively, all eight hits were singles, only one walk was drawn, and Brewers batters went down via strikeout 16 times.

This was the 7th game in a row CF Jose Gomez had exactly two hits.

Couple things I wanted to mention on the Shuckers game last night.

Lopez

Overall was pretty good, when he missed in the first two innings he missed the zone pretty bad which is why he walked two batters. He gave up 4 earned runs but it really doesn't paint the whole picture. One earned run came because Tyrone Taylor misjudged a fly ball bad. He came in first and then back tracked but it was way too late and that lead to a triple. That runner scored on a wild pitch that really would have been tough for a lot of catchers to make in my opinion. Having said that another runner scored on a wild pitch later in the game that Nottingham definitely should have had. Jorge really only gave up two hard hits. One was an absolute no doubter and the other was a single. I just wanted to give everybody an accurate picture since you read a box score and think 7 hits 4 er....oh that's not good.

Phillips

Two seeing eye singles to the right of second base, for some reason second basemen played in the hole on the right side and the left side was still occupied by the short stop and third baseman. I know I sound like I am being nit picky but at this point we will take anything the Shuckers hitters do.

Taylor

Wall scraping home run, in the same at bat barely pulled one foul by about 10 feet left of the foul pole. Good to see.

Nottingham

He was pretty lost yesterday. He liked to swing out of his shoes multiple times, hopefully can get it together in August. You can tell hes frustrated. At least he gets practice with balls in the dirt because of Jorge's nasty curveball, because he needs it.

Well looks like it's for me to get the way too early "Free Brinson" train rolling! He's in beast mode in these 3 games! But the again it's still just three games ha
