Final: Colorado Springs 9, Oklahoma City 8 (10 innings)

Garcia Gives Sky Sox 9-8 Walk Off Win

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

The Sky Sox scored three runs in the 9th inning to come from behind and tie the Oklahoma City Dodgers, then score the winning run on a Rene Garcia single in the 10th. The Dodgers didn’t help their cause by committing five errors. The Sky Sox knocked out 12 hits, including three hits from Rene Garcia (including the game winner), plus two each from Kyle Wren, Nate Orf (who also homered), Michael Reed and Yadiel Rivera.

The Sky Sox won in the 10th after Michael Reed walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to 2nd on Rivera’s sac bunt, then scored on Garcia’s single to center.

Wily Peralta was cruising until the 6th inning, then he served up a three-run HR to Corey Brown (Brown would hit two HRs on the day). Peralta’s final numbers were uninspiring, going 5 2/3 innings giving up four runs, eight hits and pair of walks while striking out four. Brewer pitchers gave up 14 hits to go with four walks.

Damien Magnifico picked up his sixth win after pitching a scoreless 10th inning.

Javier Betancourt went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Sunday. He's hit in 12 of his last 13 games. (Jason Clark)

Biloxi Boxscore

Angel Ventura only gave up 2 hits, but they were both HRs, the walks and homers doomed him. Brooks Hall also gave up a HR so all of Jacksonville's runs were scored via the HR.

Dustin DeMuth exploded in his 5th game going 4-5 with a 2B, he bumped his AVE to .333 in Biloxi and instantly became the owner of the team's highest BA this side of Woodruff. Javier Betancourt is hitting .393 over his last 10 games.

Peoria Knocks Rattlers 5-2

Chiefs break 2-2 tie with three runs in seventh inning

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

Jordan Yamamoto has struggled here of late, actually it's been ever since he started gaining some traction with the fans. Much like Angel Ventura in AA, Jordan gave up all 5 runs via 2 long balls.

David Denson (3-4,2B) had the only multi hit effort in this game for the T-Rats,

Final: Brevard County 7, Charlotte 6

Pena homer leads Manatees to improbable victory

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

***

Brevard County Box Score

A little strange to see Cody Ponce record only 1 strike out over 5.0 innings, the fewest he has had in a start of more than 3 innings this year. Ponce gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and 1 walk. Charlotte once again wasn't afraid to run on the Manatees. They swiped 3 bases with Ponce on the mound and a 4th after he left the game.

All 4 hits for the Manatees were produced by the first two hitters in the lineup, leadoff hitter Corey Ray (1-for-4) and the offensive story of game, Fidel Pena (3-for-4, 2B, HR). As mentioned in the game story Pena didn't have quite the success behind the plate that he did swinging the bat.

Brevard County Game Log

Down 6-2, the Manatees use miscues and one big blast to put 5 runs on the board to take the lead in the 7th inning.

Brevard County Bottom of the 7th

  • Jose Cuas hit by pitch.
Wendell Rijo reaches on a force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Andrew Velazquez. Jose Cuas to 2nd.
Blake Allemand reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Andrew Velazquez. Jose Cuas scores. Wendell Rijo to 2nd.
Malik Collymore reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by shortstop Andrew Velazquez. Wendell Rijo to 3rd. Blake Allemand to 2nd.
Pitching Change: Ian Gibaut replaces Jeff Howell.
Corey Ray grounds out, shortstop Andrew Velazquez to first baseman Alec Sole. Wendell Rijo scores. Blake Allemand to 3rd. Malik Collymore to 2nd.
Fidel Pena homers (3) on a fly ball to right field. Blake Allemand scores. Malik Collymore scores.
George Iskenderian flies out to right fielder Grant Kay.
    Clint Coulter strikes out swinging.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: Arizona Diamondbacks 5, Arizona Brewers 3, 12 innings

Weather: 100 degrees, partly cloudy.

Wind: 12 mph, Out to CF.

Maryvale Box Score

A-Crew falls to 2-3 in the second half; D-Backs scored an unearned run in the 8th to get within a run, then scored once in the 9th against RHP Jack Finnegan, who was still in the game in the 12th when the two fall-behind runs pushed across. Second year LHP Christian Trent set down all nine men he faced, we're still unaware specifically what injury he's coming back from. Just-turned 18-year-old RHP Michael Gonzalez allowed a solo home run in his three-inning start, and little else.

Maryvale Game Log

Four Brewers in the middle of the lineup had multi-hit games; all but one of the Maryvale hits were singles. RF Nick Cain has been searching for a big offensive day, and he netted the double as part of a 3-for-5 effort that included a base on balls.

Final: Missoula 13, Helena 8

The only game story is purely from a Missoula perspective, and a day after allowing an Osprey record 26 hits in a game, maybe that's best for a Helena pitching effort that results in 13 runs allowed (ten earned) on 17 hits.

Helena Box Score

Starting RHP Nattino Diplan was dented for 10 runs (eight earned) in three plus innings, as LHP Shawn Clowers allowed all three of Diplan's runners to score in a wild six-run 4th. RHP Aaron Myers remains a bright spot with his 0.00 ERA after 6.2 Helena innings of relief.

Helena Game Log

Eight runs, so yes, some things to see. Days off for Orimoloye and Lara...

Man, has Phillips been a disappointment this season, especially repeating a level.

He had an .800+ OPS a little over a month ago. The scouting reports have been fine. I'm not worried.

Man, has Phillips been a disappointment this season, especially repeating a level.

He had an .800+ OPS a little over a month ago. The scouting reports have been fine. I'm not worried.

Most of those positive scouting reports were from people who were basing their analysis on his improved power stroke and walk rate while ignoring the rest. There's really no excusing away his season to this point. While it's true he floated around an .800 OPS most of May and June the "+" was like .805-.817, which is much different than floating from say .820-.850. He's been down .100 OPS most of the season and he's heading in wrong the direction.

A .223/.323/.401 line with a .724 OPS isn't what anyone was expecting from him, in fact we're approaching a .200 reduction in OPS from his previous 2 seasons which should give anyone a pause, if we had been polled prior to the season most us would have called that a disaster. He hasn't hit this bad since his first 2 years in pro ball, hopefully he figures out a way to combine what he did in the previous 2 seasons with his improved walk and HR rates this year and meet in the middle some place for 2017.

I don't think it's fair to say he's fine because he's still talented and has improved power and "patience", when he's not been more patient just because his walk is improved as his contact rate is declining and his strike out rate is spiking. There's no evidence of improved "selectivity" at the plate, just a hitter who's a bit lost and struggling to find any footing. At least with Phillips he'll always provide excellent defense.

MH posted the mid-season updates from Sickels who wrote the most even handed report at this moment:

Hitting .225/.320/.410 in Double-A with 12 homers, 43 walks, 119 strikeouts in 324 at-bats; has been in a deep slump since late June, dragging his numbers down; contact is the obvious issue but (as with Lopez) his long-term projection is still positive, if more clouded than six months ago.

Yes Sickles was darker than my outlook if only slightly. Otherwise pretty much what I said.
