Brewers Start 2nd Half with Win

Five Run 4th the Key

By Craig Durham / Helena Brewers

HELENA, MT - A Nathan Rodriguez three-run blast in the top of the 4th snapped a 4-4 tie and sent the Helena Brewers on their way to an 8-4 victory over the Missoula Osprey on Friday night in Missoula.

The home run was the third of the game for Helena, and capped a five-run inning that turned a 4-2 deficit into a comfortable lead.

Ryan Aguilar paced the offense with four hits, including a leadoff home run to begin the ballgame, and all nine starters finished the game with at least one hit for the Brewers. Joantgel Segoiva, Ronnie Gideon, Franly Mallen and Trever Morrison all finished the game with two hits, and Rodriguez led the way with his three RBI.

Matt Smith survived some shaky defense and three runs in the first, pitching into the 5th inning, coming up just one out shy of his first victory of the season. The right-hander from Georgetown struck out three and allowed just three baserunners over his last 3.2 innings of work.

Wuilder Rodriguez (3-1) earned the victory in his second outing of the week after his start got cut short by rain last Tuesday night. Rodriguez absolutely baffled the Osprey offense, not allowing a hit until Bryan Araiza reached on an infield single with two outs in the 9th. Rodriguez struck out three and walked just one.

The Brewers will look to make it back-to-back wins to start the series when they send Gentry Fortuno to the hill on Saturday night opposite Pierce Romero for the Osprey.

Helena Box Score

Sometimes hacking works! Sixteen base knocks, no free passes for Brewer bats. Also ten K's, but everyone in the lineup touched the hit column, with Ryan Aguilar, as noted above, leading the way.

LF Demi Orimoloye and SS Gilbert Lara were each 1-for-5 (singles). Always interesting how first-year college bats including the late-round draft picks are able to excel in the Pioneer League (to the point, we've learned over the years, to almost ignore the big crooked numbers), yet so many second-year high school or second-year stateside Latin kids don't find the same success.

Helena Game Log

Animal Planet fans, RHP Wuilder Rodriguez'nickname just has to be "beast" right? Think about it...

Nice work here by Rodriguez in tandem with starter RHP Matt Smith, who was solid enough.
