2016 Mid-Season Community Top 25 Prospect Poll - Voting in now closed

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

We would like to invite everyone to participate in the 2016 Mid-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting.

Please take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Voting will conclude on August 8. You can change your votes at anytime through the 8th, so I recommend getting your picks in early. You can always go back and tweak your list.

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on Monday, August 8. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion (such as which Diaz you are selecting).

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included.

3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25 - adding a few more is totally fine. That way if someone in your top 25 is traded or released, or if you mistakenly miss a number, I can just bump up your next player(s) into the Top 25.

4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a few days after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

Eligibility questions:

Rookie eligibility is determined by 50 IP or 130+ ABs at the major league level.

I think what speaks volumes is the guys who didn't make my top 25:

-Anyone drafted after the 2nd round in 2016 (Burnes, Webb, McClanahan) plus M. Feleciano (we have two Felicianos BTW), Supak, Neuhaus, Coulter, Tyrone Taylor, Angel Ventura, Orimoloye, plus other guys who are having a surprisingly good season (Harber, Burkhalter, Yamamoto, Ghelfi), Jacob Barnes, Kyle Wren, Michael Reed, Brent Suter

The first five out:

30) Chad McLanahan

29) Taylor Williams

28) Jon Perrin

27) Damien Magnifico

26) Yhonathan Barrios

The 25:

25) Monte Harrison

24) Jake Gatewood

23) Adrian Houser

22) Devin Williams

21) Nathan Kirby

20) Jacob Nottingham

19) Gilbert Lara

18) Miguel Diaz

17) Wei-Chung Wang

16) Jorge Lopez

15) Kodi Medeiros

14) Cody Ponce

13) Lucas Erceg

12) Freddy Peralta

11) Marcos Diplan

10) Brett Phillips

9) Trent Clark

8) Corey Ray

7) Lewis Brinson

6) Luis Ortiz

5) Phil Bickford

4) Brandon Woodruff

3) Isan Diaz

2) Orlando Arcia

1) Josh Hader

Not going to go into detail, but I wanted to highlight a few guys who are having surprisingly good years who did not even make the top 30, specifically David Burkhalter (1.096 WHIP, stats really hurt by his last two starts when he was probably pitching hurt), Jordan Yamamoto (9.5 K/9, leads T-Rats in innings), Conor Harber (12.1 K/9, but he hasn't pitched since 7/3, didn't know he was hurt). Just a few years ago it would have been likely that all of them would have been on the list.

1. LHP Brent Suter – One cannot look at the numbers over the last two seasons and deny that Suter is a legit pitching prospect. Few walks, few gopher balls, a 5:1 K/BB ratio.

2. LHP Josh Hader – Superb numbers at Biloxi, but treated like a baby seal in Colorado Springs. I’ll give him a mulligan and put him right behind Suter.

3. 2B Isan Diaz – Dynamite bat in the middle infield. Could he be what Brewers fans hoped to get from Rickie Weeks?

4. 3B Lucas Erceg – Showing superb hitting, but OBP skills are a little weak.

5. RHP Phil Bickford – Acquisition from Will Smith trade looks like a right-handed Josh Hader

6. RHP Jon Perrin – Let’s just hope that Harvard Law School keeps passing on him. Besides, pitching is more honest work.

7. OF Lewis Brinson – 5-tool CF. Outfield’s getting kinda crowded, is it not?

8. LHP Wei-Chung Wang – After a lost season as a Rule V pick, Wang’s established himself as a very good pitching prospect.

9. RHP Luis Ortiz – Will be interesting to see how he does with the Crew, but two plus pitches look promising.

10. 1B/OF Garrett Cooper – He hits for decent average, lots of doubles, and now shows flexibility in the field.

11. OF Trent Clark – OBP skills and speed are his major selling points. Can his average climb up there?

12. RHP Brandon Woodruff – Has exploded on the scene in Biloxi and Brevard County.

13. OF Corey Ray – Potential five-tool player, but Brevard County is NOT a good place to start a career.

14. SS Orlando Arcia – The glove is there, but offensive performance at Colorado Springs raises questions.

15. RHP Marcos Diplan – Have to love a 2.21 ERA, and almost 11 K per 9 innings.

16. RHP Freddy Peralta – Slightly higher ERA and SO9 than Diplan.

17. RHP Jorge Ortega – Still keeping walks low, but giving up too many gopher balls.

18. C Jacob Nottingham – On the one hand, he clearly regressed from 2015. On the other hand, he’s only 21.

19. OF Michael Reed – OBP Skills and speed are clearly there, but docked for the same reason Arcia’s down to #14.

20. OF Troy Stokes – OBP skills and doubles power look very intriguing.

21. C Mitch Ghelfi – Clearly hitting for average at Brevard County/

22. OF Demi Orimoloye – OBP skills improved, but other numbers are down.

23. OF Brent “Maverick” Phillips – OBP skills are there, power is there, defense looks good, but drop to a .225 average raises questions.

24. 2B/3B Nate Orf – OBP skills and versatility makes for a valuable bench asset at the very least.

25. 3B/SS/1B Jake Gatewood – The power’s there… but some OBP skills would be nice.

26. SS Gilbert Lara – Struggles at the plate raise more questions… and I’m not sure I like the answers.

27. 2B Trey York – OBP skills and high-average bat look promising.

28. RHP Cody Ponce – Peripherals look good, but only four innings a start is not good.

29. C Mario Feliciano – Hitting for average, but would like more OBP skills

30. RHP Devin Williams – A step behind Diplan and Peralta.

31. RHP Damien Magnifico – Best closer prospect in the system.

32. OF Monte Harrison – He just looks overmatched, based on the stats.

33. RHP Jorge Lopez – Became a baby seal at Colorado Springs.

I know this isn't a debate thread but yikes. The differing of opinions though is what makes it fun! Few years ago it'd be difficult to find 8-10 promising ones.

Look at what Suter has done in Colorado Springs. Then look at how Hader and Lopez have fared.

Those numbers are saying something. It is one thing to have a dominating year pitching at Brevard County. Suter's numbers would be ho-hum. But those numbers pitching half the time in one of the most notorious hitters parks in professional baseball is worth noting.

Combined with Suter's 2015, and I think the Brewers have a real prospect on their hands.

Very nice situation when you feel like the next 5 are all legit prospects.

It's pretty crazy when you start to look at some of the names that didn't make the cut for a top 25 prospect list: Kirby, Coulter, Derby, Magnifico, T. Williams, Rijo, Reed, Houser, N. Walters, C. Herrera, Ventura, Supak, Roache, Cooper, Demuth, Wilkerson, Mallen, Yamamoto, Leal, Perrin, Johnny Davis, Wang, Archer, Segovia, P. Henry, McClanahan, Sibrian,

Before we get too deep into this, since MLB.com has a top 30 for each team and we tend to reference that list when discussing prospects, and since we have an influx of prospects with the trade, would it make sense for us to expand from top 25 to top 30?

Also, I seem to recall that once a player hit 27 he was no longer eligible for the old Power 50. Do we want to keep that rule (would affect Marinez)?

I never had an age limit for this list, so I won't start this time. I think it can be considered in the future, but for now, let's not worry about any such thing.

As for expanding the Top 25, not at this time. We have started this one, and for several reasons, we will stick with 25. I've said several times before that expanding the number of guys is easy for some people, but if it's too big of a list, more casual voters might shy away (and have said so). My goal is participation. Also, the bigger the list, the more work it is on my part.

We can talk about expanding in the future, but for this one, it's 25.

Thanks.
