Three way deal with Royals and ?

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/ian-kennedy-wade-davis-trade-package-royals.html

So apparently, the Royals want to dump Ian Kennedy on whoever wants Wade Davis. Royals are asking for Chapman type return for Davis by himself but would lower the prospect price if the team takes Kennedy. Not sure if MA would ever sign off on this, but do you think it might work to get creative and get in as third team in a trade like this and take Kennedy and prospects from the Royals and whoever is getting Davis? Kennedy is owed a lot of cash and this would be a Garza type deal. I'm not sure what the chance of him rebounding might be over the next couple years to flip him either. If MA signs off on it, it might be a way to squeeze some more prospects out without giving up anything besides cash. If Kennedy has a decent year next year or the year after we flip him for more prospects.

We already have one pitcher we have to pay regardless of how much of a loser he is. I'd rather not have two.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I didn't realize that that contract goes through 2020, yikes. That would have to be a Lucas Giolito type prospect coming back to take on that albatross.

Depends on what comes back and what else the Brewers do. Assuming they move Lucroy some time between now and the start of next season, if they trade Braun they will have virtually nothing for committed payroll. They could easily assume Kennedy's contract. He hasn't been terrible - the HRs are a concern but his strikeout numbers are still good (9.2/9) and doesn't walk many (3.0 K/BB), plus fewer than one hit per inning.

That being said, the prospects would need to be good and Garza would need to go in the deal to at least offset next season. If the Brewers get one top 150 prospect for every year/$12-14M of the contract (seems to be market rate for Hill/Arroyo deals), I'd take three of them to assume Kennedy's contract.

Fangraphs did a nice job of calculating out Kennedy's negative value at 36 million or ~#50 prospect.

The additional complication would be that Kennedy is still expected to produce about 3 wins of value that would mean nothing to the Brewers so we'd likely be wise to move him immediately after taking on his contract. I think his HR/9 will stabilize below 2 and his k-BB of >15% I think would entice someone desperate for pitching. Its not my money so I'm on board.

Brewers get:

top 50ish prospect

Kennedy

Team desperate for RP get:

Wade Davis

Royals get:

prospect

Brewers get:

organizational top 10 prospect

Team desperate for starter get:

Ian Kennedy and $45 million
