QUITE THE CHANGEUP

Brewers ace Desguin started career as shortstop

Ryan Collingwood, Helena Independent Record

A junior college coach posed a question to Jordan Desguin, a query that would have never hit the bearded Californian's ears if he opted to stay at Florida State University.

Learning to adapt

Former La Porte High School star DeMuth shines, moves up to Double A for Brewers

By Zack Eldridge, Michigan City News Dispatch Staff Writer

For the first few months of the season, Dustin DeMuth struggled to get into a rhythm.

Now he seems to be flourishing.

Last year, DeMuth played for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the lower A level team of the Milwaukee Brewers. Then, at the beginning of this season, he got moved up to Brevard County (Fla.), a higher A level team. Then, on Tuesday, DeMuth got called up to the Double A Biloxi (Miss.) Shuckers.

The former La Porte High School standout has thrived since his early scuffles with Brevard County, the Advanced A affiliate of the Brewers.

“It’s went pretty well,” DeMuth said. “The first half of the season was kind of an adjustment period, just getting used to the pitching and the speed of play, and stuff like that. So I kind of got through that. That was a little bit of a rough one. But now, into June and July, I’m feeling a lot more comfortable at the plate, just sort of seeing the ball a lot better. And starting to play better as a result.”

DeMuth, who was drafted by the Brewers in the fifth round of the 2014 draft, paced Brevard County with a .287 batting average. The left-handed hitter had 105 hits in 96 games this season. He had a team-leading 43 RBIs and six home runs. His on-base percentage was .358 and his slugging percentage was a team-best .404. In his last 10 games, DeMuth is hitting .361 with four multi-hit games.

DeMuth said the key to his development this campaign has been staying within himself.

“I’m really trying to not do too much, just do my job,” DeMuth said. “And just continue to be as consistent as possible. Just trying to keep the same approach at the plate for every at-bat. I’m not trying to chase pitches out of my zone, or chase pitches that I don’t want to hit. Just trying to look for the right pitch and just drive it somewhere.”

At times, DeMuth was clutch for the Manatees.

He ripped a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 16th inning, leading Brevard County to a 4-3 win over Jupiter on July 13.

“It was great,” he said. “The games can get kind of long, and with it being extra innings, it could have gone on for a while. So it was great to end the game and get a win for the team.”

DeMuth went 3-for-6 in that contest with the homer and two RBIs.

Most of his pro career so far, DeMuth has been a third baseman. However, with Brevard County, he played first base.

DeMuth said the transition was a little tough at the beginning, but once he got used to it, playing first base came pretty naturally. He also added playing another position is another option for the Brewers and should only benefit him in the future.

DeMuth said recently it’d be special if he could possibly move up a level later this season.

“That’d be great, that’s the goal,” he said before he got called up to Double A Biloxi. “Always coming into the season, you want to finish a little higher than what you started at. That’s definitely the goal and that would be awesome.”

Final: Nashville 2, Colorado Springs 0

Sky Sox Shutout 2-0 In Nashville

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Colorado Springs Box Score

Colorado Springs managed just seven hits and one walk in getting shutout by the Nashville Sounds in a pitchers duel. Kyle Wren led the way with two hits and a walk. Recently acquired Aaron Wilkerson had a solid outing on the mound, giving up only two runs and on only three hits (no walks) over six innings. Wilkerson retired nine batters in a row at one point.

The lose snapped a five game winning streak for the Sky Sox.

Colorado Springs Game Log

The Sky Sox simply could not get guys in when they had the chance, including Brandon Macias getting thrown out at the plate in the 3rd inning.

I want to heartily thank reillymcshane for stepping in and offering to handle Colorado Springs duties for the remainder of the season, as of today.

Please do not underestimate what my now four fellow Link Reporters do for us all season long, and they all know how to communicate with me and amongst themselves when asking for a day off, which is rare (please don't be afraid to do so).

Much appreciated and thanks so much!

Love the indy-ball-back-to-affiliated ball stories for former Milwaukee farmhands --

RED SOX PICK UP RAILCATS INF JOSE SERMO

Baseball Reference

That was from June 20th.

Look at the night he had Tuesday, wow. Good for him.

Saw him play earlier this year against Wichita, he looked pretty good in that outing and so did former brewer hand Seth Harvey.

Jungmann's eight strong not enough in walk-off loss

Shuckers game two, 2-1, as series shifts to Biloxi

Biloxi Shuckers

Taylor Jungmann tossed seven innings of no-hit baseball after giving up a run in the first. (Mark P Driscoll)

Biloxi Boxscore

Taylor Jungmann with his best all around outing in some time, going 8 full innings on 99 pitches while throwing 60% for strikes, he even collected a hit. I doubt very much if he's ever going to be a high strike percentage guy given his mechanics and stuff, but he can be fairly successful throwing strikes around 60%. Is it just me or is that weird picture? If you didn't know he was throwing a pitch what would that expression say to you?

Well the Shuckers collected 8 hits and only went down in order in the 5th and 7th, but couldn't string enough hits together to win. Bunting to win in the 9th didn't exactly work out either... Johnny Davis (3-4,2B) had a nice multi hit game, all of his hits actually left the IF which is pretty rare when he collects more than 1 hit in a game, usually at least one of the hits will be of the infield variety. I find myself often wondering if his walk up music is "Straight Outta Compton" which I thought was epic when he was in WI, especially since there are only a couple of SFW 15 second bits in the whole song. As a baseball player he's basically a more likable Juan Pierre if he makes it to MLB, and what a great story that would be. If you aren't familiar with Davis' story, search the forum for the various features that came out when he was in WI, it's worth the read. I don't normally have a soft spot for players with his skill set, but he's so easy to root for one can't help but pull hard for him.

Clinton Clubs Wisconsin 8-3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

The pitching from Jake Drossner and Miguel Diaz was less than spectacular here, the longer Drossner stays in a game the worse it tends to get given his FB command, his error didn't help his cause either.

The only noteworthy hitting performance came from the bat of Max McDowell (3-4,2B,HR), normally I wouldn't talk about RBIs but Max also drove in all 3 Rattler runs. In fact he had a pretty busy game as he was part of 2 CS but also committed 2 PBs to up his total to 12.

Final: Tampa 2, Brevard County 0

Acevedo goes six scoreless in win over Manatees

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

***

Brevard County Box Score

As always with the home games Donald's game story includes quotes from Manatees manager Joe Ayrault.

Among those quotes, Ayrault points out that the lack of a clutch hit (0-for-8 with runners in scoring position) as a difference maker for the Manatees.

Also described in the game story, a slick running catch by Corey Ray saved a run. Speaking of Ray, he singled three times (3-for-4) and stole a base. Also with three hits and a stolen base was 3B George Iskenderian (3-for-4).

Starter Freddy Peralta went 5.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 6 and walking 1. Jon Perrin also put together a solid effort allowing 3 hits and 0 runs with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts over 4.0 innings.

Brevard County Game Log

Brevard County was held scoreless for the 16th time this season despite their 8 hits. They are now just 2-9 against the Tampa Yankees this season.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
