Final: Idaho Falls 7, Helena 6

Idaho Falls Chukars edge Helena Brewers 7-6 at Kindrick Legion Field

Helena Independent Record

Two photos at the link

Following an embarrassing 9-2 defeat Saturday night in which the Chukars didn't commit a single error, the Brewers again fell to Idaho Falls -- but by a much closer margin -- 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Legion Field in Helena.

The Chukars went up on the Brewers early in the matchup, with Rudy Martin scoring on Yeison Melo's grounder in the first inning and Jordan Ebert scoring in the second on a soft fly.

But the momentum appeared to shift in the fourth inning, with the Helena club scoring four runs to the Chukars' one. The Brewers' Wes Wilson scored on a line drive to right field by Nathan Rodriguez, and was quickly followed by Demi Orimoloye stealing home after the next at-bat as part of a double steal. Rodriguez crossed the plate on Trever Morrison's line drive, and Caleb Whalen followed on an RBI soon after.

The home team's advantage was short-lived, however, as the Chukars outscored them 4-1 in the fifth inning. Meibrys Viloria and David Edwards both homered for Idaho Falls, with the Brewers only run of the inning was tallied by Rodriguez on Jonathan Oquendo's sacrifice fly.

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when Morrison brought in Oquendo on a grounder to right field to tie up the game 6-6.

Idaho Falls scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth, and the Brewers were unable to answer.

Tough-luck loss for RHP Matt Smith as starting RHP Karsen Lindell had a much-tougher day...

Two doubles for RF Yerald Martinez; 20-year-old 21st round catcher Nathan Rodriguez was on base four times and sports an .857 OPS. The Brewers went catcher-heavy in the recent draft and the early offensive returns are very promising...
